Do you wish controllers were still wired?

Seriously as convenient as wireless controllers may be, I've never had any issues with wired controllers and the wire length. I find it annoying when you have to recharge a controller and can't do anything until then. I know most controllers have pretty good battery life but for the battery hogs out there like the Wiimote or Wii U tablet that only last a few hours, it gets ridiculous.

  • Nah, less wires the better. I'd love to have the input and power be wireless too (obviously power is impossible). I can't think of many issues I've had with mine.
  • Wires tangling is a pain in the ass. With wireless I just buy an extra and have one charging while I use the other, it sucks to have to pay for an extra controller but I'd rather that than deal with all the wires
  • I have had a lot of wireless controllers crap out on me. I cant really say I have had that problem alot for well built wired controllers. I like a good wired controller as long as I can buy some cheap extensions to go with it like I do for my Gamecube controllers.
  • I can't wait for the Retro USB wireless NES controller. Coming soon from Retrousb.com!
  • I say good riddance. I don't like the limitations of wireds controllers
  • I prefer wired, assuming the wires are long enough.

No connectivity concerns (2.4 GHz is better than BlueTooth, but those channels still get a lot of interference sometimes).

    No battery concerns.

No latency concerns. (wired controllers almost always prioritize much better than any wireless methods though 2.4 GHz is, again, better than BlueTooth in that regard)

    Just impractical.

Nailed it man...I honestly "hate" batteries and I hate latency even more.

No I take that back...I hate batteries more.

  • No, but I hope wireless controllers are better now. Both my PS3 and Wii controllers like to become unpaired occasionally (and I've tried absolutely everything to fix them, every single page 9 Google result forum post...)

TVs are so big now that I don't want to sit 4ft away from them like with old consoles and big ass cables are a pain to manage or make look nice.
  • I like wireless controllers, with our big-ass TVs we cannot sit 6 feet from the TV anymore, so wireless is somewhat mandatory nowadays.

My main concern is finding good quality batteries in 20 years if I still play my PS3 or Wii U, but they're still selling decent third-party Gameboy Advance SP batteries on eBay for $3 and Nintendo is still selling the OEM version, so we should be okay.
  • No.

My setup requires controller extensions for all of my non-wireless controllers, so every time I put a controller away, I'm winding up a 6' controller cable with a 6' extension cable. It can become a mess.

I was waiting for you to say that

No, I love wireless.  Get youself a decent dock, and charging isnt really that inconvienent.
  • I may be in the minority but I like wired controllers better provided the cord is not too short...I don't want to have to worry about the controller's battery running out you see.
  • Wired is best. On the Wii, when you run out you have to swap batteries, or if you have a pack, put it to charge and stop playing. PS3, you play for 3h, then it runs out, you plug it in (using the short USB cable) and continue.

The PS3 approach is not too annoying, except the bundled USB cable is way too short, so I have to sit twice as close as normal.

Latency really isn't a concern anymore for modern wireless controllers. IIRC Sony's DS4 has something like 2ms latency on the PS4.

    Batteries still suck though.

It's absolutely a concern if you're primarily playing games on your PC.

I'd assume a console would have the prioritization worked out, to where even bluetooth would consistently poll correctly at a desireable and known time.

But on the PC, Bluetooth doesn't have that type of authority in the same way that hard-wired USB does, giving USB an edge in terms of guaranteed consistency of response.

I don't do any of the modern consoles.  I have Steam/GoG/emulators-galore set up on an HTPC in my living room.
  • Good old fashion rechargeable AA batteries have made life so much more simple that we've never bought a gimicky charger like that for the wiimotes ever since.

Everything should run on AA batteries. Everything!
  • After trying to play a modded xbox across my too-wide living room last night, I can safely say no, wireless is better. The Oxbox even had crazy long wires.

Besides, you can still buy wired controllers for current gen anyway.
  • I always buy wired controllers when possible. I hate wireless. I usually go with the Rock Candy controllers.

No idea why ps3 battery life is so poor on your controllers, but 10 ft mini usb cables are 5 bucks or so on ebay, with free shipping too. If you're in the US make sure you check us only cause otherwise you'll be waiting weeks if it ships from china or hong kong.
  • I absolutely despise wireless controllers, especially official PS3 controllers. They love to die for absolutely no good reason, usually from being charged a little too long... Just bad design. When they do work, they're laggy as hell. It made games like Little Big Planet even worse than it usually is. Any wireless controller with a rechargeable battery is not a good controller.

Anytime threads like this come by, I just sit back, chuckle and continue to play my older consoles which have never failed me.
  • I don't understand how anyone can prefer wired anymore. I mean if battery power is the issue (since latency with wireless controllers really no longer is unless you're a world champion speedrunner), just plug a 20 ft. charging cable in while you're playing, and suddenly your controller is wired with a cable of whatever length you choose. Unless your controller uses AA batteries, I don't see a case for wired at all anymore.
  • I don't miss wires when I use wireless controllers. Wireless is almost a godsend. PS4 controller battery life sucks though. But the Wii U pro Controller lasts a very long time... clearly Nintendo did something right in the battery department.
  • With wired, you don't have to pair and re-pair with the console constantly, or put up with signal interference, or constant dead batteries, or spend forever trying to track down a compatible USB charge cable (360 sucks hard in this regard).

I solve all that by not playing modern consoles. The past fills my gaming needs perfectly.
  • I envy people who have enough free time to play on their PlayStation long enough to kill the battery on their controller.
  • Basically my PS4 controller is wired; the battery is fucking garbage. I sit 4 feet away from my TV
  • WAIT a minute...

...They make controllers without wires now...?

It's old, from 2008 like the console. Used to last a lot more. Yeah, I could buy a longer usb cable, but there's no longer anything to play on it, so CBA

It's way less sturdy than a permanently attached cord. I've had the PS3 usb cable come loose occasionally.

3h is a lot? You have to make some changes in your life man!
