What would you trade for from your collection if offered?

Has anyone ever get tempted to trade something for your collection for a perticular item, especially non gaming? Everytime I see Little Samson go up in price, I wouldn't mind in trading it for a Gibson ES 335 even though its my most prized item.

Edit: If anyone has a Gibson 335 or Heritage 535 for trade for Little Samson and other NES games, let me know.

  • I wouldn't really be able to do this, since I am going for a full set. I think other full set collectors might agree, unable to split up a full set.

Now if someone wanted my whole collection, sure I'd trade it for something, maybe a house, lol.
  • If I didn't mind starting over, I think it'd be cool if I can trade my entire collection for a new house. lol
  • i would possibly trade my NIB Spanish 3-in-1 for a sticker sealed HOL coded Stack-Up

or a Spanish NIB Rodland even....
  • When I trade I like to be as fair as possible, and if the item up for trade is something I'm *really* after then I'd be willing to trade against myself. (E.g. my one of a kind StarFox Weekend collection for a loose Stadium Events....I now somewhat regret that trade but whatevs!)

That being said, if my collection is worth a dollar, or a million then I'd accept 85% cash value over eBay any day of the week. Otherwise, there's nothing in my personal collection that I'd be willing to let go of since it's all curated perfection to me now. I'd just wind up buying it all back up.
  • I find that not too many folks on this forum value trading as a means to collection growth anymore. I've had titles like Worms Armageddon (N64) available as a mint cart for trade for months with a want list that includes quite common games and haven't had a bite.

When I first joined here, I loved to "trade up" for harder-to-find items. Don't see much of that anymore. I'm not sure if people just prefer to spend big cash on stuff they want (and risk getting a fake) or just don't value a more complicated (but cheaper) path to games they want.

I can remember buying a few games at below their retail values and trading them for a nice piece multiple time. Sure, I have to acquire the games from my personal collection again, but I got a nice deal on a hard-to-find item!

So, to answer the original question... Pretty much EVERYTHING is available for trade and many things are available for sale (at the right price). The only things that are not, are games that I've had since childhood or games that have been given to me as a gift.
  • For non gaming? Man. I have to think on that...
  • I would trade for a house but with the size of my collection it would be a huge trade up for me. At least I could get a couple games each paycheck. Saving for a house requires waiting for that end result after a very long time.
  • a first car maybe, my collection isnt really big, and im 14
  • Straight cash, homie.

I'd then stash it in my bank account. Get that interest!
  • A house. I've already got a new car and we own our condo, so could rent out the condo and live in the house. (And this time I'd go cart only and finish fairly easily doing so).
  • I would trade my near complete nes collection for a NWC Gold and some extras.
  • I'd also take a car, but the car I want is like $62,000 (on clearance, mind you). I don't have a $62,000 collection.
  • If the offer was an insanely good offer well above the value of what I'm trading, I'd take it. As for what item would interest me enough? Can't think of anything non gaming related. So maybe my answer is no!

I'm loving trade-ups, in fact I'm in the middle of a trade up from a paperclip and it's been one of my favorite things to do on NA so far.

As for the original question, I still have a fraction of the collection most of you guys have so if its either a good deal and/or a game I've been wanting I'd go for it.

  • I have no idea. If I could cash out or trade around it's relative value (maybe a nice car?), I probably would though. I'm starting to develop a fear that something is going to happen to me and my wife is going to be burdened with a house full of video games that she'll either 1)never play and just keep or 2) sell for a fraction of its value. I couldn't even blame her either.
  • I'd strait up trade for a nice house.
  • This is an interesting topic. No, I wouldn't trade my collection for something non-video game related. If someone wanted to pay 100% retail, I might think about it. The only other way I would sell the collection is if there was a family emergency.

I agree with this as far as trades go.  I have been helping a local retro collector with mod work and in return I have been getting nes games for my work.  Not too long ago he called me and told me he met a guy who was giving away an MVS big red cab that was not working with 8 games.  Since he knows I fix stuff and had been nice/fair to him with trades/work he gave me the cab for free.  It's not working and needs minor work but I will take free anyday.

As far as what I would give away there are certain childhood stuff that is untoucable but most stuff in my collection I would be willing to trade because I know I can replace it.  I can't think of any non gaming related thing that I would want.
  • I have regreted pretty much every trade I've made. I try to do 1:1 value, but for some reason the stuff I trade away ends up skyrocketing in value, while the stiff I get ends up being reprinted and/or dropping in value. If I sell, I always get below market value, and then the thing increases in price. I think I'm cursed. So I just try to avoid trading/selling my stuff. Except that when I'm trying to buy a particular item, the price seems to steadily begin to rise as soon as I get my eye on it. And if I do take the plunge, I'm guaranteed to find it somewhere else in better condition for less money.
  • I've seen some armored Samus replica/cosplay suits go for the $1000-$1500 range. If I could get one of those for my two sealed Super Metroids, I'd probably do it. But I'd just be trading 2 neat Metroid items for 1 much cooler item.

I'll never get that kind of offer, though.
  • Ill trade my whole collection for a 2009 or newer Dodge 4x4 quad cab truck.
  • I'd trade my small collection for someone to teach me how to make a homebrew
  • Stuff costs money, games cost money, time, and effort. My collection has more sweat equity built into finding games than it's worth in barter value. Same reason I'll never sell a couple of my pinball machines, too many dozens of hours of my life put into the games that aren't reflected in their value.
  • I've always traded other items for games. Perhaps one day that will change.
  • I'd trade some of my games for a Phoenix Wright figma, but that's game-related... so maybe that wouldn't count.
  • Only in a family emergency would I sell my collection. Of all my possessions I cherish those games the most. Then again I really don't have anything of much value   (Other than a car and a house of course, but the stuff inside of it)

Care to elaborate on your paper clip trade up progress?  I've always thought it would be fun to try doing that.

I've gone from a paperclip to Pac Man for Atari, then to Vegas Stakes and NBA Jam TE both for SNES, and right now I'm trading just NBA Jam for a bundle of games with a few different things (keeping Vegas Stakes). It's in my signature if you want to check it out, and if you think it'd be fun then go for it

Oops, I had overlooked your sig...   Nice!

To avoid derailing the thread:  I think I would trade my CIB Donkey Kong Jr Math I've had since I was a kid for nice, working arcade cabinet (like a Galaga or something similar), but I don't know the prices on something like that.  The DK Jr Math CIB has sentimental value plus its actual value, so I'd need to make out pretty well on the trade to actually pull the trigger.

  • Definitely would, just depends on what it was. I like my collection but not that attached. Everything I have, I could easily get back.
