    Are you being facetious?

Neither looks like a gimmick, both aspects look useful.

(i.e. 2P gaming, on a single unit, portably, without needing to haul around full sized controllers -- i.e. parents only need one of these devices to satisfy kids on long trips)

No, I just wanted clarification. I just hope the build quality is on point. I can see it being useful in situations like you've mentioned I'm just wondering how many kids will bail on their tablets/DS for the switch. I just don't really see the mass appeal to the market when portability already exists. Playing local multiplayer with tiny controllers sharing a small screen doesn't seem like a game-changer either.

If most people who buy it play it on their TV with a pro controller, then all of these other features are pretty useless and a waste of resources/money. But the option is there for the customer I suppose which is a good thing.

Portability doesn't generally exist, at a reasonable price point, for games like Skyrim, mainline 3D Mario release, or mainline Zelda releases.

But I'm guessing you haven't spent much time waiting in airports or on long car rides if you don't appreciate how incredible local multiplayer on a portable game system would be...

I think the real question, is going to be how much of the cost is tied up in the tablet/detachable-control versus the base-station (that almost certainly has a supplemental GPU).

Because that is going to dictate whether they're able to have the device completely supersede their other portable devices, by selling it without the base station or pro-controller AS a new portable that plays full-console games.

I usually drive on trips and don't travel much but if I do, I just play a 3DS or Vita. Don't they already have a LAN on those to play with others that are near?

I get that this is the most powerful portable and I think that is the best feature going for it. Luckily Nintendo seems to be a little better with marketing than Sony was with the Vita (which is very powerful, has multiplayer and can be played on a TV through different methods) so they should be in good shape with the Switch if everything else hardware/software wise falls in place.

I'm sure those handhelds have LAN, of some sort, but then you need two devices and two copies of a game.

Being able to do that, on a trip, with a single device seems like a pretty big deal, to me.

I'm thinking about that aspect from the standpoint as a parent, and what sort of thing would be nice to have when traveling with kids, than I am as what I would do, personally, while traveling by car.  (though being able to game WITH them while waiting in an airport seems pretty great)

  • I don't think anyone mentioned a certain plus about the portability in this thread yet. With the WiiU, not all of your games could be played on the gamepad alone. Splatoon was my favorite game for that system, but I had to use both the gamepad and the tv for that. My wife and daughter don't always want to sit and watch me play a video game. So being able to sit on the couch with them while they watch tv shows or a Disney movie and I can play my new game I just bought for the console is a huge plus. You don't HAVE to take it out and go anywhere, but this level of portability offers a variety of bonuses to people in ways that don't appeal to everyone. It's a little bit of everything and that is what makes it so appealing to me. I knew I was going to buy it day one before the trailer. Now I just know that it really is doing the things I wanted from the beginning.
  • Its funny because I never thought that this thing was gimmicky at all when watching the video. Its actually pretty cool, and utilizes some great features that have been on the market for a while now.

Being able to divide a single controller so you can have native multiplayer is not a gimmick. Thats pretty damn cool IMO. And im not sure if it was mentioned here, not going to read 200+ posts, but in the basketball scene, did the two systems link together wirelessy so they could play multiplayer? And the portable thing is what Nintendo has been dominating for decades now. Soooo how is that gimmick?

There is no doubt that this things is awesome, and if done right it could change console gaming. However, Nintendo's track record right now isnt great. I have high hopes, but little faith.

The STRONG implication appears to be up to 8 (or maybe 16) systems in local multiplayer (from the Splatoon competition scene in the arena)

Like I said... I'd expect this to end up being a pretty big deal at conventions.

Thats a massive deal. Wasnt sure during the esports part, as they could have been on a wireless network, but there generally isnt wifi in the park haha. Seems like they covered a lot with this thing, just hope there is some quality game offerings

Yeah, the "outdoors" (i.e. implying no wifi available scene) only showed two systems linked.

So no telling the actual requirement for the 8-16 they showed (probably via wifi).

  • Did anybody tell Konami that this isn't a pachinko machine?
  • It was great timing on Nintendo's part to make this announcement now. Since playstation vr just luanched, and sony and microsoft console are now available in hd.
  • I don't see the Switch succeeding - I just don't get who will buy it, and I think they're making the same mistake as with the Wii U by putting all their eggs into one basket. With the Wii U, it was the controller - the entire trailer was about the controller - if you didn't care about the controller, then that was that - they didn't give you any other reason to buy the system.

The Switch is doing more of the same - 4 minutes showing that the system is portable. What if you don't care about portability? Then that's the end of that - no other reasons were given as to why you should buy the system instead of a competing product.

I'm on the "don't care about portability bandwagon" usually when I'm out and about, I'm working, or engaging the environment around me. I play games to relax at home. I'll still get one, my disappointment was in the realization that this is what Nintendo has in store for me for the next 4 to 5 years. With all the hype, I guess it's only natural to feel a bit let down. I don't see myself with Mom and Dad in the kitchen on Thanksgiving, playing Mario Kart on micro controllers, while the turkey is cooking. My typical day consists of getting up at 4am, starting work at 630am, leaving at 3pm and spending an hour in bumper to bumper traffic. After I get home, I may get to play games for a bit, until my wife gets home, and we get dinner ready. I'm in bed around 830pm or 9, to sleep and repeat. Weekends are spent out and about doing things, or running errands. I really don't have the lifestyle of the people in the trailer. I don't relate :/

because maybe you like nintendo games? why would they show people sitting their playing a normal system? cmon man. this complaint is ridiculous. What did they need to show to make you buy it? Its not going to be more powerful than the second iteration of the ps4 and xbox one. What are they freaking supposed to show? They teased games and some 3rd party stuff like skyrim to get people excited.

Its a reveal trailer for the system coming out in 6 months. They havent shown the games yet which is what matters.

So your telling me a boring ass trailer of someone sitting on the couch playing some games is the trailer you want to see? give me a break. People just looking to complain. Im not a huge portable game person but I can easily see me using it like that. Head over to a friends house with the tablet and be able to play local system link mario kart etc without having to bring tons of shit with me. Very convenient. I can see me playing a ton more with a friend by making it portable. I dont like sitting by myself playing multiplayer. Id rather be in the same room. Having my own screen and game and connecting that way would be great.

facepalm ...... you can still play anywhere in your house with the tablet. I dont understand. This doesnt change the fact you cant play the system. I dont know what you wanted from it, if portability isnt your thing, then what else did you want to see? Looks like a standard system at home that is capable of ps4 and xbox one level games. With the added feature of playing in any room you want or taking it with you on a trip or somewhere you have to wait a long time etc. I dont see how not relating to the people in the trailer changes anything.

"Liking Nintendo games" is not going to be enough for the system to compete in the marketplace, otherwise the Wii U would have succeeded. My concern is that with both the Wii U and the NX, they made the system about one little feature that I don't see the general public caring too much about, instead of showing people what else the console has to offer.

In the case of the NX, that feature is portability. Sure you can play the system without taking it on the go, but in that case what differentiates it from other home consoles? The fact that it's Nintendo? I'm sure there will be plenty of people who will buy it for that fact alone, but not enough for it to succeed.

You do realize that handheld alone has kept Nintendo in the business for the last 15-20 years.  This is the next generation of handheld gaming, and that's only half of it. I've never purchased a console day 1 in my life, but I'll be preordering this one asap.

The Wii U was a fart in the wind.

The Wii U was a fart in the wind.

Totally. And I hope that people are interested in handhelds and that the system succeeds, but the 3DS offered something more than just portability - it offered some great looking 3D graphics, and it did so without needing glasses. People don't always buy handhelds for portability - I bought my 3DS and 3DSXL for the 3D and the games it offered.

Another point I want to make is that technology is moving towards integration, not separation, and I question how much longer the handheld market will exist. People play games on smartphones and tablets now (which was not widespread when the original DS came out), which is far more convenient than having to bring around an extra device specifically for playing games not available via smartphone/tablet. If the Switch were able to stream games to any device over a network instead of having a dedicated device that must be used, that would be a grand slam (though perhaps not yet realistic considering how many places don't have Internet).

Granted, the NX also offers more than just portability, and perhaps that will be enough to convince the general public to buy it, but I still worry.
  • You should probably read the rest of my comment. They showed sone 3rd party games like skyrim, 2k, etc. They also listed several companies in on the system. They are making an effort. What were they suppose to show on an initial reveal?!?!
  • Sorry man but i dont even know a person that uses the 3d on the 3ds. Thats one of its least appealing features. 3ds is all about the games being fun and genres for everyone released for it.

3ds. Came out after the tablet and phone game phase hit and still sold ridiculously well. There isnt a cause for concern about portable gaming.
  • It's interesting that the dock is nothing more then a charging station and a means to give the TV a video signal. Wonder how much power they are cramming in to that portable.

Probably a Tegra X, or some similar derivative (definitely needs to be something more powerful than a Tegra K1, which is what is in the Shield/Tablet)

They are a pretty incredible all-in-one chips, and leveraging NVidia, it is going to make it a lot easier for 3rd parties to make and port games.  (skim through the Shield game store sometime to see how good these games can look on a 2-year-old tablet)

This is simply extrapolated by what we see so it bears no more weight than our own observations. I would not doubt if the unit goes into a higher performance/higher resolution mode when connected, perhaps as a result of both increased power (the electrical kind) and improved cooling (might act as a big heat sink), but with today's XBOX ONE and PS4 development being made to run on faster and slower hardware (original and Pro/Scorpion) it wouldn't be unheard of to augment it further (extra GPU/CPU cores). Also, it does not contradict because those would still be the "main functions."
  • I just hope the graphics and gameplay are awesome. Also, it's been my dream to have a a Nintendo system where they have a normal controller similar to an xbox controller but with Nintendo games. I'm liking the home controller design but why does it always have to be weird Nintendo!!

Not that Ive felt it, but the pro controller looks really nice. It might be my favorite nintendo controller since the SNES.
  • Looks great! The only thing that really concerns me is the battery life. I hope the pro controller is at least as good as the Wii U pro controller.

I also hope we see some strong launch titles, but I'm not getting my hopes up. I love Mario and Zelda, but I'm hoping we'll at some point see a new F-Zero with solid online multiplayer and another Metroid game.
  • I like the fact the new pro controller has the xbox style analog stick placement. I like their current pro controller, but tgis one looks better.

Confirmed its a one screen system too, so no 2 screen display. Some instances where i liked it, but should be easier to make games for it now and miyamoto wont be trying to make 2 screen awkward games like starfox . Also hated the gyro setting on splatoon. Turned that off seconds after the tutorial.
