Nintendo Switch Collecting...

I for one am excited about this system, handheld gaming is not for me, but I like the idea of being able to play the games on my TV. There were many DS games that I loved, but hated playing on the small screen.

Anyone here planning on collecting from day one? Lets keep our fingers crossed that Gamestop keeps the cases for these games!

  • I'm considering it.
  • I dont really collect modern stuff, I buy the good games and play them. Once the system is retired, I move onto the next one.

Im so glad they're using carts again though, was never a big fan of discs.

The cases? It's usually the consumer that looses them when they trade them in, then GS just puts them into generic cases. lol

Looking on how this system has small carts, is cart based, and made for travel, original cases may be difficult to come by in the future.

  • Ill just buy the games Im interested in. For now Im happy with WiiU, so Im in no rush to pick up the Switch.
  • Collecting modern stuff isn't really for me. If it failed horrifically and turned out to have a fairly small set I'd consider it. But probably won't. I thought about collecting Xbox One and decided I don't care enough to go through with it. I just like how the spines are so uniform
  • Ill definately buy one the first two months its out. I have some gamecube , genesis, and dreamcast stuff to buy first. And I need to get a fund going for a HTF item or cash for a homebrew or repro id like made for a event id like to make happen.
  • I will because its a cart based home console. Thats my kind of thing. But it wont be right away, probably a few years in when the first run games end up in bargin bins

I'm kind of the same way, I don't try for full sets on newer sytems, but I enjoy getting a collection of the good games for systems. I have a ton of Wii U games I have my eye on picking up in the next year or so when the price bottoms out.

Your gamestops are different than the ones around me, Any DS games that come in get gutted and the carts get put into a little display case. I actually hit the dumpsters when im in the city and usually come out with a decent stack of cases and manuals. I'm hoping to make some covers for them so I can keep my Loose GBA games in them.
  • No... went way too hard on the Wii U with a full set. While I don't regret it, it's A LOT of work (some times it felt more like work than a fun hobby) to track all this stuff down for a reasonable price, keeping track of games, taking up space, and is still relatively expensive when going all out. Plus it taught me that I really don't like buying games I'm not gonna play. I did it this time as the library is small, but no way with the NX. I will still be buying certain games I like, but won't be buying anything that doesn't interest me. Also done with amiibos as well which I'm sure they'll continue to produce. This system will also be very accessory heavy which is another reason it doesn't personally interest me in terms of collecting.

I'm sure the games will still come with a digital manual in some cheap ass recycled plastic case. Long gone are the days of boxes and manuals. I still enjoy getting a nice CIB from NES/SNES/64 way more than any Wii U game.
  • not collecting for new systems EVER!

however, i will buy the Switch when it comes out,

    depending on launch titles...

and will simply be getting whatever i want to play.

also, because the cartridges seem to be small,

i'd imagine the actual game's cases to be 3DS size.
  • being a cartridge(or whatever they want to call it), I will probably keep an eye out for clearance bins down the road...

I maybe should have phrased this better, by collecting, I did not mean going full set. To me collecting means getting the games you want for the system. Holding onto the ones you really like.

I am also thinking that the cases will be similar to 3DS cases. I really like the Vita cases, and wouldnt mind seeing them in something similar to that.

  • Yes, I'll get one on launch day, and probably collect for it after that. I collect modern and retro games, but for modern games I never go for full sets, just the ones that appeal to me. That's why my Wii and WiiU sets sit around 40-50 titles each, because that's how many good titles I believe exist for each system.

....Says a lot that I think the Wii and WiiU have nearly the same number of great titles, when the Wii Library is something like 8x larger than the WiiU library. Nothing tops the Wii for shovelware.

Yeah, mine might be different. From what I can recall, GameStop has this thing called "Field Destroy" where they take out the games from the cases, destroy them, then toss it all away. The only other reason I'd think why they'd just throw out cases is to make room.

  • I went nuts on the Wii U, I'm close to a complete US set right now (for what's currently available, that is). I'd say it's likely I go nuts for the Switch as well, but maybe I'll be a bit smarter about it and wait for everything to drop. I got fanatical about the Wii U, I'll try to be more controlled with the Switch and wait for everything to be cheap before actively "collecting" for it.
  • I plan on getting one at launch. No plans right now of going for a full set but I do plan on picking up the good games and super cheap games if/when they get clearanced.

Of course that's how my Wii U collection started too, lol. Really tho I expect to get the good games and focus on some other systems for a while.
  • No. If the list of developers is any indication, there will be far too many titles to collect. At least right out of the gate. Maybe once stuff starting hitting the bargain bin.
  • Collect in the sense that i will buy ever game i can, no.

Collect in the sense that i am going to try and get day one with all the fun titles i can yes!
  • It will probably have too much garbage for me. I'm very excited for the high quality and first party titles, but looking at a shelf of Wii or DS games just looks sad with all the shovelware those got.

Im really hoping that with less gimicky stuff (motion) there will be less shovelware. It was just too easy to make a game people would buy because  of that gimmick. Theres always going to be some shovelware but i just hope it doesn't come close  to the wii
  • Yeah I will be after all the exclusives. For main stream AAA stuff i will stick with the ps4/ xbone

I'm not I'm still working on my GBA, PS1, PS2, PS3, GC, OG: Xbox, Wii, Snes, Nes and N64 backlogs so no need for a new system right now.

Yeah, I know ALOT of games I missed out on need to get played but you telling me isn't making them get played any faster! Sooooooooo many life sucking RPG's (T-T)...except for N64, no RPG's to be found on that hot mess!

I wish there was a site I could go to for recommendations where to start but nope, none whatsoever

FYI: I stopped gaming between 1997 to 2006 and again in 2009 to 2012. I started back for good in 2012.

Same here, My GC/Wii/Wii U shelves are full of awesome exclusives that I can not get on PC/Xbox. That is exactly what I meant by collect for it. Some people here seem to forget that you can collect for a system without going for a full set. lol

Yeah, when I asked a local manager why they throw out the DS cases he told me it is for space reasons, but they have room... It's annoying. One local store keeps the cases for the better games, and that is nice.

The field destroy thing is crappy... I wish I still had the pictures a local guy took of the dumpster behind our "Dump store" When the final word came down to clear out the NES/SNES/64/DC/Gen... games around 2004. This "Dump store" was the last store in the area to carry Retro, all the other stores had shipped them their games earlier that year and they had a crappy selection on the shelves. When word came down to clear the shelves, they field destroyed everything. A local guy took pics of the dumpster that night and it was full of destroyed games, and from the looks of it, they must have had boxes of games in the back. The shelves had nothing good on them the last few months, but the games visible on the top of the stack had never been on the shelves in the store. It was sick. I wanted to hunt the manager down and chew him out.

Gamestop is stopping the trend of dumpster diving by having everything they "Field Destroy" sent to HQ.

A good thing was fk'ed up all thanks to a certain "chief" in Texas bringing a f**king news crew to a location and bragging about it in the town's newspaper, I hope the subscriber spike was worth it prick! (Not you Sinnbox)

It wasn't always like this. Back in 2008-2012 they kept the cases and displayed them on the wall. We would make generic cases for any games that got traded without them. But when DS phased out they took aways its "wall space" and gave it a display case instead because it was cost effective. Each system gets allocated a set amount of wall space, bin space, or rack and it actually differs from store to store depending on the size.

In my day Wii, 360, PS3, and PS2 had the most wall space. They then axed PS2 and regular Xbox completely, and DS was reduced to the display case only with GBA games. While the other systems stayed the same, and the axing of the DS wall made room for the PS4/ONE/WII U.

It definitely is not cost effective to keep DS cases out there when they have multiple other systems that are way bigger money makers for them. And with all the action figures, tablets, and now even T shirt walls, they definitely do not have room in any gamestop i have seen.

Field destroy was always the dumbest thing ever. They didn't want to waste time or effort shipping this stuff or donating it, so managers had to destroy and penny out anything from guides to accessories to even games :/ Shit was asinine.

A fun fact for anyone who doesn't already know. Any of the marketing you see in store, we got to take home. And if you have a cool store, you can just ask them if you can have a poster, or a display, or even standees when the marketing cycle is up.

  • I'm thinking about it. If there are a crap ton of shovelware games like on Wii then no way. I'm 100% buying all the games I like. A full set is unlikely for me. Unless the full set ends up being super small. But yea I'm very excited for the Switch and plan to buy just about any game that piques my interest even the slightest.

    Off topic:

Youtube people think they're some major talent on Patreon: I AM CREATING CONTENT!!!!!!! I'm like: Dude, you're not Martin Scorsese over here making great movies. You're just an internet nerd pulling in $3,500 a month for doing nothing. That's why I only sub to the little channels doing it because they love it not because of the money.

Taking little donations here and there is ok but when you refuse to answer a simple question unless you get $10 or $20 first is BS. I'm looking at you, Billy!

    On topic:

I like how the switch looks and think it's great they're going back to cartridges and the fact we have an actual controller now. I might get one on Black Friday next year or the year after but like I said I still have backlog longer than the Statue of Liberty.
