Dumb eBay/PayPal Question

I won an auction, paid the seller's invoice, then the seller (9 days later) sent me a message from within ebay (legit) that I have to cancel the payment and send it to his other email address. Huh wha?!?

Question #1: Do I have to? Seems like I might be negating buyer's protection. This seller has 12 feedback, so I'm more than hesitant.

Question #2: Does this happen to you? I have a feeling this person saw the fees then decided they wanted to circumvent them by using a non-Premier account. I dunno what I'm talking about, so if that's wrong, ok.

Any advice?

  • contact ebay and ask? I know they can be a pain to deal with , but they'll be able to tell you I would think, and at least have an open file on the auction if something shady happens.
  • Do you really want to deal with a dude that waited 9 days after you paid to tell you this? Was it a super expensive item?

  • The item was $70, so not super expensive, but enough to be careful. I took Udisi's advice and called eBay. I think I'm just so used to zero service from them that I assumed I would never get through to them. I was able to call them and have my ? answered in about 2 minutes flat -- not bad, I've got to admit.

The answer is that the seller must re-invoice me using the new paypal email address, but must include the ebay item #. If they don't, I can refuse until they do.
  • I had that happen once when I had the wrong PayPal email in one of my listings.

The email I used in the listing was not listed on my PayPal account, and I could not add it to my existing account because it was not a vaild email address.

So I just emailed the buyer and asked him to cancel the payment, and resend it to my correct email (that was on file with PayPal)
  • Yep you don't want to pay for anything that doesn't explicitly reference the listing, otherwise you won't have a leg to stand on with buyer protection.
