Games That "Look" Easy, But Are Actually Hard

  • Recently, "DK Country: Tropical Freeze" and "The Wonderful 101" fit that bill.
  • Earthworm Jim and Zombies Ate My Neighbors which have already been mentioned. Was able to beat Zombies Ate My Neighbors recently with a game genie but can't find codes for Earthworm Jim so I get a few levels in and never much further. If anyone knows codes for that one let me know.

Would have to add other SNES titles like Gradius III, Doom, and Super Ghouls and Ghosts. Great games but good luck on those without a game genie.
  • How about Amagon?

That game always kicks my ass, haha...

That's a fair point. I had a friend come over one time who wanted to play it. Couldn't beat 1-1.

My cat could beat 1-1!  Well he could if he had thumbs...

Seriously that has got to be a joke.  I hope...

    I wish it was...

I can confirm, as I was one of those filthy casuals at one point  I started gaming on SNES and didn't really get into NES until I started collecting. No joke, I tried SMB, Megaman 2 and Rescue Rangers and got my ass handed to me. Fucking rescue rangers! If you're new to NES there is definitely a learning curve. The style of game is completely different than the Xbox 360 I was used to at the time
  • Disney's Adventures in the Magic Kingdom. If I were a little kid and this game was my only impression of what Disneyland was like, I would be terrified to go. I recently bought the game still haven't beaten any of the attractions. It's pretty fun, though. Love the graphics and music is Capcom quality if unremarkable.

I used to play that at a friend's house growing up. We loved playing it, but you're right--it was hard! I remember getting frustrated as kids because it was a Disney game, and we still couldn't beat it.

Was it the monkey puzzle part? Man, I hated that part. That, and getting the pattern down for the ostrich at the end... yeah, that game is a lot harder than it looks indeed. >:0

I would add that Athena on the NES was also pretty difficult.

That, and the part that involved swinging from the hippo tails. You had to be precise or you were screwed. I remember having AVGN-level rage for that part back in the day

Oh man....that game can be a real bitch. I played it recently again and got to the stampede level and man was it a huge pain in the ass.

    Always wanted to beat it.

The current theory around that game was it was made difficult in the beginning mainly because that game was also a big rental back then. If someone where to rent it, it wouldn't have any longevity to be a worth-while rental. Heck, I wouldn't consider it even a worth while buy in that case, but I guess since the idea of renting could lead to buying, having a game that was easy to beat probably wouldn't do good with regular retail.

Not sure if any of that's true or not, but it's an interesting thing to note. So we may have rental stores and arcades (which were made to take quarters) to blame for the reasons why games were so hard. lol

I rented that game almost every time I went to the local rental store back in the 90s... I don't know why I never bought it until ~2008.

I'd buy that notion. It makes sense, in a way. At least for the mainstream releases from big companies.

Cousin got it for his 11th or 12th birthday and we ebat it the same day.

I was probably used to hard games beacuse my older brother used to buy those (SectionZ, Batman, Punch Out and Rad Graity for example). Disney games were really easy compared to those.

    This makes total sense.
  • I'd say Skuljagger falls into that category. I've popped in a few times but I can never get by the first boss. Or maybe I'm just missing something.
