How many games were not optimized for the PAL region?

So, I just got Probotector, and was super suprised to find it played exactly like Contra. No difference in speed what so ever, suggesting that they didn't bother to change the clock rate. After doing a bit of research, it appears that isn't totally uncommon.

Has anyone ever gone through the PAL library, to see how many games play identical to their NTSC counter parts, when played on a 60Hz system?

  • Sonic 2,3 and Knuckles are PAL optimized. The Mario games from Mario 3 onwards were PAL optimized I think.
  • Games like Sonic 2 are interesting. They have both NTSC or PAL data, configured at boot. Switching the speed afterward thus leads to problems.
  • Good idea for a thread. I'd say most if not all late NES releases were optimized, but there are quite a few games that are very slow, especially the earlier Mega Mans, early Konami games and a few others, mostly games by smaller conpanies. Early NES games are almost all unoptimized. One company that always optimized their NES stuff was Sunsoft, due to the music sounding like ass had they not optimized due to the DPCM running at the same speed as on NTSC
  • For a test you can always boot up said game in FCEUX and put the game in pal or ntsc mode to see how it acts.
  • I know I've seen a fairly detailed list about the PAL optimized games somewhere, but I can't for the life of me remember where.

SMB 1 was PAL optimized as well.

So you played Probotector on your ntsc NES? At the start are you able to get over the bridges before they explode? When i play Probotector on PAL in my experience they are impossible to get across.

Early versions of SMB1 PAL were not optimised. I have a 5-screw cart that feels so wrong.

  • The most known example is Sonic 1 for the Mega Drive.

PAL systems run on 50Hz, and NTSC games run on 60Hz.

Let's just say, Sonic 1 is unbearable if it is played on the original system.
