  • Epic find to both of you!

If anyone is wondering it appears to be the same as the final version.
  • Seems strange a proto would have been bought at a blockbuster. Wonder if someone switched it out at some point thinking the rental copy was better than their proto.
  • I still plan to install a CopyNES to make sure that it's the same but $70 is a bit much for my curiosity. Of course, ours may even be different from each other. I never played the original game to compare. I compared the title screen and first level with a YouTube long play and couldn't find any difference.

There's nothing odd about it coming from Blockbuster. It is not a former rental but, rather, a trade-in. All the BBV labels and stickers were on the shrink wrap and not the game pak. Remember "GameRush?" BBV was doing this even before they tried setting that up. This was clearly a traded in as a normal copy of Xexyz. The only former rentals I got back then were the ones that were that had been owned since and traded in (some had foil seals from other rental chains).
  • If anyone is interested, here is the video of me opening it for the first time:

Blockbuster had a used game program at some point, however I think it was just in some areas at the beginning. It didnt go nationwide untill the mid 2000's and it's something that most people didnt know existed. I found out about it over on CAG, and when I took items in to trade, they always accepted them even though there was no signage in the stores. They also had a weird way of doing trades because they were so focused on beating gamestops Trade in Value that many times they would take in games for more than they sold them for. I once traded in a game I bought on clearance at K-mart($1) for $20, then after completing the trade saw that they had another copy on the floor marked at $5 for sale.

Very cool. I'm guessing they they put out a lot of review copies on prototype boards for this particular game. Obviously, the label art had already been designed even if they couldn't get the orientation right on any of these.

  • I sent a PM to Mike_TV since his original pictures are being held at ransom by Photobucket. He uploaded some pictures to IMGUR:
