Mike Tyson's Punch Out Variant

This one's for you NGD.

I was going through a lot of games I bought today and while checking my current carts for condition upgrades, noticed something about two different Mike Tyson's PO's I have.  Both have the NES-PT-USA ID #'s but they had different label colorings and screws.

Okay so the one has:
-regular flat head screws in the back (3)
-dark silver NES-PT-USA on front label
-silver, circular Nintendo seal on front
-darker blue middle rope and mat behind the ref on front label
-20 is the number stamped on back label

Other one has:
-security bit screws in the back (3)
-bright white NES-PT-USA on front label
-gold, oval-shaped Nintendo seal on front
-orange/red middle rope and mat behind the ref on front label
-19 is the number stamped on back label

Don't know if this is old news or not but I thought I'd bring it up for anyone who cares about variants like I do.  Was hoping to sell one of these to make money back on the lot but now I might have to keep it!

Comments

  • I have both of these, the change in color on the rope I think is an artifact of the white-oval-seal late issue, Tyson looked a bit 'ashy' in the original and when they deepened the contrast I think the color on the rope got screwed up a bit.

Additionally there's two more variants, the round black seal version has a label without "Made in Japan" in the corner, and also NGD has confirmed a copy of this game with a famicom adapter inside.

A variant with a white-oval-seal with flatheads will not exist, the dates are wrong, but it's possible a black seal with security screws may exist. If it did, it would have "Made in Japan" on it. I don't pay much attention to screws though so I've probably bought and sold this at least once already.

On a side note, this late famicom adapter really screws with the theory that adapters were only used in the earliest cartridges, especially since MTPO came out in Japan months after it did in the States. It seems they planned to poach poor-selling carts from overseas to fill USA orders as a regular tactic (although in subsequent years they were better able to predict sales numbers from historical data so it was unnecessary, hence the absence of adapters from any later games).

Really?  Cos that's what I think I have.  I could be mixing up the seals or something.

Or maybe someone switched the screws for some reason?  I mean this particular copy of Mike Tyson's Punch Out I've had for a while.  I didn't buy it new, I believe I got it from funcoland in the 90's.

Whatever the case here's some pics of the front label and screws.

    Whoops mis-read.  Nevermind!
  • It doesn't really screw with any theories. It just adds the sequal to them... Nintendo just used them when it was adventageous. They couldn't get enough games together for launch, so they used the converters.

With Mike Tyson, they either had too many jp games made and they needed to some way to move them, or the demand for the US version was too high and they decided to use some of the jp stock. Since the JP one was released second, it probably wasn't even the earliest games that had the converters. I'm sure this would have happended more if there were more games that were exactly the same on both sides of the ocean.
  • I picked up a new Tyson in a lot today and noticed that it was a bit different than my other copy.  I found this thread and thought I'd post pics to add a little to it and revive it.  My camera isn't of the highest quality, but you should be able to see the slight color differences.  Dangevin's info above is incredible by the way.  The guy is a freaking NES historian.  He should seriously have a PhD in NES.

Front and back of Black Logo, Made in Japan, 3 screw (uses security bit tool, not flat head screwdriver)
Note that the back label is without copyright year.  It is stamped with a 21.

Note that the back label has the 1985 copyright.  It is also stamped with a 21.

I have one of those. In fact it's the only Mike Tyson's Punch That I have left.

    Same physical attributes:

-regular flat head screws in the back (3)

-dark silver NES-PT-USA on front label

-silver, circular Nintendo seal of quality on front

-darker blue top rope (it looks like you meant) and mat behind the ref on front label

-08 is the number stamped on back label, on the lefthande side

  • Sorry to resurect this thread, but I just bought a copy of MTP that has a Round Silver seal, and the three flathead screws. Is there anything special about this version?
  • There's also the round seal with a CAN code on the right side.
