New to NES Collecting, hoping to learn and meet local collectors
Hey there NA! I've been lurking around here for the last few weeks and finally decided to make an account and start participating. Here's a probably-too-long blurb about what brought me here:
Some of my earliest gaming memories came from the NES that my grandparents owned. Hours and hours of SMB, Duck Hunt, Tom & Jerry, and Karnov with my cousins. We never did beat Karnov, and I still love/hate that fire-breathing Russian dude to this day.
Jump forward 20-something years, and for some reason I decide to dust off an old garage-sale-NES and fire it up again. I have a blast playing through SMB again, remembering all the secret 1-Ups and Warp Zones from decades ago. Then I decide to pop in the loose Zelda cart I had laying around. I manage to beat the first few dungeons and start acquiring better items. I grab some graph paper and start charting out the Overworld. I'm hooked. I've just had more fun and been more immersed than I have with any current-gen AAA titles.
Then I make a huge mistake: I start reading up on the history of the NES, and all the titles and peripherals that go along with it. Being a young'n born in the late 80s, I completely missed out on the heyday of the NES. I never played the original Metroid or Contra, never new that the R.O.B., Max, and Satellite peripherals existed. And now I'm realizing how cool all that stuff was that I missed out on. Then I make another mistake of looking up NES collectors on YouTube, and seeing all the amazing game rooms. Everyone seems to be drowning in Little Samsons and Flinstones.
So long story short, I've decided to start collecting for the NES. My hope is to start with titles that have personal significance, then gather up the launch day black-box titles, then the rest of the first-party releases. And obviously I'll pick up good deals that I happen across along the way. I'm also really drawn to CIB system sets and peripherals. I doubt I'll ever have a near-complete library (my wife will put her foot down long before that!), but I hope to put together a collection
that's at least fun for me.
Since I'm just starting out on my collecting journey, I'm sure I still have a ton to learn that Google hasn't yet taught me. I'd love to hear any tips/tricks of the trade/do's and don'ts that you ol' vets might have! I'd especially like to get to know any collectors that happen to be in or near my Twin Cities MN / west metro area.

Cheers
It's awesome when you're playing Super Mario Bros and it takes you back to when you were a kid and discovering everything for the first time.
Thanks for sharing and welcome!
This place is totally radical, so enjoy!
Nice introduction and welcome to NA! There are tons of great games in the $10-$15 if you haven't played much before. I've been to one store in MN called Mr. Zero's - I wouldn't recommend going there. He is overpriced.
Cheers
Thanks! Mr. Zero's was on my to-do list, so that's good to know. If I get desperate enough I might still check it out, cause it doesn't seem like MN has many options for picking up games, especially with winter setting in!
Welcome! There are a lot of local guys around. We have get together's a couple times a year to play and trade games, drink some beers. We will be sure to let you know when the next one happens!
Great to hear! Keep me posted, and I can at least bring some beer
There's still many good folks on here, and occasionally you can even get a trade done, so good luck and if you ever want to trade manuals or boxes, let me know.
I'm in your area. A few really nice stores in the cities are We Got Game (Mankato/Uptown Minneapolis-- the owner Kareem is a great guy) and Punch Out gaming in Forest lake.
