Hardest Super Nintendo Games in your opinion?

  • It's not especially tough. At least until the final, final boss that's sortof a New Game+ bonus content thing. Supposedly. I haven't actually been brave enough to try him yet

Easiest exploit, IMO, was the million-credit secret.

Look up how to do it, but involves taking a specific 3 or 4 missions in sequence, and having some specific conversations in the bar along the way.

Is it much tougher than the NES game?

I remember thinking the NES game was tough, as a kid, but when we revisited it for the contests it really wasn't that bad.

I haven't played the nes one but if you played with two controllers and use the second dpad for shooting I'd imagine it's similar. It's been years since I've played the SNES one, but I usually make it past the bald guy shooting lasers from his eyes. but the levels after that I usually die on

That's the first boss, out of 4 or 5

I need to revisit the snes version, since it was a much nicer looking port of the arcade original.

yeah I know it's the first boss  I need to revisit it again too. I was much more impatient back then  still one of my favorite SNES games though!
  • 2 clear choices in my opinion.

Battletoads in Battlemaniacs ( hundereds of hours playing, mostly in my youth but again now and I still have a hard time getting past the speeders... never beaten the game)

Super ghouls n ghosts - took me one month of leaving the game on to beat it and that was normal... Doing on hard I haven't even thought of attempting.
  • Super ghouls n ghosts always gave me the most trouble.
  • Lester the Unlikely

The arcade was way tougher than the NES. I can beat the NES version by myself without much focus as long as I use two controllers. But simply to beat Mutoid Man in the Arcade was a feat, I was overjoyed the day I finally beat the first level in that game. I've never played the SNES but I think it's the same as the arcade.

Lester is more challenging for folks who aren't prepared for the slow, deliberate pace of it and Lester's lumbering controls. It's also a victim of "limited continues syndrome" which prevents most folks from getting practice with the later stages. The only two parts I think are difficult beyond a little practice and memorization are the "cheetah chase" section (where your timing must be perfect to avoid instant death) and the barrels of the docks stage. Everything else in the game is pretty easy once you played it a couple of times.

The cheetah run was a challenge, sure.

Buy once you get used to the controls and pace, the rest of the game is pretty straightforward.

That said, I was into that style of game as a sort of poor man's prince of Persia.
  • I can't even imagine Empire Strikes Back on Jedi difficulty. I poured some serious time into that for the monthly contest on 'Brave' aka normal and it was a bitch to complete. I don't see how the snow speeder level could get any tougher. Every time I beat it I'd have next to no energy left.
  • Mario Paint
  • Besides the games mentioned, Metal Morph and The Lawnmower Man both seem like they'd be hard as hell.

Jim Power is one my lifetime gaming goals to beat. The music is so good that I don't mind to painful difficulty. Stage 3 is the furthest I made it so far.
  • Robocop Vs The Terminator is also hard as heck.

    Mechwarrior

You are probably doing something really wrong, then.

It is a challenging game to win without the bonus-money secret, but that is 5 or 6 missions into the game to unlock.

If you outfit your mech properly, and avoid selecting obvious losing fights, the opening game is pretty forgiving.

I dunno.  Whenever I've tried it I drop down into flurry of immediate attacks in Mission 1 and die within 10 seconds

    There isn't a set "mission 1", I didn't think.

You usually have a fairly large selection of possible missions to choose from.

There are definitely some fights offered that you cannot win with the starting hardware.

And you shouldn't be going into the first fight with a stock mech, anyway.

There are worthwhile upgrades you can afford to do before even your first fight.

Ok, with confidence aquired from yours and lurv's comments I returned to Mechwarrior, ready to erase 20 years of torment.  And yeah, the opening game was easy enough once you figure out what you're doing...

Then March (in-game) rolls around, and now I just get completely. f'ed. in. the. a.  The missions are literally unwinnable.  Like, on a 25 attempt losing streak.  And the game ain't deep enough to say I ain't playing it right.  I'm playing it exactly how one should.

What is going on in my game does not represent what happens in the longplay I watched, or the FAQ I read.  So something went extremely FUBAR somehow, and I don't understand it.  Go any idea which issue of Nintendo Power covered the game?  Because there is very clearly some hidden mechanic for enemy strength that I have inadvertedly set far beyond what it should be.

  • There was a Classified Information NP article that spells out the path to a guaranteed MILLION dollar bonus that lets you buy the mech you need to survive the mid game.

I don't know if it is winnable without that bonus...

I have the best mech by this point.  My theory right now is that I spent too many missions earning the money to buy that mech and that the enemies gradually get tougher with each mission played so I've backed myself into a dead end.  So it would make sense that getting the money all at once which would let you concentrate strictly on story missions could make the game do-able if that is indeed how it works.

I have a decent number of NP issues from around that time so I'll start going through them tonight to see if I can find that tip

Pretty sure the bonus happens only 4 - 6 missions into the game, so you get a big power boost earlier on that lets you take some of the bigger missions earlier for a bigger payout to let you upgrade further, faster.

  • Jurassic Park is a pretty damn hard game, not sure if it's the hardest, but it might be up there. Honestly I think the nes version is superior.

The only thing I found hard about JP is having the dedication to get through it. As for difficulty I never found it too bad, especially since the camera angle can be abused pretty bad by killing dinos before they can see you. Definitely takes a while to get through though. It also has the worst ending for pretty much any game I've ever played.

What a crap game! That's the one with no password, correct? I despised it when I rented it.

Yep, no password system... definitely a game that would have been a shitty rental.
  • My friend had Jurassic Park and it seemed okay for the time, except for the lack of a save/password feature. The 3D sections were kind of cool for a 16-bit game at the time. It probably hasn't aged well at all.

Yeah, it was a fun game to beat with your buddies on a sleep over, since you were looking at an all weekend affair, depending on whether you knew where everything was hidden and how easy a time you had with the bosses...
