Finally played Shovel Knight

I didn't own a current gen console when this came out so I am very late to the party. I could have downloaded it on my ps3 but I tend to avoid buying games digitally. Recently picked up a physical copy for ps4 after buying a ps4 pro and I was instantly hooked. This game is absolutely brilliant and I had a tough time putting it down. The graphics, music, and level disign are all beautifully done. Its amazing how modern the game feels while staying faithful to the 8-bit style. Very refreshing experience and after only 1 playthrough, it is easily in my top 10 favorite games of all time.

  • Yes this game was brilliant, gave me a Mega Man vibe but had some minor RPG elements too. I'd agree, must play and easily 9 out of 10.
  • Yes, Shovel Knight was my personal GOTY 2014 across all platforms. I am honestly praying to baby Jesus himself that Yacht Club makes a sequel.
  • Love Shovel Knight. It's really fun on two player co-op mode...mind you I have the WiiU version
  • It's about time man! Glad you enjoyed. Unlike most breakout popular indie games, this one lived up to the hype.
  • I need to get this when I get a new gen console. I have a 3ds, but not a big fan of handheld games. Every video I watch and review I see just makes me want it more though
  • Shovel Knight was great, but Plague Knight was unbelievably fantastical.
  • Better late than never, I still rant and rave about it.
  • My first experience with Shovel Knight was pretty 'meh'. I put it down for a long time. Then I bought Mighty Number No. 9 and hated my life while playing through that. Decided I would slog through Shovel Knight to get it over with, too... and it blew me away in comparison. I've picked it up a few times since then and had fun with it.
  • I thought it was alright. Maybe it's more impressive to people who haven't played an NES game in years but... I'm still playing them now. Well I guess that's everyone in this forum too.

Interesting... I don't think I played the game after beating it, but now I should bust it out

  • Gonna have to start the 2nd playthrough soon to see how that turns out
  • Definitely on my Steam Wishlist to pick up one of these days...
  • Shovel Knight alone was pretty satisfying. Plague of Shadows has more of a learning curve.. you can jump and launch yourself and double jump and float around in crazy ways. Fortunately the controls are spot-on once you figure out how to harness the power. Not all of his modular bombs are particularly useful, but it's fun to experiment your way past a tough enemy or situation with different fuses and explosive effects. Plus he has that sweet beak. I think I ended up liking Plague Knight even more.

Yacht Club did a brilliant job on this game, and we still have two more free new characters in the pipeline. I admire their dedication. If there was any justice in this world, they would be making Call of Duty money.
  • I am actually in the middle of this game right now. Got it last Christmas and only recently popped it in. Enjoying it thoroughly, just need to find time to play more
  • 100% agree. This is the type of game where you want to spend the $15-20 and give the game to someone who has never played it before.

Supercoupe91, have you played the plague of shadows campaign? That is also very very fun! And I believe the spectre knight campaign comes out in spring 2017. Did I mention all that extra content is totally free?!?! I really hope they do a 2nd shovel knight down the road.
  • I find it hilarious that the Troupple King gets upset if you try to fish in his pond.
  • It's a phenomenal game. I loved it.

No I haven't. I look forward to it though. My only regret is buying the game used. Should've supported the creators.

You could always buy a shovel knight amiibo, or azure striker gunvolt 2, which is published by yacht club games. Not sure if they made that game or are just publishing it though. Pretty sure they're just the publisher.

  • Great Game. I played it on 3DS first and then bought the physical vita version. It's the best platformer I've played in a while...
  • Fantastic. PlayasGuide gave it 5 stars.
  • Love it. Found Plague a little difficult to control :/
  • Love this game. Easily one of my favorites on the 3DS.

It is at first, which is part of the challenge. If you're having difficulty with the controls like I did at first, here's the setup I recommend that gives you the most time to react and make adjustments when you're jumping or falling, and thus the best chance at survival.

Arcana - Vat (this creates a platform beneath you that you can use to jump off of.)

Burst - Float Burst (this allows you to fall slowly to the ground. Also, hold down Y until you're glowing. Then jump twice with B before letting go of Y. This will give you 3 jumps instead of 2.)

    Other tips:

-Your bomb casing doesn't matter. Each casing gives you a very slight boost in the air every time you throw a bomb. Also, try lobbing the bombs as you fall. That'll help slow your fall.

-Your powder and fuse don't matter for determining how slowly you fall. You can still "throw" 3 bombs even if you have a powder that only allows 1 or 2 bombs.

I hope that helps! Plague of shadows is definitely worth playing. It is a little more difficult than shovel knight because the controls are a big trickier at first which makes some stages more challenging, but don't let the trickiness stop you from playing through as Plague Knight.

Awesome, thanks. Will re-take it once I'm done with the never ending Dragon Quest VII (70+ hours and still missing 6-7 islands).

  • Brilliant game. Need to replay at some point. New DLC on its way.
  • Simply attacking an enemy right in front of you seems complicated at first with Plague Knight. He's not really built for that.. the ideal attacking position with the regular bombs is jumping above your enemy at a 45 degree angle. The short fuse-float bombs or boomerang ones do a pretty good job attacking forwards, or eventually you can just use the melee staff.

And never double jump and release a charged burst. Jump once, release the charge and hold it again, then jump in the air to control your momentum. After that you can release the second burst in the air to quadruple jump. Jump, burst, jump, burst, you hardly have to even touch the ground. I sometimes used the vats as stepping stones or emergency lifeline but I never liked the float ability.
  • Played through it and beat the first quest over the last couple of days. GREAT game!

Only managed 91% on my first play through, despite being thorough.

No telling where the songs I missed were located...

How are you pulling off a quad jump? I tried doing what you said but it won't let me charge again while I'm in the air.

As for attacking, you're always jumping anyways, so you're typically above enemies. That's when the Bounce casing bombs are handy. The lob casing bombs are useful for when you're climbing ladders and moving vertically. Every other bomb casing is pretty pointless. They're not nearly as effective.

The staff of striking (the melee staff) is decent for close combat enemies in front of you but your magic runs out VERY quickly, so this is a pretty useless weapon.

The vat is good because you can constantly stay in the air for an entire boss battle with it. Just jump twice, then use your charge burst and keep throwing bombs. Then use your vat once, and repeat what you just did by jumping, charging, and throwing. Your magic meter will fill back up and you'll be able to stay in the air the whole time and easily defeat the boss. If you're not in a boss battle, the vat can come in handy as an emergency platform when you make a mistake. It has saved my butt many times.

  • Were you trying it with the Float burst? I just remembered it doesn't work with that one, which is why I always stayed with the Basic burst.
