Nintendo Power

Since there are so many to choose what would be some of your top Nintendo Power magazine picks and why?  I have an entire collection I have not looked at in years and would like to pull out a few highlights for fun to read.  Any suggestions?

  • I personally find it best to just flip through each issue in sequence to get a feel for how the magazine changed as it went on as I'm sure it's all subjective. Some issues may also cover or highlight games that are more interesting to one individual that don't do much for another, or even a group of games in a single issue that might really flip your wig. Part of the fun of having things like this is to experience it all for oneself. Otherwise, why even bother?
  • First 50 for me, those are the years I care aboot. Beyond that, issues that feature games I care aboot.
  • The star tropics issue was a favorite of mine. Star tropics was one of my favs as a kid and that issue was the gateway to finishing it. Also in that issue (if memory serves me) there was the metal storm poster which piqued my interest in that game as a kid, that awsome mech robot was super cool. The next issue was the metal storm issue and I remember seeing the screen shots for the game and going out that weekend w my parents to consumers distributing (rip) and buying the game. It has maintained it's place as one of my top 10 personal favs ever since. Star tropics too for that matter, that ghost pirate level with the giant organ! Top 10 nes adventure game moments for sure.
  • Issue 26 has to be my all-time favorite. Desert Storm Gameboy, first-batch SNES giveaway, and Steve Wozniak's trick to getting his Tetris high score published (submitted his name backwards, Evets Kainzow). Also they went all-out with the Bill and Ted article, even though the game is absolutely awful, so that's neat.
  • Anything through the end of N64 imo, around the gamecube it started getting pretty dumb, during the wii era it got very ridiculous.

Every issue from that year was spectacular, as a kid.

Pretty much all downhill from there

(though the gold cover issue for Link's Awakening was awesome, as well -- and the comic run for LttP and Super Metroid were great)

The format change when N64 came out killed it for me, personally.

I understand. I preferred the N64 format because that's when I started reading it. I got my first issue right before the holidays in 1996, and subscribed all the way through 2006. I only went back and got old pre-N64 issues recently, so the format never bothered me but everything from NES through N64 is easily the best for me.

Yeah, I was kind of "aging out" of Nintendo Power anyway, at that time, since it was always geared more toward elementary/middle-school aged readers, IMO.

But seriously, the old format was clean and concise, and everything was easy to read (in terms of visual aesthetic).

The N64 "update" just looked sloppy as hell, and simple things like the table of contents were like being poked in the eye with a sharp stick.

They took "90's 'tude" WAY too far...

  • The one with Star Fox 2 in it.

Also any that include 64DD stuff.
