Just got to Ganon in Zelda without getting the sword!

  • Ok, and that's what I postulated in my first post but that was met with confusion, haha. I'll have to try this one of these days.

You go to Ganon without sword, task accomplished. Without sword, Link get defeated by Ganon, so game over. Now you continue, and take the woodden sword in first screen. Go to Ganon again, defeat it and so you finish the first quest. Start the seconds quest. Repeat.

Also, I was thinking, the wand can hit whatever the sword can hit. Not the beam, not the fire, the wand stick itself can. I would think 99% it cannot hit Ganon; however, can anyone confirm that he made such test (try to hit Ganon with the wand stick) and it did not work? Thanks.

    Edit: added a question.

100% the wand CANNOT hit Ganon.  (It also does not damage Wizrobes)

Only the swords can hit him to makehim vulnerable to the silver arrow.

    Ok, great, thanks.

Next question: I was thinking, to have a zero continue game. Go to Ganon without sword, press START, then UP+A, the "Continue/Save/Retry" menu appears. Select save. Then you restart from the initial screen with 0 conutinues, get the wodden sword, defeat Ganon with 0 continues. Would this work?

Not sure, but I imagine not as much.  I expect it to be much harder.

Second quest is much tougher swordless for a few reasons.

The Gleeok distribution is considerably tougher, for instance.

Lots of other scenarios where the stronger second quest enemies make life without a sword a general pain, as well.

(and it requires you to complete rethink the item order, obviously)

Swordless second quest sounds like a nightmare. I've only ever completed it maybe three times; I can't imagine trying it without the sword. I might have to give this a try to really test my LoZ mettle - see if it's really my favorite NES game

The first quest wasn't so bad and didn't take me too long. I expect the second to be more of a challenge and look forward to it.

Keep us posted. I'd love to see your progress!

    Yes, that would work.

Personally, when I did it, the attempt was to no-death the rest of the game, and I just let myself get killed by Ganon the first time, then went back with the "wooden" sword and finished him off.

As an aside, I think it's funny that we've always called it the wooden sword. (since it's brown, obviously  )

But the manual simply calls it the "sword" (as opposed to the "white" sword or the "magical" sword).

And in any of the concept art or manual sketches, it is pretty clearly a BRONZE sword, IMO.

I just got to Gannon and considered it done.  I never got the wooden sword to kill him.

I named a character Zelda to start the second quest on a different save file.

So, first steps: upper right corner, 100 rupies, buy a candle?

Then use bomb/candle to get more from others secret to everybody guys and buy blue ring / magic shield?

Maybe make other rupies in dungeon 2 with snakes, or in the screens east from initial screen.

And once you get candle / blue ring / magic shield you start facing bosses?

Or there is a better startegy? Without a candle, there is no way to make progress I guess, and without these 100 rupies, I see no ways to buy a candle.

Candle is definitely the first major acquisition in the First Quest, since you can't get access to any other weaponized-item without it. (and yes, you either need the hidden 100 rupies to do it, or you need a few of the armos-knight based hidden rupees)

Next major acquisition are bombs, and a couple of heart containers.

You need too much money for the blue ring to be practical that early, IMO, and you need to spend the money to get arrows.

Personally, I'd make a run on Level 1, since:

    a) the boss is a 1-hit-kill with a bomb. (to get the heart container)

    b) you get the bow

    c) you get the boomerang (makes bat rooms a breeze, and you really NEED the stunning ability to make combat practical by stacking up enemies)

Then Level 2 obviously gives you the big upgrade of the Magic Boomerang.

Once you have the bow and the boomerang, I'll leave it to you to prioritize:

    a) the red candle (VERY important for combat)

    b) the wand (REQUIRED to kill any Gleeoks, and "normal contact" is the same as the White Sword)

It's a cool puzzle to figure out the order of things, so I don't want to give too much more away.

Cool. Some day, maybe I could attempt this. Thanks!

Will do.  Probable won't try for a week or so.  I don't find a lot of time to play much and I just picked up a copy of Eartbound so going to run through that first.

Ok, I attempted a safer opening, in 5 quick sessions (see house rules: I don't have time for long sessions, sorry); the optimization Heart Containers wise could be a bit better maybe (I didn't buy any bomb, and waited for the blue ring to risk to get some bombs drops from some blue moblins, yeah, I was playing very safely); however, if anyone is interested to read about it and/or share an opinion, see the .pdf attachment. Next task would of course be to start facing dungeons I guess.

    Cheers!

  • Here's something for ya; is it harder to beat LoZ with only the wooden sword or without the red/blue ring (that is, lowest possible offense versus lowest possible defense). I say wooden sword because it's not possible to beat the game (well not possible to beat Ganon anyway) without it.

    I'm not sure to understand.

Already defeated the game without getting rings, decades ago, if this is what you are suggesting.

Never tought about a swordless game before reading this thread, and wondered about a possible strategy.

Nathan proposed the strategy he uses, I proposed an alternative (more defensive) one.

I you are suggesting to talk strategies to do a swordless and ringless game instead, we can do that.

But probably I misunderstood teh meaning of your post.

I'd say it's a lot more challenging without the sword.

Not getting the rings makes the game very difficult - with or without the sword!

    Someone should do a no-death, no-sword, no-rings run

    If:

    1. few others join a not agonistic challenge (i.e. we share strategies and results trying all to reach the goal); and

    2. it is allowed to use start -> up + A in the two fairy screens, to be able to play quick short sessions; and

    3. a time span of 60 - 120 days is allowed to finish up;

then I'm up for it. This could be a very (tough but) fun challenge!

If we can agree on a consensus for stuff like the above, I'd be interested in giving it a shot as well. We'd definitely need our own thread to catalog progree/tips/proofs etc.
