Value of Retro video games dropping?

The growth in value of NES games on average has become stagnent over the past few months, while other retro games are slowing in its growth.

Blame the NES Classic?

Has the Retro world reached its peak?

Or should we calm down and play Bill & Ted's excellent adventure?

  • I think people need to relax. There are dull periods in any hobby. It doesn't automatically mean the market is crashing.
  • The bubble has burst!! Sell! Sell! Sell! But seriously its fine. Its just the slow time of year
  • Please let prices go back down to where they were in the mid-2000's.

    For two reasons:

    1. So I can get all my snes games back without paying an arm and leg.

    2. So I can laugh my butt off at the resellers and hoarders screwing this hobby up.
  • Hopefully, I'm dying to complete some of my sets without having to pay insane prices for a few titles.

    All of this.

Also, things don't seem to be slowing down to me. They may not be going up at the same rate, but if anything prices are leveling out.
  • I'm with ZeldaMaster64 on this ^-^ especially on point 2
  • Considering the thousands of dollars I spent on NES/SNES stuff this year, better not be dropping.
  • Hopefully it does because that means i can lick the tears off the faces of resellers
  • It hasn't hit its peak.

OP, if you're going to start a thread like this, instead of broad generalizations, how about you back it up with some actual specifics?
  • There is no valid reason to ever be playing Bill & Ted's excellent adventure

With the Nintendo Switch using cartridges again, I foresee retro games doing a nose dive straight into the ground. Mmmmmmwwwwahahahahahaha!!! Hahaha!!! HAHAHAHA!!!

Just think, I would then been able to get a copy of Earthbound and Chrono Trigger for $1.50 each

  • Panic? No, rejoice if it's true.

I wouldn't mind if my collection was worth a tenth of what it is now. It would give me a reason to go beyond Pre-Millenium Sony/Sega/Nintendo.
  • I could care less if prices drop. Im into retro gaming for the fun aspect of it and because I grew up on them., not to treat them like the stock market. Heck, maybe then I could afford that Aerofighters ive been looking for.
  • I really hate when people blame resellers for prices. It makes no sense.

Resellers can set prices whatever they want. It is the people who agree to purchase things at that price that dictate the price, not the resellers. Supply and demand.

WE are bringing the prices up. Us collectors. The more we desire these items and decide to keep paying more and more for them(Because they are worth it to us), the more they are going up. And the more people jump on the bandwagon and start collecting, the bigger this pool of buyers competing for the supply becomes. Thus raising prices.

Do resellers make collecting more challenging? Sure. But they are certainly not ruining the hobby like people seem to parade around here.

I have spent a lot for my collection and i have no regrets because the games are worth what i paid to me.

    This ^
  • I don't think we've seen the top peak in prices yet. However we have watched a few price jumps already. Things might slow down but, prices might drop, but they will never go as low as they were a decade ago. Chances are games will continue to go up, collectors/gamers just need time to catch up.

For example the number of collectors who can spend or are looking to buy a game for $1500 is a much smaller number then the number of collectors who can or are looking to spend $50 -$100. That's why many uncommon or underrated gems have been going up in value Bucky O'Hare, Metal Strom, Zen:IGN, Sword Master, etc.

What does the switch using cartridges have anything to do with the price of earthbound and chrono trigger lol ?

  • The comments in this thread are exactly why prices haven't dropped. Everyone would love to buy the games cheap. The only way they'd become cheap in the first place is if no one was interested. It's a catch 22 type of thinking...

Exactly. Supply and demand. That us collectors dictate.

Me hoping people will lose interest in retro games and buy new cartridge stuff. I don't know if you noticed but Hipsters are a big part of the problem with why prices are nuts now as well.

  • You know, I was wondering why there wasn't a bubble burst thread for a while. Thanks OP.
  • Hipsters have nothing to do with it. Good grief. This is reading like a Clinton email newsfeed now. Let's either talk with some sense or just talk shit. Might as well say it's illegal immigrants.

Resellers are the problem then hoarders and finally hipsters.... if you want proof of the hipster element watch a few videos of Metal Jesus Rocks.

I literally had a guy here on NintendoAge turn me down on selling my copy of Outrun on Genesis because he thought I wanted eBay prices... I was like damn! I only wanted $15 for it...for some reason it's going for $50

Clearly, you haven't dealt with any of these people.

  • Again, resellers aren't the problem. It's the buyers.

Every so often there has to be one.

I'm a buyer most of the time and I'm not about to shell out their asking price. Resellers are the ones popping up everywhere looking for gold.

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't we have a thread here a few weeks ago where some guys up north took a few tubs into a goodwill taking everything up for themselves sifting through all and only buying up the stuff they knew went for $20+? RESELLERS!!!

  • ?!?!? All ive seen is raising prices

You make alot of price trend threads like this OP.

You are either looking too much of a specific title or you are looking into too short of a window.

Sadly there is a lot of truth to this, but it would be nice if prices went down even if i took a loss on the items i have. I didn't buy them because they were expensive after all   . My two cents on resellers is that they don't make prices rise, but they do take away a lot of the great deals that could be left for people who actually want the games. Which makes the priceline more rigid in a way, and that kinda sucks imo.

SO apparently you are the only buyer and represent the entire hobby collectively. Cool.

There are TONS of people who WILL shell out the money. Just because you won't is irrelevant to the discussion.

Out of curiosity are these resellers holding the buyers at gun point to purchase their items?
