Killing it out there with the original Xbox!!!

It's no secret that games for the original Xbox have hit rock bottom prices, especially compared to the other systems of the 6th generation. Man, lately I have been walking into shops and scooping up stacks of Xbox games for 1-3 bucks apiece... and thats for GOOD GAMES, not shitty sport titles. It's crazy how cheap they are right now. I gotta say that at this very moment in time, your absolute best bang for your buck as a video game collector is the original Xbox. With over 800 titles, there's a plethora of great games in the mix plus around 200 system exclusives. Only a couple dozen games are over 20 bucks; as for games over 50 bucks? I can count them on one hand! Plus, the Xbox was known as an adult system and personally when I find games they tend to be in VG condition and complete, which is awesome.

Yesterday I picked up about 12 games at a local shop for 20 dollars. A few of the games from that loot include, Headhunter: Redemption, The Suffering: Ties That Bind, Constantine, and Rogue Ops. Clearly, for under 2 bucks a game, this is awesomeness!

As for my personal Xbox collecting, it began several years ago. I originally worked on my PS2 complete set and was aiming only for Xbox exclusives not on PS2. In recent weeks, I decided to start picking up any Xbox multi-platform games as long as they were inexpensive and CIB. I have added quite a few as a result.

I can't be the only person on this ship?

  • I finished that system awhile ago. I would say it is the easiest to collect for. The only things I have that are kind of hard to get are not really part of the complete set, the Steel Battalion Test version (these are retail disks) and Barbarian NTSC (no case or manual, just gray final NTSC retail copy with info on it).
  • I almost started collecting for xbox, but I just enjoyed the PS2 much more, so I went that route. No doubt that anyone interested in the Xbox should be hunting like crazy right now as this is the perfect time to buy. Even PS2 has started to climb a bit, but Xbox is still very low.
  • Got Conker for $3 last weekend. Still have two copies of Steel Battalion and some sealed controllers (L & S). Don't know what happened to my sealed Japanese Edition S controller (limited Best Buy exclusive). I do have a couple of the green-jewel prototype/early XBOX controllers including one that has never been used. My XBOX collecting is otherwise pretty limited since my original console hasn't worked in years.
  • Bought around 600 ps2 and xbox games from 1 guy a few years ago. No sports titles included and all were in case 90% with paperwork. I paid around $550 for them all. Sold off all the doubles (around 100) anywhere from $1-$20 each. In the end I paid a something like $0.40 a game lol.

I still have no idea what drove me to buy them since I was not a massive fan of either system. I think I had not bought a big lot in a while and was iching to get something to sit and clean for a werk and resell the doubles. I am glad I did now since I have 2 instant collections.

Was def a nice couple of months collecting there in that pic.
  • The price for quality of OG Xbox is amazing. I started collecting it because it felt like the old days where you could get top games like Super Mario Bros. 3 and TLOZ in $2 bins all day. The rare games are usually cheap, actual rarity and price are kind of all over the place and don't correlate very well right now. With a couple exceptions like Teen Titans and OutRun 2006, the non-LE rarer stuff is mostly easy to get right now. Games like Red Card 2003, World Racing 2, AMF Xtreme Bowling 2006, ESPN NBA 2Night 2002, V-Rally 3... it sure doesn't hurt to get them while prices literally can't drop any lower or they'd be free, not that I think Xbox games are ever going to be particularly valuable. It's Xbox after all.

Would you not consider the LE games part of the full set? I think some of them are definitely harder than kind of hard to find, although your definition of hard to find is probably another universe from mine:
    • The 3 Walmart LE NASCAR games (Two I guess you could consider variants, but 07 is a legit LE)
    • Action Double Pack Halo/Brute Force (Never ever seen a non-stock picture of this, but people talk about it like it exists)
    • Darkwatch Coffin Limited Edition
  • I saw about 10 cib xbox games at a garage sale a month ago and they all looked like quality games. Sadly, I don't have an xbox so I passed on them. Kindof wishing I had just grabbed them since they were so cheap but oh well. This thread has made me want to look for a cheap console now so maybe I'll start collecting xbox soon!

You should be able to get a console for under $35. Definitely worth grabbing. Can output 720p and a majority of multi-platform games from the era are much better on Xbox.
  • Xbox seems to be the only system I never see games for... like ever. I don't know why. PS2 for days, but rarely Xbox. Maybe a few crap racing games from time to time with old, dusty consoles, but never in quantity or quality.
  • I love these xbox threads. Good to see its getting some spotlight. Xbox is kinda like a cousin of the dreamcast with some great sega stuff like outrun 2006, spikeout, otogi, crazy taxi 3, panzer dragoon orta etc. Its the best graphically of the 3 at the time (ps2, gc). Definitely one of my favourite consoles.

  • At one neighborhood yard salea while ago I was talking to someone about their xbox games, since I had the PS2 variants of most of them, but didn't buy them because I don't own the system. She ended up giving them to me when I was about to leave, saying they'd just go to goodwill. Since then I've been picking them up any chance I get, with most of them being great quality games, but I still don't have a system   . Right now I'm looking to get one, but those eBay prices...

yeah well the thing weighs as much as a car so shipping is the main problem  you shouldn't have a hard time finding one local for a good price though
  • I usually play my Xbox games on my CRT in 480i, but the other day I decided to check out some of the 720p games on my HDTV. I am blown away at how good some of these games look via component input. "The Warriors" in 720p looks like an early Xbox 360 game. The original Xbox continues to impress me.

Can't find a pic of it unfortunately and don't know a whole lot except that it's the holy grail of OG Xbox as far as I'm concerned. IIRC it was some kind of online exclusive you could only buy with community "points". You can see it in the darkwatch.org store on internet archive:

Keep an eye out at Goodwill.  I've never paid for than $20 for one, and that's including a controller and all cables.  It's got the be the most commone console I see at GW.

Other cool variants are a Darkwatch pack-in T-Shirt and 50 Cent Bulletproof with Vest. Xbox had a surprising about of cool variations and pack-ins.

I'm currently going for the dozens and dozens games that had variants with soundtrack/bonus discs or bundled mini strategy guides and movie tickets. They are cheap and lots of them are really tough to find, my favorite combination in game collecting! I also dig the Microsoft Employee Store Purchase stickers on boxes for whatever reason. They're real easy to find, I even find them at Goodwill.
  • Don't know if I will ever go for original Xbox. Cheap, but I have to make a cutoff somewhere and while I enjoyed the Xbox more than the PS2, I think Sega, Nintendo, and Sony is what I will stick with for collecting. Sony may be cut at some point as well. I do have a modded Xbox with a ton of games on the harddrive though so I will still be playing it for years to come.

Totally!!! My favorite is the Enclave mini guide and the Exhibition series.
  • xBox collecting has gotten stale for me in terms of finding stuff. It's been a month since I've added a game. I'm just not finding anything locally, and if I do I have it already.

The plan is to re-count the collection and then start adding again in a couple months or so.
  • I'm always on the lookout for original Xbox stuff. It's the best system for finding deals on. Although, I've probably only got 30 games, despite owning the system since launch. I only buy games I know I'll play. I don't collect for the sake of collecting, anymore.

Have you picked up any cheap games on a whim and ended up enjoying them?

This is my one exception to that rule. I'm probably not going to play Elder Scrolls, especially since I have a PC, but might as well buy it when I find it.
  • I never owned the original Xbox (too big and clunky) but I did purchase a 360 which plays many original Xbox games, including the amazing Fable the Lost Chapters. I think the first game  is by far the best in the series. Great music, great story, great everything really. Not perfect, but fabulous. Nice that the 360 supports backwards compatiability like that! Oh yeah, and original Xbox games are dirt cheap...
  • Xbox is a good system but for that era I feel that you have to pick 1 console for the multi-platform titles. PS2 has always been my main console from that time period so the only thing I get for Xbox are exclusives. As far as Xbox exclusives, I'd say there's around 40-80 worth owning IMO. Some games have compilations or updated versions that are on 360 or XB1 too.

It's interesting when you look at PS2 slim next to the original Xbox...one is a huge tank and one is a tiny box. One can't play DVDs and the other can. Both can output via component. One is backwards compatible with another console's library and the other isn't (obviously). They both offer fun exclusives but I'd say PS2 is probably the tougher one to collect for. I don't really collect for either other than games that interest me and exclusives.

You can play DVD"s on the Xbox, but I think you need a "playback kit"

Also, I beleive the visual output of the Xbox is better (even though both are component)

But I definitely agree that sitting the PS2 slim next to the Xbox is hilarious.

I would personally get multi-plats on Xbox and exclusives on PS2 mainly because of the price of Xbox games.
