PS2 Collecting is Annoying, Difficult, Frustrating, and Awesome

  • I'm interested in hearing about any unlicensed PS2 games. Anything that you could get at your basic retail store or even any home brews that might exist. Was it Ps1 or PS2 that had the educational discs that were used in schools?
  • That was the Lightspan Adventures for PS1.  I have 2 boxes of discs- one is the Mathematics SuperPack, the other is Reading/Language Arts SuperPack.  Absolutely no idea of what percentage of the total set I have- seems like dupes and gaps.  Of course since it was a school they drew all over the discs with Sharpies.  I want to say there were roughly 200 discs altogether.  Been awhile.

Rizzorob had a nice story about them.

    And if you like PS1:

    http://www.atensionspan.com/PSX-WIP-RC-N.xls

I gave up on it because I had no means to verify my information.  Still, tons and tons of info I scraped together back in the day.

Also, on my evilbadman site, click on the Playstation Cover Archive letters (the letters above the PS2 pic).  The PS2 section at the top I started on when I had like 700 releases, and in hindsight I should have kept all those releases sealed    Someday I'll circle back around and get to scanning, but that damn real life thing gets in the way.  And anyways, manuals is my latest focus...

A little background.  Years ago I helped Cowering with the GoodSNES and GoodN64 databases before he went public with his rom tools.  Great times.  Anyways, we bitched and bitched about having to hunt down all the differents cartridges so they could be dumped and verified (NES was being a pain at the time).  So with Playstation winding down and this new-fangled Playstation 2 being announced, I said:

"Hey- I got this.  Whenever a PS2 game gets down to $20, I'll just snag a copy so we have one 100% fresh real copy to go off of.  PSX had 500ish releases, so even with maybe 2 a week I should be able to drop $40 a week for maybe the next 6 years and this will be f'n awesome."

Ahahahahahah.  I was such an idiot.

Nice. Our lists are off by one game. Not too shabby.

  • Collecting ps2 was so annoying. Every time I turned around there was something else I didn't have. I'm selling my collection currently and there doesn't seem to be much interest. I have several variants. Including most of the guitar hero games factory sealed with one and two guitars as well

Either way. Good luck to everyone collecting ps2 for sure. N if u r collecting demos. N that's a whole other story. I had most of those as wel as one point lol. And then there are the magazine demos. Ehhhhhh
  • Hit a different Vintage Stock today since it was only about 20 minutes away and had the same B2G1 sale. Came up with a handful of some decent finds. The big Box is factory sealed. This lot also pushed me past 1200

This one is what made me the happiest. Been on my radar for some time now, but could never find one at a decent price. After the sale and tax, came out to be $4.28

What do you use while you're out shopping to track what you need and what you have? Do you use an app on your phone or is it pen and paper? So far I've been going by memory. I've picked up a few accidental doubles and  I'd imagine soon enough I'm going to have to bring something with me to keep it from happening more often. I have the PS2 collector app on my iPad. Not sure how accurate it is but it would be good enough to keep me from buying doubles. I'll probably end up printing out K1rkl4nds list and using that to keep track of what I have and what I don't so I don't have to lug around my iPad.

Edit: Or I could use your list, I just saw that you posted it.
  • Yeah, the list I posted is the one I use for when I'm out. I have it saved on my phone and use Google Sheets to view it. I tried doing pen/paper, but it ended up being like 12 pages long and just felt awkward.

Trust me, I've gotten many a double for not having my list on me  . I think KoF XI was the worst for me. I think I picked up 4 copies until I could remember that I already had it.

I had some free time (haha) so I added in some Bonus disc and movie ticket variants to the list I uploaded before (skim down to "Final Thoughts"- I added the sections after that).  If I have time tomorrow I'll dig through the dungeon and see what I missed..

Looking good. Just skimmed it, but I think you can add Tomb Raider with ticket. Spiderman 3 with coupon and with ticket.

Here's a good place to find some variants: http://playstationcollecting.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=75&threadid=154809&StartRow=1#bottom
  • Excellent post from ahans76.  I don't add stuff to my lists until I see some hard evidence that it exists.  That's part of why so many lists out there are messed up- they have bad data.  For years I think it was IGN that posted the wrong SLUS code for a Simpson's game and *everyone* just kept passing the same bad number around on checklists.  Then there were announced but cancelled games (or limited edition releases that ended up being PAL exclusive).  Or a few with name changes.

SLUS-21401 Equestriad on your list is "Lucinda Green's Equestrian Challenge".  That was another common one that until you had the disc in hand you kept looking in the "E"s at the store and coundn't find it.

On the movie ticket list, I had just gotten through King Kong when I called it a night.  (Getting old and lazy)

So I see ahans76 has the Meet the Robinsons variation, but I'm sitting on the Canadian release- it has a cardboard slipcover and a French language manual between it and the shrinkwrapped game.

Variants keep me up at night.

  • I think I'm around over 100-something (?) games on the PS2 so far. OP is right, it's pretty cheap to collect for. Most of the budget titles are pretty fun to play too.

Right now, I'm only focusing on the rare and uncommon, mostly because I really have no room to fill up the place with games you can easily get. Plus, the rare stuff is sometimes cheaper than the common stuff since nobody really knows about it to drive the demand of it yet. lol

I hope to remember to take a pic of some of the highlights when I get home from work.
  • Here's my latest PS2 pickups. No crazy deals lately, but I grabbed some good games I've been looking for. Also, another great transaction with Dr. Robbie. Anyone looking for good PS2 games at good prices should check out his FS thread.

  • I wish I would have stocked up on brand new PS2 clamshells back in the day. Today every single PS2 game I find is in a completely trashed, ripped, punctured, and/or scuffed up case. I see games all the time I would buy but I don't want them in my collection looking the way they do. I feel like as difficult as it is now to find PS2 games in good shape it will be almost impossible in the future. It's like no one took care of these games.

And why is it everywhere I go there are always like 15 copies of Power Drome?
  • For some reason disc based games never stay with me. I still have the systems, ps1,ps2,xbox, but between moves and trading as a kid,I have only a couple games for each system left

That's weird. I feel like the PS2 games have kept their condition more than most games. Yeah, some are trashed, but usually stickers are the worst things I come across (and they're cleanable too, which is nice). Wonder if location is a big factor for this.

And as far as common games go, I feel like someone must have added an extra digit when they ordered Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec Greatest Hits. I swear it's like the staple PS2 game that is EVERYWHERE.

Went to visit the inlaws this weekend and had a couple nice finds. Got Ape Escape 3 CIB for $10 and a few other minor finds. When I came home, had a couple of PS2 boxes waiting for me. Madden 08 En Espanol was the highlight as that one's been pretty tough to track down, but had a few others to add to the collection. Up to 1243 total games. Also, added a few more rows to the ground. Closet will soon be inaccessable. Need to start working more on finishing my basement

  • Thought I would share my little collection. I have probably gotten 100 games from dr.robbie so huge thanks to him lol, and a few others on here selling inserts/manuals have helped me complete a ton of them. I am a hair under 1000 unique games. Also a little shot of my genesis and wii u collection. 400 genesis, and a complete to date wii u set. Just need a few variants im missing for it.

  • I've been busy working on my basement, but picked up a few quality / hard to find titles this week:

Singstar Latino is a pain to find it seems. Also, now that I've got Obscure out of the way, I believe that I have all of the higher priced games (save for one game... still working on it :-/)

Man, those look freaking sweet shelved like that.

  • Here's my pickups from the last few weeks and a good example of why I love collecting PS2(other than the fact that I find myself thoroughly enjoying almost every game that I give a real chance).

I scored an awesome lot on ebay last week. For a grand total of about $78 shipped I got a silver Slim system with cables, over 50 games mostly complete, three controllers, a memory card, and a 19 inch LCD TV. Cant fucking beat that deal.

Here's a bunch of games I got off my usual trifecta of Dr. Robbie, Ebay, and the local shops. I'd been wanting to get Parappa 2 and MvC2 for a while so I was happy to be able to trade some crap in to get those without having to fork over any cash. Some of the other games I'd never heard of or hadn't played yet and they ended up being a lot of fun. That's another thing I love about PS2, and I know it's been said many times but there are a large number of hidden gems out there waiting to be discovered. You might look at most of these games and say " No chance in hell I'd ever touch that game" but if you give these games an honest chance, you will have fun with a high percentage of them. I had never heard of Mystic Heroes or Nightshade before but both games were a lot of fun when I popped them in over the weekend. Some of these games, like Valkyrie Profile and Odin Sphere, will require quite a bit of time but after a short play test I could definitely see myself sinking the hours into them in the future. Games like Breeders Cup and Puzzle Challenge are fun little time sinks for those lazy afternoons when you're going through your wall of games popping in random PS2 games.

Also picked up the Magna Carta Deluxe Box Set

One fun PS2 side project I have is collecting pre-release promo/E3 swag. I love all the cool little things that get put out to promote games. I found a seller on ebay that has been unloading stuff he received from his time as a game reviewer, for a magazine I think. Unfortunately I caught him just as he is running out of stuff to sell but I did manage to get this awesome promo pirate flag for Rogue Galaxy.( random game shown for size comparison)

    image

And a nice Zone Of The Enders promo flyer /poster.

Here are some cool press releases I got from the same seller. I think its fun and interesting to see stuff like this. My favorite is the press release announcing the Fatal Frame movie that never ended up coming out.

And here are some shirts given away at E3 for PS2 games. My favorite being the GTA III. I may have posted these before, not sure, but they are cool so what the hell.

    Serious Sam

    Manhunt

  • Some very sweet collections going in this thread. Thanks for sharing, y'all. I have something pathetic like 7-10 PS2 games. I was never a Sony guy, but I do like the system and hope to cherry pick some choice titles slow-turtle style over the coming years.

I mostly just wanted to drop in and show some appreciation for the die-hards up in here, going after it.
  • I just started re-building my PS2 collection several months ago (I had about 110 titles several years ago). I'm up to 150 titles, have replaced maybe 1/4 of the titles I had, and I've barely spent anything. Gotta love how many games you can get for $1-2 a pop. I'd say there are about 400 more titles I'd possibly be interested in

I've also been allowing myself to replace one lost title, regardless of price, every two weeks. Last one was Skygunner. Super happy to get that one back as it was one of the first titles I originally bought.

And Sub Rebellion rocks. You guys picking it up need to play it.
  • Actually it looks like I've already replaced 50 titles. So 60 to go
  • That promo stuff is awesome Chris - especially the rogue galaxy flag.

I'm one of the few people that actually likes Silent Service and Sqoon on the NES so I will definitely be playing Sub Rebellion when I get the chance. I guess I'm a fan of submarine games.

  • Well in that case get Treasures of the Deep too. Great game.
  • I have Sub Rebellion, and I'll take In The Hunt over Metal Slug any day (if I had to choose).

I'm at like 80 PS2 games, and I'm pretty content. Think maybe I might get to about 100, but I'm not terribly interested in going for much more than that. I go primarily for exclusives, and the import library is what really got me in PS2 collecting...although I should probably at least get some shooters to go with my fighting games (Hokuto no Ken is my fav). I did cave and get a copy of Gladius on PS2 even though I already had it on GC and Xbox, but only because I found a cheap sealed copy.

  • Okay, I lied earlier... I don't have 100, but under 240! lol I love to go out and try and find all the ones that don't seem too common.

    Here's some of my highlights:

Dig that Nights Into Dreams on PS2!

It's fact that once you had an "in your face cover", the "action pose" cover will soon follow.   Here's a couple of variants of Sly Cooper and Star Wars Bounty Hunter:

    Few on the shelf:

Few on a BROKEN shelf that I've yet to fix:

  • Some of my recent pick-ups. Mostly random titles, but a few decent ones. Driver Parallel Lines LE is a pain to find CIB. Puts me at 1322 I believe.
