The Lion King would be mine. I've never made it past the second level. lol
Was it the monkey puzzle part? Man, I hated that part. That, and getting the pattern down for the ostrich at the end... yeah, that game is a lot harder than it looks indeed. >:0
Yes, Lion King and that level would be my candidate too. Lion King has fine controls, and seems easy and cute enough at first. Suitable for kids.

But that level is brutal.
The Ostrich is the part I couldn't get past. The monkey puzzle was annoying, but I'm STILL not sure what I'm supposed to do for the ostrich part.
I don't think I've ever even played any other levels than the first two, so I'm not sure if it gets easier or even harder.

Hehe, yes. Exactly. Similar experience here! I think its merely running on the ostrich and ducking under the bushes, and jumping over branches. Its very easy to hit those branches and then just die. Its quite unforgiving. There's a place where I'm not sure if you have to double-jump to get over the branches or something, but I always die there. I think I managed to get through it once, but I have no idea how I did it, and couldn't do it again. Long time since I played it though!
But yes, its the perfect game for the thread. Its a game that should have been easier than a Kirby Game, but that ostrich part is so difficult it sort of ruins it.

it actually does get harder I remember being like WTF DO I DO for the monkey puzzle but once I figured it out it was a neat little puzzle. But the Ostriches, that part sucks

I would add that Athena on the NES was also pretty difficult.
That, and the part that involved swinging from the hippo tails. You had to be precise or you were screwed. I remember having AVGN-level rage for that part back in the day
It looks cutesy, but Smurfs 2 on Genesis (well, Mega Drive) is surprisingly nasty. It only gives you a password at long intervals, and some of those levels are a rough ride even on Easy.
Really, a lot of cartoon/Disney platformers on Genesis are harder than you'd expect, especially the second-tier ones. Marsupilami, TaleSpin, Fantasia, Asterix and the Great Rescue -- they're all pretty tough to get through, and all have major problems (I like Asterix, though).
Oh, and Kirby's Avalanche/Puyo Puyo was too easy for me. I never lost a single game on X-Band, so I kinda figured it was harder for other people. It's been ages since I've tried to play so I probably suck now.
It's not too bad playing against a friend. I just couldn't get far against the computer.
This is a PERFECT example of a game that appears at first glance to look like it's something for fans of Barney the purple dinosaur (is he still around anymore?)...but upon trying to play it you end up looking more like Barney Fife at a quickdraw contest!

I've always felt that Bart's Nightmare would be better off as a LCD or gameboy game, the game lacks substance. All of the nes games are much better. They should have made the simpsons arcade game on the snes/genesis.
Little Nemo on the NES gets difficult pretty fast.
The StarTropics games on the NES are ones I've always found difficult.
Yoshi's Island DS is pretty tough too, especially if you are expecting something along the difficulty of the previous games (Yoshi's Island on the SNES or Yoshi's Story on the N64).
Super Monkey Ball gets pretty insane on the highest difficulties. It's a game for hardcore speedrunners on CRTs, not little babies who like monkeys!
Agreed here. I find it easier to use the baby monkey on higher difficulties because he's easier to orient over thin platforms than his standing bretheren. I've beaten every stage on both 1 and 2, and took a very long time to accomplish. The Wii ones are a whole new can of worms, though.
In this vein, Marble Saga Kororinpa is nothing to sneeze at.

...until you get to that SOB. One of the more frustrating bosses I've EVER come across
Hatris on NES.
really? i found that pretty enjoyable, a little bit cheap sometimes, but still fun.
Aladdin on the Sega Genesis.
Yeah. That's true. That game is much harder than it seems like it would be.

That thing is awesome! But yeah, it looks brutal.
Super Mario Bros. Most casual players are actually pretty terrible at this game.
That's a fair point. I had a friend come over one time who wanted to play it. Couldn't beat 1-1.

Breezed through that too.
That's why I preferred Tetris Attack.

Forgot about this one. It's so fun and easy to start out, but I don't think I've even gotten close to the ending.
Bump n Jump. I've replaced two controllers out of Rage on that game. No likey! But I will beat it one day
Came here to say Bump n Jump. Spent countless hours on that heartless bitch. Fun game that I will conquer one day.

Minus the part about one day beating the game. I don't know if I have that in me.

My cat could beat 1-1! Well he could if he had thumbs...
Seriously that has got to be a joke. I hope...
