Are Amiibos the next beanie babies?

Amiibos were a nice collectible/gimmick depending on your perspective at first but lately I have been seeing a lot of them at retro game shops to the point that they have more second hand amiibos for sale than actual games.  Do you still buy them?  When do you think they will slow down making these things or stop all together?

  • I have a collective total of 1 Amiibo, for my daughter, because she thought it was cute. Aside from that, very little desire to have these. Again, personal feelings here, if they dropped to a $1 each still in box I'd consider picking them up. Just doesn't really do it for me ...
  • As long as people buy them for enjoyment - rather than "investments" I think everything will be just fine.

Too many folks back in the day hoarded Beenie Babies as a pipedream retirement plan.

    Collect what you enjoy.

**for the record I am not a fan of Amiibos.
  • I was down for amiibo at first. I bought the majority of the first wave and have slowly bought less and less over time. Once it was all about which ones were rare and people lining up overnight to get them I decided fuck that noise. A current, mass produced product should never be made artificially scarce and the minute that happens, I tap out. I bought them because I thought they were nice little figures, but I shouldn't have to pay more or put in more work than necessary to acquire the ones I want. I still pick 1 or 2 up every now and then and I always said if I ever have to resort to paying above retail on ebay that'll be the last one I buy.
  • nintendos decision to reprint them like mad, really killed interest and buzz. When all of them are readily available people always say how great it would be when they dont, but then they do and the whole thing dies. This is what i and others were talking about. Reprinting of the really old ones after months and months out of nowhere killed it. That marth, villager, little mac flooding was the beginning of the end.

That alongside them not ever finishing the smash set with the last 3 made people forget about them imo. They better release those.

being a nintendo product theyll always hold some value. A few of them more than others.

Lol I remember that thread. Its been a while since an amiibo thread has popped up. What a flash in the pan those were.

I hear they make excellent butt plugs.
  • Beanie Babies was a phenomena that was hard to keep on the shelves. Amiibos are just little trinkets in a dying genre of virtual toy / game crossovers. Much like how the guitar hero / rock band far before it.

    Next we'll have VR.
  • I've changed my stance a bit on them. They're cool as a little figure, and I buy the ones of characters I like. The people that bought them as an investment to leave sealed were the ones that ruined the fun with them, and they got hosed big time when the bottom fell out with the reprints.

I'll keep buying them as they come, they won't quite be like Beanie Babies since they'll at least be worth a few bucks years from now, but they certainly won't be like NES or SNES games are.

    Exactly this.

I actually had really good times collecting them when they first came out. It was stressful at times but it was a fun thing to collect. Now that they are so readily available and continue to get reprints, it's just not that fun. I had an entire Smash collection, loose and boxed, but I'm regretting the boxed set because I don't have anywhere to display them and they have no value. Still, there's only 3 left so I might as well complete it and hold on to it when they come out.

I'm still buying them though. I do think they make cool display pieces. I'm only missing a couple from Animal Crossing (which I'll get eventually for cheap) and the Skylander ones (which I don't care about).

    People are already playing VR.

But yea, Amiibos are just part of the figure fade (skylanders, infinity, etc). And Nintendo cashed in huge at the right time.

The Shovel Knight Amiibo is cool, I bought that one because it unlocks a two playa mod in the game, which has been a blast to play.

  • I enjoyed them at first had the whole of the first two waves. Never had an issue preordering them, but they look very cheap and prices were crazy so I sold them and bought some more games. Never looked back. Don't even know which ones are out there anymore. I don't think they will drop like Beanie Babies though.
  • The fad is definitely dying down, but I'd say they're a little different from the other figure lines in that they're a Nintendo product, can be used for multiple different games, aren't required to have a full experience, and that most people who bought them did so more so to have a display piece rather than using them in any major way. I still see them fly off the shelf when used ones come into my local game stores, compared to Skylanders, and Infinity to a lesser extent.

The reprints and the Smash line nearing it's end is what started killing it. I don't know anyone who cared that much about the Mario/AC/Kirby figures when they came out. Zelda/Splatoon/Shovel Knight had some good interest.

Personally once the remaining Smash DLC characters come out ($5 says Nintendo is waiting to announce an NX port first) I'm never buying anymore and will make a nice display shelf for my complete Smash collection.
  • So many people admitting a part of why they collected these is because of value, this tells me everything i need to know about the mindset of a lot of collectors. It is sad really.
  • I don't think so.
  • I see some parallels in the Nintendo eReader Card-e market.
  • They were truly a flash in the pan kind of thing, and the people that stockpiled them praying and hoping they wouldn't get reprints and that they'd make a fortune (off little pieces of plastic) ... ..deserve what they got to be honest.

I've never had any interest in them aside fun little shelf fillers, and have only gotten the ones I have (3 total) dirt cheap and second hand.

They must!   Gotta go bump my thread now.

  • Nintendo has reprinted most of the rare ones over here, as well thankfully.

It makes it easier for people who just want to get an Amiibo to use to get one.

My friend has always wanted a Charizard, ever since it was first announced. But it was very hard to find, until now, and he was able to get one for the normal retail price.
  • This is just one of many events where we get to see the worse side of collecting, speculation for profit and hoarding of anything predicted to be rare for resale. I am just gald Nintendo does not put numbered amiibos or anything else to make these rare on purpose.
  • There will still always be people who want it because they like the character, so a few years from now I can see Nintendo keeping up with these by expanding into their series more in depth. Then again if they do by 2025 they'll have all the original pokemon  . And people would want it.
  • Amiibos died a while back, as in like a year ago. There are a couple that still go for $30+ ish, but not many. I think one of the biggest downfalls besides reprints was that people started to realize you can't actually do much with them. They're only used in a handful of games, and what they unlock in these games is minimal. Smash gets you the most use out of amiibos, but it kinda gets old after a little while since all they do is create a harder computer opponent, but that's it. I was pretty disappointed with shovel knight because I still don't even know what he was supposed to unlock. I tried for a half hour and didn't notice any new unlocked stuff. Amiibos still look really cool, so they'll always be collectible as cool figurines, but that's about it.
  • I only bought 2, Luigi and Megan-Man. There are a couple more I want, but I'm trying to cut out the buying of video game toys (even though these are technically accessories).
  • butt plugz 4 life.

It's a good thing nobody collects Nintendo games and memorabilia as a pipe dream retirement plan.

  • To the many resellers in my area who bought out the rare amiibos in hopes of flipping them.

I think you are wrong. People are ssying it isnt as fun to collect ehen you work hard. Get the ones you want or miss out. . Wait months. Reprints dont come. You buy one for reasonable over retail or trade and then they just reprint them in enormous waves out of the blue and flood them everywhere. Guess what? Thats just not that fun to collect and kills the fun. Part of the fun is hunting some down..

Just because someone thinks reprints ruined the fun, doesnt mean they collected them for monetary vslue. Your view is warped if thats what you actually think

Oh my bad i forgot the way you view collecting and how you view collecting is the "right way" to collect. Please
  • I will always be thankful to the venerable Amiibo for the countless millions of dollars they sucked out of resellers that would otherwise have used that money to continue raping and pillaging actual games we will still care about in 5/10/15 years from every yard sale and flea market in the world. I have the same respect for all the fad figurines, the last 15 years of Pokemon cards, etc etc.

Within a year we will start to see countless millions of Amiibos and Funko Pops sitting unsold at every yard sale and flea market. Eventually you will be able to buy them for a dollar apiece like the beanie babies before them.
  • Yes and it was obvious from day one. Limited release at holidays equals crazies, then supply catches up and interest dwindles as they make too many more figures.
