In regards to SNES, I know nothing of all these laws and how long they last for but my thoughts on a SNES P&P are:
No trademark has been submitted so they are NOT doing one?
No trademark submitted because it's still under a trademark, they don't need to?
No plans whatsoever
and then finally, who knows if the 2015 TM had anything to do with the classic? (I assume it did)
As for OP, I think the demand for original versions of a few of them games may go up in the short term... I don't see any lasting effect but really who knows.
Everyone here seems to assume that they would go right to an og NES when more likely they would pickup a multi clone system for cheaper/roughly equal price to og such as retron 2 or 3 (not so much 5 as i think thats a bit too expensive on its own for these theoretical people). Doing this would probably alleviate the worry of getting something that doesnt work since they are buying a brand new product. So i would bet IF it increases demand it would be on the games themselves not so much the console
I've sold more original NES systems in the past several days than I have in the past several months (refurbed with power, av, one controller for $65). The hype and elusiveness of the NES classic is fueling people to purchase og retro consoles and games. I can only imagine holiday season is going to amplify the demand. I like it!
Duck Tales and Rescue Rangers would cost too much, Disney would want a cut
Same with any other movie or TV license. Too many hands in the cookie jar. Nintendo wants either first party titles, or third party titles that come with no baggage. As much as I'd love to see other people experience the greatness that is NES Batman, it's just not going to happen.
Another wrinkle: Does Sunsoft even exist anymore?
apparently they released a 3DS game in 2014 called Shanghai 3D. I'm not finding any info to suggest they aren't around anymore but who knows. I feel like Blaster Master would've been a good one to have, no baggage there. I guess they could do minor rom hacks to games like batman or ducktales to just remove the characters (similar to punch out) but that would take work, also I have no idea what the deal with copyright is, does disney partially own the game too or is it just a matter of their characters are in it and thats it?
Their Twitter was advertising a game of theirs that was on the Famicon Classic Edition, and it looks like they are alive and well, pumping out "Love Simulation" games on iPhones.
Once Nintendo has a better handle on how many of these they can expect to sell, it's entirely possible we could see Duck Tales, Tetris, or other games that would significantly increase this unit's appeal added to a later version. It's not out of the question. For this version, they clearly went with games that present zero licensing hurdles whatsoever, but if this does really well, the cost-benefit analysis changes.
I'm wondering if they should release a version of this system that hooks to Virtual Console, and takes 3DS style cards. I mentioned this afew weeks ago, but got poopood by several members saying it will not work... but then the next week SEGA revealed the new Genesis that runs on a SD format. I hope SEGA brings their new Genesis to the USA, but would love it if Nintendo released a NES Classic that took a SD format.
Just for reference sake, as one indicator. The number of members is : Users: 27647 Total
See if there's a spike here. But really, that number steadily increases anyways.... so demand seems to be increasing, this will probably help add a little fuel to the fire.
With the advent of "Facebook collecting groups" I could see even a major spike in popularity of NES collecting not having a major effect on NintendoAge membership. Its when you get to the hardcore levels of having to collect boxes or PAL games or whatever obscure crap, that you need to join us older hardcore folk.
That said, if even 0.1% of buyers of the Nintendo Mini decide to start hardcore fullset collecting, and they sell 10 million units, that is 10,000 new collectors to contend with. Granted, who knows what the actual numbers will be.

Yeah, definitely good points. Tough to tell, really.
Interestingly enough I've seen a little more buzz around the local pawn shops in town over the last few weeks. One older guy (50) was at games counter the other day with his whole family looking for 'every game he didn't have' and comparing the prices to eBay on the spot. It was really strange as it seemed to be a family affair and he also didn't really seem to know what the hell he was doing.
Another guy in EB Games the other day asked the employee if they sold/traded retro games as he said they were hard to find. He specifically said that he wanted to grab some games that weren't on the NES Classic. So it looks like it sparked his interest to get other games besides the ones built in.
I have a feeling a lot of this will be a fad though. The casuals will grab the system for Xmas and then move on when something else comes along next year. There might be a little influx, but I doubt it'll be more than what people are saying here - an influx of people buying stock systems with a few games and then forgetting about it around the same time the plug and play gets old.

Did they have anything to do with the PS2 (and XBOX?) "Spy Hunter" game?

I didnt say they were any good. But people who might start to get interested in the hobby by the mini would probably prefer to buy a brand new console rather rhan an old one that may have issues. Its basic human nature

I was at a local store this week, and people had bought them out of NES systems, and they got several calls from people while I was there looking for NES systems because they could not find a NES Classic Edition. I was laughing/pissed off at one of the newer employees, he was talking to a customer that was looking at buying a Wii U, and was telling him all about rare games, and giving the guy terrible information and lies. He told him that Nintendo is almost bankrupt becuause the Wii U was a failure, and the NES classic is their way of getting out of that bankrupcy, but Nintendo ran out and will not have any for Black Friday. It is becuase of the Wii U failure, and NES Classic demand that retro games have suddenly jumped in price, and that if he buys a gamecube the price will only go up. He also said that Nintendo will be releasing the switch if they have enough money, and almost anything he buys on a Nintendo system will probably be compatible with the switch. The guy bought a Gamecube, and afew of the pricier titles. The employee told him that buying Luigi's mansion is a good investment because it will only go up because Nintendo has forgotten about Luigi, and people will buy it because it is the only game that they will ever make with Luigi as a playable charachter. I'd go more into detail, but I have started ranting, and do not want to be that guy.

I'm surprised not to see Bomberman, Adventure Island, Rad Racer, Dragon Warrior or hell even Lolo. Then again these titles had more of a mass appeal. I can imagine this bringing interest in the hobby as more and more websites report on the NES Classic and what they assume is the state of retro collecting. Should it cause a spike expect to see more new members coming to the forum complaining about prices and those damn dirty resellers!!!

2013 was the year of Luigi lol. Yeah, these are the funniest people in my opinion. The ones that think they know it all and love flapping their lips spewing out garbage like this. The guy buying all the GC stuff probably didn't know any better and now believes everything this dude said.
But... what about the ripple effect? Anyone think any new finds will happen and there will be some game lots discovered?
I mean, I'm not talking about warehouses or anything here... but there's got to be some hidden stashes somewhere.
The more people out looking, or even looking in their own parents' basements maybe this will help get some more rare games onto the market. Whether they hold their value or not is a different story, and one of demand/supply. It's impossible to tell how it would affect prices given all the unknowns.

I talked to a Best Buy employee yesterday (or maybe the day before). He saw me looking at the empty hanger tag for an NES Classic Edition controller. I was getting the SKU.
Their web site had no accessible product page for it.
Calling the store to check availability, their phone system prompts me to enter a SKU.
The phone system says the SKU is invalid.
STUPID. If they want to head-off calls for availability occupying the time of their employees, they need to keep the SKU active on their web site and in their retail system.
Anyway, the guy asks and I mention they're going to keep getting calls from people asking about availability if they don't fix it to at least say "out of stock" when people inquire.
He starts talking about NES Classic Edition and says the store only got about 12 of them, and it's all they'll ever get because Nintendo won't produce any more, ...ever.
I had to tell him that's simply not true. It's absolutely HUGE both in the US and in Japan. The Wii U is dead and the Switch doesn't launch until March next year (Switch has somewhat limited prospects for success, in my opinion). Nintendo needs to sell AS MANY OF THESE AS THEY POSSIBLY CAN this holiday season. I told him I expect massive quantities this Black Friday, probably with an extra bundled controller.
I sure hope he hasn't gone around telling other people that Nintendo has stopped production. Someone here mentioned a GameStop employee said something similar. These people are getting it mixed up with Wii U.

That was me that mentioned the GS employee saying that the NES Classic was only being produced until the end of the year. He's actually a pretty knowledgeable guy, and if the info is bad, i blame his regional guy that heard if from corporate.
As to your comment about Nintendo NEEDING to sell as many of these as possible, I'm not sure if there is enough profit in these for Nintendo to need to sell them, I would think that between the retail markup, shipping, and production that Nintendo probably makes $1-$2 per console, but even if they sell afew million, that really is nothing compared to what they have in the bank. My guess is that this is some sort of a marketing strategy to get Nintendo back into a household name. People go pick one of these up, get excited about Nintendo again, then buy the Switch. Putting the NES classic between the Wii U and Switch really helps cleanse people's minds about Nintendo. People go from remembering that Nintendo's last console was not recieved well, to remembering all the of the good times they had on the NES back in the day.
If Nintendo really wanted to make serious profit, they should have added a SD based cart slot. Then released booster packs of games, they would have very little cost in production or shipping on something like that. Imagine if the base console came with SMB, Metroid, Zelda, and Tecmo Bowl. People still would have bought it, then they could release packs such as SMB2/3 on 1 cart for $15-$20. Metroid, Zelda II, Startropics on a cart, TMNT I, II, III on a cart, so on. Or just have it hookup to a Virtual console that people could download games from, with the promise of that Virtual console also being on the Switch.

I was thinking the same thing, this is making people exited for Nintendo, I'm sure many people will be digging in their storage areas for games and systems they had as kids because the games they want are not on the NES Classic. Many will endup trading those games in, or listing on Craigslist once they get bored of them.

Yup, It's really crazy, the store is full of them now. I'm not sure if it is the Christmas rush hires, or what, but it's really annoying. It's funny, the new guys consider themselves experts, but can not tell the difference between a Boxed SNES/NES game, and a Genesis game. I caught the guy stocking CIB games in the Genesis rack, he got offended when I asked why he was putting Nintendo stuff in with the SEGA games.

5389100. This is what comes up as the SKU for it.
That's not the controller. I took a picture of the tag on the hanger before he removed it (and broke it in doing so).

2013 was the year of Luigi lol. Yeah, these are the funniest people in my opinion. The ones that think they know it all and love flapping their lips spewing out garbage like this. The guy buying all the GC stuff probably didn't know any better and now believes everything this dude said.
5389100. This is what comes up as the SKU for it.
That's not the controller. I took a picture of the tag on the hanger before he removed it (and broke it in doing so).

Maybe for the short future it may slightly but not in the long run in my opinion. Personally I am not interested in the classic edition in the slightest bit. I think it's a fun idea but that's about it, just have no interest in it.

wonder if they will have a SNES version of the NES classic .... but who knows, its to early to say ( imo ) at what will happen to the going price(s) ...
So last year Nintendo submitted a trademark for the NES controller: http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2015/04/nintendo_submits_trademark_for_nes_controller

Um. My first time playing on a clone:

Did they have anything to do with the PS2 (and XBOX?) "Spy Hunter" game?
[edit]
It looks like Sunsoft was not involved in that.

I didnt say they were any good. But people who might start to get interested in the hobby by the mini would probably prefer to buy a brand new console rather rhan an old one that may have issues. Its basic human nature

2013 was the year of Luigi lol. Yeah, these are the funniest people in my opinion. The ones that think they know it all and love flapping their lips spewing out garbage like this. The guy buying all the GC stuff probably didn't know any better and now believes everything this dude said.
5389100. This is what comes up as the SKU for it.
That's not the controller. I took a picture of the tag on the hanger before he removed it (and broke it in doing so).
Controller SKU is: 5579396
Can only find this by searching Google for that SKU:

I was at a local store this week, and people had bought them out of NES systems, and they got several calls from people while I was there looking for NES systems because they could not find a NES Classic Edition. I was laughing/pissed off at one of the newer employees, he was talking to a customer that was looking at buying a Wii U, and was telling him all about rare games, and giving the guy terrible information and lies. He told him that Nintendo is almost bankrupt becuause the Wii U was a failure, and the NES classic is their way of getting out of that bankrupcy, but Nintendo ran out and will not have any for Black Friday.
