Games that are boring unless you crank up the difficulty

Palamedes is one of my favorites, but I have to play it on level 5 difficulty. On the lower difficulties it just takes too long for the game to pick up speed.

Any other examples?

  • Mario Kart is lame as hell on 50cc.
  • ^ heh, first thing that came to my mind too before I even got in the thread. 50 cc is ridiculous compared to 150/extra on most MK games. F-Zero is the same as with a lot of racing.

Basically any fighting game. Street Fighter and MK are both easy on lower difficulties and then become insanely hard near the top of the settings.

A lot of shooters would fall under this category too (Space Mega Force etc.).

Star Wars for SNES is another one. Those games on easy are pretty straight forward, play on Jedi and prepare to rage.
  • Choujin Sentai Jetman... an awesome Natsume-made licensed game for Famicom, but nowadays I can really only enjoy it on the "Very Hard" mode you can select via a simple code on the title screen.
  • Most puzzle games on the lower levels. Tetris, Tetris 2, Dr. Mario, etc.
  • Metroid Prime 3 is not necessarily boring but easy on normal difficulty which if you think about it can be boring for some people.
  • Duck Tales.

Besides the bee by Launchpad in the Amazon level I easily do a no death run on Easy. Still never got a $0 ending in that game yet.
  • If you're not playing Diablo 3 on Torment setting then it's way too easy of a game to play.
  • Fallout 4. I have to play on Survival Mode, or it just feels like a breezy walk in the park.

  • The only way to play Mortal Kombat 1 - UMK3/Trilogy is on the "Very Hard" setting.
  • Tetris, Dr Mario, Tetris Attack, Mario Kart, Mario Party and most Resident Evil games. That's not to say Resident Evil games are boring on easy but they are definitely more fun on the harder difficulty. Resident Evil 0,1,2,3,4, and CVX anyway, not talking about 5 and 6.
  • Sports games. I remember beating teams by 20-40 on a number of baseball games on easy.
  • Tekken Tag. Ive never even owned the game but just by playing the Arcade a ton when I go to my friends house and play it after months or years of not play it, I can only play it on Very Hard.

Its even worse when you drift because you go so much faster and look so much cooler.

Never knew there was a code for that.

  • Age of Empires I, II, or III and Sid Meier's Civilization Revolution. Mario Kart games was another good one already mentioned.

Similarly Starcraft II is an absolute joke on normal difficulty. I can't beat anyone competent at SC2 but the campaign is ridiculous.
  • Pretty much every FPS/TPS/Action game. Puzzle games might be the only ones for me where "normal" gives me the right amount of challenge, but that is because I suck at puzzles.

Actually shooters can give a nice pace on a normal setting as the harder ones are too hardcore for me.

Not sure what the secret sauce is in Master of Magic and Master of Orion that sets them apart from other games of the 4X genre, but I always thought that even on easy they were satisfying and fun to play.

You certainly get a lot more variety and a longer campaign when you play at a higher difficulty, but they still seem to click in the right way on easy.

  • Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! is too easy for me on the default game mode. I always play Another World Circuit for a greater challenge. Plus, I like how the feeble opponents such as Glass Joe and Von Kaiser aren't even present. Also, the wimpy first versions of Flamenco, Honda, and Bull are also not present. Rematches are not allowed so one loss is game over. For added challenge, I like to start each match off by pressing select to wipe out half of my health bar. This also prevents me from getting some health back at the start of the 2nd and 3rd rounds. Here's a fun challenge for those that think MTPO is too easy:

    1. Beat Another World Circuit. (You must go undefeated 9-0)

    2. Start each fight with half of your health bar. (Press select to have Doc massage your shoulders)

    3. Get a TKO or KO on Tyson. (No decision wins are allowed)

So why haven't we all added eachother and put together a time we all play against eachother yet?

That is all I want to know?

Boy, that sure is the truth.  I always play through the 50cc class because I always want to win every cup in every class, but once I clear out the 50cc and 100cc, I never go back to any of those ever again.

I'm typically late to the party when it comes to current gen stuff.  I just started going through Mario Kart 8 this past weekend.  I'm done with 50cc and half way through 100cc.  The 200cc class definitly caught my eye.  I'm curious what that's going to be like.

Because you've never asked! New Year's Resolution: drift past y'all through the finish line

  • A lot of shoot 'em ups from the 8 and 16-bit generations.
  • Pretty much most fighting games. On easy, most of your opponents will just stand there with their thumb up their butt waiting for you to attack.
  • I think it was mentioned but when playing Dr. Mario on any lower levels is just boring. Level 20 or bust!

This seems to be the case with puzzle games. Once you are any good at a puzzle game then you need to play at the higher difficulties for it to be fun.

I do completely agree. I do have a rather deep fondness for the Lolo series despite having played through 1 &2 at least 5-6 times a piece. Challenge isn't really there but I still love them.

The CPU actually makes a lot of errors on 200cc which eases the difficulty a bit. It's really fun though as it's much faster paced than any MK game in the past.
