Have you gotten any of your friends into collecting?

Initially, my friend Mike had little interest in Nintendo. He owned one growing up and had fond memories of Mario and Duck Hunt, but like most people in the year 2009 had let go of his system of yesteryear (physically and sentimentally) and had no urge to re-play it.

Through hanging out with me and watching my collection develop over the past few years, an interest was sparked. He began asking a lot of questions and wanting to actually play the games. Eventually he decided he wanted his own and I sold him the classic starter set - New 72 Pin Toaster, 2 Controllers, Hook ups, Gun, Mario/Duck Hunt for 20$. A week or so later, I received a bunch of doubles and I offloaded Battletoads, Zelda, Mario 3, Mega Man 1, Superspike VBall, Super Dodge Ball, Gradius, Double Dragon 2, Lolo and Ninja Gaiden 2 for 30$. 50 dollars in, with a nice little collection and he couldn't have been happier.

Ever since, his enthusiasm for the hobby has only increased. He now has a sizeable collection of 170 carts and 50 boxes. For somebody who thought they'd never again draw enjoyment out of the 24 year old grey box....well, enough said.

  • I've didn't manage to make some of my friends some collectors, but one became interested in retro gaming.
  • No. I had a friend that collected, but he had to give it up due to financial reasons. I have a couple of friends that are willing to play retro games, but they will only play for a short time.
  • I guess we're a unique breed. Most of my friends think I'm a bit nuts.
