1982 : EA, Lucasfilm Games, MicroProse all form, Zaxxon, Ms. Pac Man, Dig Dug, Donkey Kong Jr, Pole Position, Q*Bert, Joust, Sinistar, Robotron 2084, Moon Patrol, BurgerTime, Utopia, River Raid, Chopper Command, Yars' Revenge, Pitfall, Microsoft Flight Simulator, Sokoban, the ZX Spectrum and Commodore 64 are released, as is the Vectrex, ColecoVision, Atari 5200, and Bally Astrocade. The peak of the bubble, before it all came crashing down.
1994 : Super Metroid, FF6, Sonic 3, Warcraft, Donkey Kong Country, Killer Instinct, Mega Man X, TIE Fighter, Jazz Jackrabbit, Sonic & Knuckles, System Shock, Darkstalkers, Super Street Fighter II Turbo, Mother 2, Doom 2, Master of Orion, Earthworm Jim, Tekken, release of the PS1, Super Game Boy, formation of Blizzard and Neversoft, ESRB founded, ESA trade group formed, and Willy Higinbotham bids us farewell. The last moments of innocence before the 3D world took us away for twenty years or so, and indie and mobile helped revive 2D games.
You convinced me. 1982 was pretty bad ass for games.
Given your lambasting of the N64 in the other thread, I'm curious what 1998 releases make you pick that year.
I think 98 was Squaresoft's best year ever with Xenogears, FF Tactics, Einhander and even Brave Fencer & Parasite eve were pretty good You also have one of the best games ever made in Starcraft coming ot along with other great PC FPS games like Half Life and Unreal, Shogo, and many others. You also had Metal Gear Solid.
On top of that you could throw in the shitty N64 games like Zelda 64 and Goldeneye if you want to even count stuff like that as well.
Definitely agree here for sure. Square, SC, and pokemon were HUGE components in the gaming world.
Also gonna add the following to the 1998 list in addition to all the amazing games listed above. I believe they all were 98 at least.
RE 2
Gran Turismo
Banjo Kazooie
Pokemon Red and Blue (this year was the start of a craze that still burns today)
Comments
I also really enjoy many other titles like Oddworld, Mystical Ninja, Battlezone, and on and on. Very nostalgic time for me.
Pac Man
Centipede
Missle Command
BattleZone
Warlords
I'll throw out two votes:

1994 or 1998 would be my picks.
