  • Metal Marines.  Man the last quarter of the game was pretty tough.  You pretty much need to rely on finding the gaps in their defenses with your Marines and then taking out their infrastructure asap

  • Because it confounded me as a kid, and several people here swear it is cake, I'm going to start Mechwarrior tonight
  • I did a no death run on Wolfchild last week on a live stream. It's not uploaded to youtube yet but when it is it will be on this page if verification is needed.

  • Thanks. I tried that a bit this year but didn't stick with it
  • Well I was cruising through Mechwarrior easily enough, until suddenly my mech just overheats right away every mission now. Like, I'm helpless 10 seconds in every time. Anyone have any idea how that mechanic is supposed to work? I've maxed out heatsinks, tried to drop weight, moved up to a bigger mech, nothing has helped

(figured it out, each mech basically has a preset amount of encumbrance allowed, which sucks since its really limits any real customization you can do)
  • Paladin's Quest is done.
  • Thoughts? Its one of the few RPGs I still don't have.

Plan on tackling anything else next?
  • I have thoughts, but I'm kind of mentally exhausted from it at the moment. At that point where I just wanted to be done. I generally choose what I'm going to play next based on wanting to study some aspect of a game, so that probably means Lufia 2, which was already beaten this year. I've been trying to play one new game for every replay too, but most of the new ones like PQ have been kind of duds. Uncharted Waters is tempting though...

I would have plenty to add if we were keeping track of translated SFC games  .
  • Man, I've really hit the wall again with Mechwarrior.  I cannot complete any missions because the enemies soak up so much damage that I will always run out of ammo before destroying them all.  And I have the heaviest mech loaded down with maximum missiles!  300 missiles!

I've watched a longplay, and somehow, some way, stuff is dying much faster, much further into the game.  There's no difficulty select, or cheats to increase damage, so I don't know what the hell is going on.  This game is maddening

edit:  Yeah, I don't know what has happened but I've made the game unwinnable.  Maybe doing side missions gradually makes your enemies stronger because its based on total missions played because I'm only on required mission 12 of 50 and it is LITERALLY IMPOSSIBLE.  The video longplay has enemies dying with 25%-50% of the firepower I'm punching into these guys.

    From the FAQ:

Strategy : This is when the missions start to get a bit harder. There are 9
enemy mechs in total, so make sure to pack a lot of ammunition.
There is only one base here for you to protect, so quickly destroy
the enemy units before they get the chance to deal damage to the
base. Three missile launchers, preferably the short ranged homing
ones, would be enough to finish the job. You can also add a Particle
Cannon to finish off weak enemy mechs.
I'll rock 6 missiles and run out of ammo with 3-4 enemies left. I can rock 5 missiles and a particle cannon and get to 3-4 enemies and futily try to kill one with the cannon while he wrecks my base. No idea what happened to my game but I'm about ready to crack the board in half
  • Died on the final boss of Super Ninja Boy last night. Since there is no strategy to the boss battles (your level is the only factor) I should get it tonight

Up next I think I'll return to Shadowrun. Or maybe play Ultimate Black Gate. Probably Shadowrun though

I may also try to see if I have the NP that has the Mechwarrior tips. Otherwise I think I'm done with that one.
  • Super Ninja Boy

Are you sure that it ends after 99 races?

The NES version did. I tried this SNES one out, 3/4 hours of consecutive game play, I feel like I did way more than 100 races, I've seen Fandango over 20 times, and Volcano at least 5 or 6 times. My finger hurts. Play on a keyboard is harder.

I continue another bit, but if the goal is survive 99 races, consider this game defeated, I guess.

Here a couple screen shots, I have some more of my game.

Thanks, I'm 99% sure that I play the whole loop at least twice. I lost the count of race, of course, but considering 30 second each race, even adding another 30 second between races, in 3 hours there are 180 minutes.

  • One way or another I'll give it to you.
  • I'll also update the win condition for next year to be be One Loop (64 races). Since that seems to be our best guess right now

Ah ah, cool! Nice to see my nick name on position 28 with 4 points! Great!

    Now, about the strategy guide:

    - Fandango: turn right, turn left, turn right; turn right, turn left, turn right; repeat four times.

    - ...

    More seriously, here a couple:

    1. Differently from the NES version where you must win about once every 3 races to avoid game overs, in this version is it vital to end up 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in each race, but it is completely unrequested to actually win the races. So, between 1st and 3rd the difference is minimal, between 3rd and 4th it is huge. The rule of thumb strategy here is simple: if you are 3rd or 2nd and wasting a couple of nitros (cost 20k) you gain a position (prize +50k), do so; if you need to waste six or more nitros to gain a position (60k or +), then don't, it is better to finish below and save such nitro. Spend all you can to avoid a 4th place.

    2. Try to avoid buying nitro: pick it up when you can. Also, try to pick up money bags if not too much out of your path. I prefer maximize tires and shocks first (cheaper upgrades, and better control over the truck trajectory), then engine and accel-box. In any case, save cash makes little sense, invest it in improvements.

    Cheers!

  • Went on a little Safari this morning.

  • Decided to save Earth while I had my bazooka out.

    Metal Combat Falcon's Revenge complete.

  • Someone send this man X-Zone and Bazooka Blitzkrieg, stat!

Please do, and the shipping time can give my shoulder a rest XD

  • Young Merlin.  Backtracking city, but at least unlike Lord of the Rings and Addams Family Values I don't want to kill myself the entire time.

  • I always wanted to play Young Merlin, maybe I'll shoot for doing it next year.

Its pretty good.  Only a few hours long if you use a guide, which I did, and the hardest part is the mine cart sections.  Not sure what they were thinking with those.  I'd say PC-style adventure game mixed with action RPG

  • Took a break from Street Fighter and after my failed attempt at Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts and beat King of the Monsters instead.

Now back to the regular schedule.

Edit: For the record, I used the generic Godzilla character.
  • Beat Lufia 2 this morning, but alas, it has already been beaten this year. I can't quite bring myself to play Secret of the Stars, yet at least.
  • Nearly done with another green title. Probably have it by Tuesday night.
  • ^Nice! What'd you think of it?
