PAL 3DS to NTSC?

My buddy bought a Year of Luigi 3DS XL a while back on eBay. As it turns out, the system is not NTSC but rather PAL. I don't know which country it came from. Instead of dealing with the hassle of returning it to wherever it's from, he threw it in his closet for a while, then decided to give it to me. It was an incredible gift. Unfortunately, the 3DS is regionlocked, making this thing an expensive paperweight.

He's gotten into the 3DS pretty heavily lately, and wants me to have a system so we can play games together. It's going to be a while before I can afford one.

I have a couple questions:

1) Is there a softmod that will allow me to make this NTSC compatable?

2) When I'm done with the system (when I get a New 3DS XL), can I easily revert back to PAL? (I like to keep my systems stock whenever possible)

3) No charger was included in the box, can I use my own charger, or do I have to buy one from the region where this thing came from?

  • 1) Dont believe there is any software mod to change the region locking unfortunately.

    2) See above

    3) Any charger will work from any region a usa one will be fine.

The only thing I could suggest and it wouldnt really make a whole lot of sense is to change the entire housing to another NTSC unit, maybe you can find a cosmetically damaged XL and swap the casings over.

    Hope this helps a little.

BTW if youre interested Ive a large collection of PAL 3DS and DS games (most are factory sealed) if you decide to keep it stock and want to play.
  • Perhaps you can get a flashcart? I don't have a 3ds so I don't know the scene state, but on DS you could play any region games, including local and online multiplayer. 3ds probably is not safe to go online, but local should work.

edit: the gbatemp 3ds flashcart comparison shows half of them work region free, and they appear to do so for retails carts as well as ROMs, so you wouldn't need to pirate if you don't want to.

Pretty sure the homebrew exploits from years ago were used to run region-free loaders and stuff. Don't think they were used to change firmware for eShop and online play such. I know custom firmware stuff was just getting big last summer but I didn't follow it closely and I don't know if they ever managed to change firmware regions (wouldn't surprise me).

GBATemp is the forum to check!

  • I totally forgot I had this thread, thanks for all the advice guys!

I think he'll be disappointed in the fact that I won't be able to soft-mod it. That's okay though, it's gorgeous just as a display piece.

Katchii, I'm tapped right now, but I'll keep you in mind if I need anything. I wouldn't mind having some PAL stuff to play.
  • Even though it's region locked, it's only locked to 3DS games. You are able to play and regular DS games on it just fine at least.

I don't know if there's any multiplayer support between different regions or even if that's specific to certain games than others (Trading Pokemon or something). If it is supported, you'll probably have to do your 3DS game shopping online rather than going into a local store.
  • PAL 3DS is slightly superior at some games. You can use German and Italian options missing here. (this impacted existing titles, because DS and DS Lite support them as well as Japanese).

It has offbeat titles of possible interest too. Senran Kagura Burst physical copies never reached US.
