Both are great, the ds lite is slim and lighter and sturdier but something... Somewhere the original ds just feels better to play on... Like something about the screen and the way it's angled... I don't know I just like it better...
The DS Lite is awful. It's too small, it has sharp edges on the corners, the D-pad is mushy and worthless along with every other button, GBA carts stick out too far and they are near impossible to fix if you have a broken top screen. The ONLY positive is the brighter screens.
The DS Phat has the same excellent clicky buttons from the GBA SP, it has a stylish look, fits comfortably in most hands, GBA carts are fully concealed when inserted and they are far easier to do repairs on. The only real downside is the screens are a bit dimmer in brightness, but I don't mind. I've found the screen hinge tends to break more often on the DS Phat, but at least it can be repaired without damaging the top screen ribbon cable accidentally. I suppose the stylus is a bit too small for some, but I don't mind.
If the DS Lite at least had better buttons, I wouldn't dislike it so much. A D-pad should not randomly hit diagonals when all you want is direct up/down/left/right.

DS Phat according to Nintendo is the NTR-001. I forget what the DS Lite's product code is, but I do know it isn't NTR-101.
The main selling point of the original DS (and Lite by extension) is the GBA slot. Unless you just can't live without dinner plate-sized screens, the DSi XL can't compare. The DSi and XL are also completely worthless now that the DSi Ware store has been shut down, they're just feature-removed DS systems.
Another vote for DS Lite. The only thing that sucks is the broken hinge so I gotta use a rubber band to keep it up. Otherwise I'd probably own more than one
I found ds lites to break much more easily than the ds phat. I only had a ds phat and it took 5 years before one of the hinges cracked a little. Everyone else I knew that had the ds phat experienced the same thing. Solid system, that was durable. Everyone I knew that got the ds lite had one of the hinges break within the first year, often within the first couple of months. Their ds lites also would also often click back too far when they opened them up. This led to the ds just flopping closed if you tilted it slightly.
3DS is best though. Get a GBA SP 101 if you want to play GBA games.
The best part of the DS Phat (and Lite) is the DS and GBA slots, two of Nintendo's best portable consoles in one. This is just me, but I'd pick the GBA over the 3DS.

I've had a DS Lite since fairly close to launch, and over the past couple of years it has seen extensive physical abuse from a toddler... and I've never had hinge issues.
I don't think any of my other family members with one have had issues, either.
I wonder what you guys were doing do your DS Lites that you were beating them up worse than how a 2 year old plays with it...
(My preference is DS Lite rather than DS Fat, purely from the standpoint of design aesthetics... the original is one ugly piece of industrial design)
The original let's me use my R4 card...my lite won't let me use it.
That's weird. I had two DS Lites that use R4 cards just fine. Have you tried setting the date on the internal clock back? I got an error that wouldn't let me use the cards, so I set the clocks in mine back to 2010 and they work just fine.

haha no clue. A lot of the kids that had them were under 10. After reading through all the posts, it's interesting that so many people had different experiences. People have had bad experiences with both, and nothing but good experiences with both. One of my college friends said the same thing you did - that he never had problems with his DS lite, but had some with the DS phat.
I still vote 3DS haha. Smooth design, and obviously a more powerful system. The regular DS is a bit bulky and not as sleek, but I'm afraid to even touch a DS lite for fear of it's fragility. The kids in my neighborhood have forever scarred me.

DSi and DS phat have trouble competing with it.
I mean of course, the original big system. Why is it preferable to the DS Lite, if at all (I only ever owned the latter)?

If looking at only original vs lite, i always pick biggest screen size if thats an option.
