Variant guys... what's the difference in Rad Racer CIBs?

So I did a search and couldn't find anything relevant to this topic.  As I'm sure many people know, there's two versions of the Rad Racer manual, one gray with green letters and one black with blue letters.  Of course this makes no sense since the game was never released as a black box title, but go figure.  What's the difference between the two CIBs?  Is it anything noticeable like a seal variant or is it just something boring like a Rev-A / non-Rev-A difference?  Just curious....

  • I've always wondered about this as well, any insight?
  • I think we had this discussion before...

I believe that the Gray manual comes with the Circular black seal and the black one comes with the oval white seal.
  • I would assume so, as Metroid and Kid Icarus never got black manuals and started out with grey
  • yeah the black manual just doesn't make sense.
  • I'm pretty sure this was the "transition" game from black box to grey box. I'm just going with logic on this one.

I'm pretty sure there was also two different glasses (help me out with this one).
  • Sounds like we need to open up some sealed Rad Racers... image
  • Opening up a 1/2 black box version might be costly, though.

I agree with your logic.  As for the different glasses, I don't know anything about that.  Could it be that you're thinking about the other 3-D game glasses (i.e. Orb 3-D)?

Which seal is present on the insides of both front covers?  That might help answer the question.  I know that this has been brought up a few times before, so you could also try and search for the answer on here, DP, NESWorld, etc.
  • Ok finally home to address this.
    1) Black Manual goes with original 5-screw first release Rad Racer. It has a Gold Circle Seal inside.      Zip Code on back cover of 98052.

    2) Silver Manual with NO CODE and Gold Circle seal inside goes with all matching carts.  Zip Code on back cover of 98052.

    3) Silver Manual WITH CODE and GOLD CIRCLE Seal inside goes with all matching carts.  Zip Code on back cover of 98052.
    4) Silver Manual WITH CODE and WHITE OVAL Seal inside goes will all matching carts.  Zip Code on back cover of 98052

    5) Silver Manual WITH CODE and WHITE OVAL Seal inside with address on back cover CHANGING to Zip code of 98073-0957
Plain and simple as far as I'm concerned!

So basically I have 5 manuals starting in order from the top to the bottom in order of release progression.  Hope this helps!

  • A much more interesting Question to me is:

1)I have a Rad Racer box with a * in the code anyone have a manual with * code?

2)I have a Rad Racer cart with -USA-1 code, anyone have a manual or box with -1 in the code?
  • i thought the * and -1,-2, etc on items didn't always come on all of the things (like, some of the boxes were revised, but not the manual. or whatever). i just seem to remember something about that.
  • erik, i know i have many different carts/manuals/boxes for this one, but im not home to check for ya. i was always pissed that there was no hangtab box for this one. its out there somewhere!!! image
  • Dear Hootie....

What are you talking about I have 3 DIFFERENT hang tab CIB's for Rad Racer... Too bad they are

    1) Canadian Version

    2) Asian Version

    3) United Kingdom (-UKV) Version

If I have all 3 of these you'd sure think there was a USA one out there somewhere!  I'll keep looking!  image

  • Sorry to dredge up an old thread...is there a way to tell from just the box (it's a sealed copy) if I have the first release of Rad Racer? It's got the black/gold seal on the box.
  • anyone? braveheart?
  • Not unless you can find the so far unseen hang tab box. There are 3 different versions with the gold seal before it switched to the white seal. Now obviously the THOUGHT of first release to this point (since no hang-tab box has been found) would be the gold seal non-REV-A box. But that couldn't be 100% confirmed unless one was opened and it had the 5-screw cart and black manual.
  • Cool, thanks for the info. I guess I should be pretty happy as I have the gold seal non-REV-A copy factory sealed. Anyone want to open it for me? image
  • Does anyone have a 3-screw cart, Black Seal, with NO Code on the cart?

Also I just found a black seal box that has the innner code on only the left flap and not the right inner flap? LOL probably factory screw up but still interesting.
  • Oh and I finally figured out what the -1 coded cart I have is. The tiny little "TM" under the white NES seal of quality was changed to an "R". However the White seal box and the White Seal box with the * in the box code both have "TM" under the box SOQ. So it's possible there is a white seal box out there with an "R" under the SOQ to match this cart.

Also the manual I listed above as last in the progression with the changed zip code of 98073-0957 matches the changed address on the white seal box with the * in the box code. SO you can match those up for sure.
