How many people here have completed sets?

  • i've got a complete Virtual Boy set (cart only), which is kind of a cop-out.

to be honest, i'm not really a full set kind of collector. i've got about 170 NES games without much desire for more. i'm sure i'll continue to pick up more games as the years go on, but i've got most of what i could possibly want. i don't especially want to buy a bunch of sports games that i'll never play, so i just keep the full set ideas out of my head.
  • I have a few complete sets, and a few more I want to finish...Looking at you Wii and Wiiu.

I will probably finish up my Game Gear and Vita sets at some point too.
  • Sort of... but not yet.

Making huge progress on my Amiibo stuff. Up to 78 Amiibo now. Don't know if I'm going for the complete set or not, because I really don't want to get the Animal Crossing ones.

I would love to have a complete 3DS collection. That's the one I'm going to be working on after Amiibo is wrapped up.

Also have been buying a fair amount of PSP, and recently surpassed 100 PS2 games.

Really only going for the three systems, to be honest.
  • I've got a full Vita set to date, very close to a full Dreamcast set as well.

How tough is dreamcast?  Biggest hurdle?

I've been thinking about going for it, or at least getting more into it. I love the games I have.

Sets: Nes cib minus se box, unlicensed missing a few boxes

Virtual boy, need box for jack bros and water world, everything else done

    Nintendo power, done

Nearly done ps1 longbox, nes hint guides

Closing in on ps1 main, ps2, wii, egm, gamepro, psp

2/3rds on ds, genesis, gameboy (cart only), ps2 guides, ps1 guides

Over half on vita, 3ds, ps3

Near halfway saturn, dreamcast, gbc, sega cd

Only ones i intend to complete to 100% are ps1, wii, psp and ds. Wii and ds are extremely challenging due to rare shovelware. My goals are stretched out.long right now.

Full PS1? Damm dude good luck with that. That is going to be a challenge. Fortunately even the most expensive games are still reasonable compared to other systems.

I am amazed at how many good/worthwhile games are on the PS1 that just flew under radar. Some games i never even heard of. Like Vanark. Awesome game.

    Or The unholy War.

Dreamcast isn't too bad at all IMO. There aren't too many heavy hitters. I haven't checked prices much lately, but Cannon Spike was priciest for a while.

I started out with the intention of cart/box/manual only but have started to lean towards wanting game-specific posters too. I'm very aware it's a slippery slope and will add to the cost(!) and time tremendously. The paper for many SNES games is actually 100x pricier (and harder to find) then the games themselves! Why spend 700$+ on a Aero Fighters poster when I could spend that instead on upgrading my PC, or a new street bike, clothes or shoes, etc. It's a tough pill to swallow. I love the hobby but at some point the price DOES become prohibitive. (It also doesn't help that there are many douchey guys who have been cornering the SNES market for the past few years, nor does it being a "hot system to collect for!" help either).

Having said that I'm fairly serious about completing the set in some capacity sometime this coming year (as many of the games I'm missing aren't outrageously pricey) so have been actively saving check after check looking mainly to dump it on a MBR/SR. After that the other stuff falls into the sub-1k category, and since I have a decent job and no kids and no debt to speak of....... should be achievable in a year's time.

I have waffled though several times on even bothering with the paper at all. I **could** just sell all the boxes/manuals/posters I DO have and finish the set cart only, which has become much more appealing over time............. the carts DO look cool on a shelf when sitting on their sides, no doubt. Plus hunting in the wild would be fun again as any game I needed I could buy and immediately add to the collection..... Not to mention if I did want to box them in some way, UGC's + a printer solve that problem adequately...... decisions, decisions.

The only other "set" I'm planning on going for would be all the good system exclusive Gameboy Advance games. I have no nostalgia for it as a system, but I find many of the games are rather enjoyable and the boxes display nice when on a shelf.

  • Got a complete licensed NES set currently. Just a few games shy of unlicensed too.

4 games short of TG16. 4 short for Virtual Boy. 90% done with Dreamcast. 80% done with SNES. Over that halfway hump on PS2 currently. Everyone of those has the most challenging titles already knocked off so it's just slowly picking away at titles as the opportunity arrives

yeah all I hear about UGC is they are crap. When I found out they don't have a slot for manuals that was the deal breaker, some manuals don't even fit. Custom game cases looks like a definite step up

    Sonic limited edition

    Giga wing 2

    Mars Matrix

    Cannon Spike

After these 4, just about everything else hovers between the $20 to $50 range besides a few outliers.

  • Complete:

SNES (not counting MBR/SR, Comp carts)

    Jaguar (cart)

    SuperGrafx

    N64

    Close:

    TG16 Hu (missing 1)

    TG16 CD (missing 3)

    Jaguar CD (missing 1)

    NES licensed (missing 2)

    NES unlicensed (missing 9~ish)

    3DO CILB (games only, @ 102/140)

    Original Gameboy (@ 363/510)
  • I completed the CIB Virtual Boy set around 2012 and since then I'm working on the N64 set. During those years I also started to work on the Vita set.

Now I'm 8 games away from the N64 set. I plan on finishing it next month. After I finish it I will go back to the Vita set but I also want to get a few games for the collection in general.
  • 2 years ago is when I decided to collate a set. My most sentimental systems are NES, N64, and PSP. I decided to collect N64 cart-only aggressively while picking up NES whenever I saw a deal. I am going NTSC liscensed on both. I find SE as more of a variant so that cart will not be included in my maybe someday NES set. I have all N64 $40+ games except BFD(due to non-rarity). I have 230 N64 carts and 250 mostly filler NES carts. I am, however, selling some sports memorabilia and autographs to buy $1000ish in NES bigs...
  • The fun thing as others have mentioned and alluded to is a "set" is really what you yourself define it as.

While there maybe x amount of games released for systems here in the states, most of the retro systems had region exclusives that never made it here, adding a ton of other stuff to look out for and collect. And the doubly fun and cool thing is most of the games don't require you to be fluent in Japanese or another language to effectively play, especially if they're non-rpg type games like fighters, shooters or platformers. Famicom, Super Famicom and the earlier Sega consoles all fall into this category splendidly.

absolutely. Everyone should collect what they want to collect, you decide what you want and when you're done. Don't let other people decide for you
  • I had thought about going for a complete N64 or Dreamcast set, but like others have mentioned on here, I don't want to collect all the garbage that I know I would never play.
  • I don't have a complete set, but I am working on a few.

    1. N64

-The N64 was my first system, and I absolutely loved it. It's a nostalgia thing, to enjoy the games I had and experience the ones I didn't get too. Plan is to dedicate some time to every game.

    2. xBox

-The xBox was the console I wanted as a kid, but never really got. The wonderful part is, $10 is still enough to bring home a bag of games. It's cheap, and fun to collect for. I'm about half-way done and I have a few heavy hitters out of the way. Much like the N64 set, the plan is to dedicate some time to each game, although that will take a while.

    Honorable Mentions:

    1. NES

-I feel like most collectors *try* for a complete NES set. It's the most iconic machine in home video gaming. While I have no intention of dropping bills on Stadium Events, NWC, or Samson, it's something I will add games for if I don't already have them.

    2. DSi

-This set intrigues me. It's a whopping total of 5 games (3 NTSC releases, 2 PAL releases). It gets passed over a lot. While the games aren't something I'd be interested in playing, I'd love to have this set just for the novelty. I have no current intentions of putting this set together (will happen at a later time once my game collection has been re-organized).

    56.12% of carts aka 417/743

    62.31% of manuals aka 463/743

    74.70% of boxes aka 555/743

It's going okay been at it since 1996. I have most of the expensive stuff but there's a few deadly ones left to go. One day I might finish it haha. Trying to fill my empty boxes atm. My set is bigger than the standard because I buy a bunch of Cib repos.

  • Since I have money tied to other things, I don't actively collect as much as I used to, but I'm around 400+ NES games at the moment. Took me like 15 years or so, so I'm just picking up stuff here and there and slowly getting it built.
  • I would probably have a NES, SNES, or 64 set by now but the problem is, I go for all 3 at the same time. I slightly wish i focused on NES from the get-go but I'm happy with my collection. I have a good chunk for all 3 systems with NES being a bit over half way to a North American set.
  • Have a complete Atari 7800 set with variants.

That's the only one I care about completing. Figured with that being the first console I had as a kid that I might as well since I already had probably half of the games.
