NES Pokemon Yellow (chinese pirate cart) Save issues

hey kids!

i bought a copy of pokemon yellow for the nes off aliexpress (the chinese pirate version of pokemon yellow)

im having trouble keeping my save file.  it saves sometimes and for a while at a time but never for long.

im going to swap out the battery incase thats the issue but i dont think it is given that it will keep a save for periods of time, just not consistantly.

i was wondering if anyone knew anyother reasons a game might lose a save other then the battery. maybe a ram memory chip issue?

anythoughts or experiences with this?

  • They're low quality shit, they don't save properly.

I see you're from Victoria, where did you buy this?
  • Cheapo china batteries can do that. Pop in a quality battery and you should be fine.
  • I got one of these a while back too (along with the NES version of FFVII) but haven't actually played it enough to know if it has the same problem. I do remember that it came with a piece of paper saying that I should hold the reset button while powering off the system to ensure a proper save. Give that a try. I would probably take Guntz's advice too. I'm probably going to change my batteries actually, now that he's mentioned it.

Hey, does yours say not to "STCAE" the game in extreme temperatures, on the back. Lol.
  • Matt- I bought it off a guy here in town. You're in Vic too I gather. Right on.

I realize they're low q, that was my fear.

Yes it certainly does say stce lol. Had to check, that's great.

My ff7 works fine, never a problem.

The reset/power isn't the issue, I've Tested it.
  • I bought a cart from ThisRoomIsAnIllusion back in March and I have a similar issue (no offense, I'm very happy with what I bought). As far as I can tell it's mostly because I'm rough with the cart, any little bit of pressure near the center of the cart bumps the battery and causes the memory to reset. IDK Power/Reset isn't a problem from having played it straight for a month.

I will have to try the battery replacement. I opened the cart and it's one of those repros that has a Famicom board glued onto a converter, so I'm not sure about the quality in that regard.

It's a great game BTW. Not perfect, but it's worth playing if you're a Pokemon fan for it's unique mechanics.
  • Yeah, I liked what i played of it. As far as I could tell, pokemon stats and growth seem fixed too, which is kind of nice. Don't have to think about invisible DV stats. Does anybody know if it uses the same Pokedex as the original Yellow? Or can you "catch'em all" in this version?

I'm pretty sure the game doesn't use the IV or EV system, just the base stats. It uses the same Dex as Yellow + the Legendary Beasts/Ho-oh/Lugia/Weather Trio (159 in total). You can catch them all in this version but the Weather Trio are only used in the Final Boss battle. You get Mew once you beat the Final Boss and complete the Dex bar the unobtainables.

I made a list of first impressions/changes I noticed while playing for the first time on another forum: https://smashboards.com/threads/pokemon-yellow-nes.432925/
