Odd problem with NES Open Tournament Golf cartridge

We all know how if a game isn't making the proper connection with the pin connector inside a NES, it can result in garbled graphics.

This is happening with my copy of NES Open Tournament Golf, but the only time I get garbled graphics is on the screen after you sink the ball in the hole. Where it's supposed to say "Birdie" (or whatever you got on the hole) and your total score, the screen shows garbled graphics.

Another weird problem though, is that the game will never let me change the club I'm using. The controls work in every other instance while playing the game, except for pressing up and down to change the club. It gives me the little sound effect when you change clubs but doesn't actually change the club.

Anyone have an idea of how this could possibly happen, and any ways to fix it? I tried rubbing alcohol, an eraser, and a magic eraser, but the problem persists in both of my NES consoles. Not a big deal since it's a cheap game but I'd like to avoid buying another copy if possible.

  • I think I might have an extra maskrom around for this game from a repro, shoot me a pm if you want it

Might also check if any of the components on the board look damaged
  • I've seen games with bad CHR RAM before and this is a CHR RAM game.
  • This sounds like either a bad PRG ROM or bad PRG RAM.

Even though the game uses CHR RAM, consider that it's only 8KB, or essentially one "bank" of CHR data, where a CHR ROM game can have several banks. Bad CHR RAM would show as the game being mostly garbled graphics. Seldom instances of corruption and program-related errors mean it's a PRG ROM problem in this case.

prg ram probably. that byte that holds club selection would be bad. could possibly account for graphics issues.
  • Did you look at the traces of the PCB also? Usually it's good but worth a look. If you got a multimeter check for continuity unless it is the prg maskroms for sure. If you really want.
  • The problem is consisting of individual bits (or bytes) of data, that wouldn't be caused by a broken PRG address or data trace. That would cause entire banks of data to be compromised.
