Loading gamecube games off an sd card onto wii?

I'm looking to possibly load gamecube games from an sd card using a wii. Would I have to soft mod a wii to do this? I would love for it to be simply using the sd card slot in the wii and loading ISOs and playing it as a gamecube everdrive of sorts.

If not possible what's the easiest way to load games like this on a gamecube?

thanks!

  • Softmod it then install nintendont.  To my knowledge there is no way to play games off the SD card without softmodding it.  I have softmodded about 8 Wiis and they all work great.  I am currently playing GC games in progressive scan off my SD card via the Wii.  I really wanna try it on the Wii U next.  I hear playing GC games in progressive mode via the Wii U HDMI out is even better than playing in progressive scan via a GameCube with the official compoenent cables.

I currently have a softmodded Wii, console only, that I was thinking of selling.  I can load up any game you want including official VC games, official Wii games, official gamecube games, and a ton of emulators with games (Neo Geo, TurboGrafx, NES, etc.)

    PM me if interested.
  • Datel still sells Wii SD Media Launcher. I'm not familiar with it though.

Compatibility varies depending on the method. Certain games are best run from discs AFAIK.

Gamecube unlike Wii, does not have a similar softmod. You can use a commercially produced boot disc or save file exploits within games.

SD Media Launcher without installing the Homebrew channel?  I never knew that was possible.  All I do know is that compatibilty has been 100% for me once I have softmodded the system.  Some games require certain patches and what not but I have never found a game I couldn't get to run after some tweaking.

  • A quick Google search brought me to this.

It says it even works on GC however a 4gb max SD card size is wack. The Wii goes up to 512gbs.
  • I was thinking of softmodding my Wii to make this possible but I don't know if I want to risk bricking it if I screw it up...my wife did give it to me for Christmas 2008 after all. Still it would be really neat to be able to do an everdrive sort of deal for GC games!
  • A wii can support 512 gb SD cards? Even so, you could get a external hard drive of that size for much cheaper than a SD card that size would be.

Nah, the Wii only supports SD/SDHC cards. Nintendont also supports loading isos from a USB storage device, but I've had issues with the loader freezing trying to read from USB sticks so I stick with SD cards.

I also recommend softmodding your Wii and installing Nintendont. I've done the soft-mod to both my Wii & Wii-U's Wii mode, it's pretty easy to do once you got all the necessary items/software.

  • The wii can support up to the largest SD cards on the market.  I currently am using a 64gb card with no issues.  You just have to format the SD card to FAT32.  Check out this link.

Someone there confirms a 512bg sd card working on his Wii.  Id have a larger one if I wanted to spend the money but I don't as I have a TB potable HDD I use to play games off of.  They load faster from the USB port on the back of the Wii anyway.

Yes.  It has been confirmed.  I am currently using a 64gb SD card.  You have to format the card to FAT 32.

Wouldn't the pertinent issue be the size limit for FAT32?  (rather than the total size of the SD card)

I had the impression that Windows couldn't format FAT32 anywhere near as large of a size as what you're describing.

I have the program to do it.  I believe it's called GUIFormat.  Just Google it.  I am at work so can't check now what I use.  There are a number of programs that do it.  I can Dropbox it for you when I get home tonight.  I have personally done it myself so I know it works.  However, you can get much cheaper, and faster, reading options via USB drives.  I would personally recomend something like this.

    https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B017DH3O5A/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=1C9X32CGH8XNG&coliid=IYADJRX7MV62K&psc=1

I like low profile USB thumbsticks as it hides them well.  I have had TB drives pluged into the back of the Wii but it looks like crap.  That's why SD cards are nice becuase the Wii looks totally stock.  Or that Samsung USB thumbstick would be sweet becuase its white and very low profile.

The Wii can read faster from USB drives.  There is a max SD read limit in place on the Wii.  No mater how fast your SD card is the Wii throttles it.  From experience I get much faster performance via USB.

Some software was never updated to recognize SDHC. SD Media Launcher, Super Smash Bros Brawl, to name big ones.

Officially Nintendo added support on March 25, 2009. Odds are any Wii games released before that date remain limited to regular SD.

  • As an alternative, I recommend Dolphin, if you have a semi-decent PC. The graphics are far superior to original Gamecube and you can use whatever display, audio, and control options you want.
  • Well what I'd be interested in would be if you do it similar to the Everdrives and be able to play GC iso's off an external hard drive connected to the (GC-ready) Wii. I think there's a part of the modded/homebrew Wii that does that but does it really work just like playing a real disc...or is it too merely emulation like Dolphin?

In between. You're running the game on mostly original hardware, except for bypassing the optical drive.
  • So it IS like an Everdrive for the GC? So basically I just need to figure out how to do that softmod/Homebrew the Wii (I've seen how-to videos on YouTube but they sound a bit confusing and I'm afraid I'm gonna screw it up and FUBAR my Wii (remember it was a 2008 Christmas present from my better half so...) and then to hold the GC isos I'll need an external hard drive...I think a 2TB one should comfortably fit all the games (though with them being around a GB each that would take a lot of downloading and patience...maybe I should just do the top 50 or top 100 or so...)

I have two Wiis that do exactly what you want.  Yes, it's just like an Everdrive.  You just need to soft mod your Wii then install the App/Channel called Nintendont.  Nindentont will run any GC game off an SD card and/or a USB thumstick or USB portable drive.  There is a setting in Nintendont to choose either loading games from the SD card or the USB port. I can send pics or videos of my system running GC games off the SD card if you want.  They play perfectly.  Some say they play even better because the load times are quicker.  Remember there is no laser trying to get the info off an optical disc.

Also feel free to PM me if you have questions about how to soft mod the system.  I don't think I should post that stuff in threads as I think technically it's against the rules.

  • Hacking the Wii is easy and so versatile in the sense that it can run a ton of different things. Another super cool thing is that, from what I hear, any hack done to the Wii will also work on vWii. vWii is the virtual Wii mode on the Wii U. I hear running GC games in progressive mode via the HDMI out on the Wii U is the best way to play them on modern screens. I have yet to try this out as a friend of mine is storing/borrowing my Wii U.

SD card size compatibility. 2009 means it took Nintendo over two years to add SDHC support to the Wii.

PM sent.  If it's possible to play DS games on the TV as well that'd be even better still.  And yes I do think we should talk about this one on one just to be on the safe side...I think the main thing regarding the rules is not revealing locations of roms/isos (don't worry I know a super secret website where I get mine   ).

To be fair, SDHC was in development at the same time Wii was. It also released in 2006.
  • I helped Estil get his Wii hooked up with Nintendont. Anyone else need help just PM me.
  • Yes he did; thanks so much! Now I have a GC Everdrive of sorts! Just took me a little longer to figure it out than I would've liked. But basically you format your external drive to FAT32 format and you must correctly convert the GC isos (the equivalent of roms for cartridge systems) using the DiscEX program. Then you copy the converted folder (which will read something like "GALE01" (that one is Super Smash Bros Melee to your drive and it should read like this: L:\games\[what you want to name your game]\game.iso (if the game is two disc, name the second .iso "disc2.iso" and it goes in the same folder). You MUST have all the folders in the "games" folder on your external drive's root directory and you MUST keep the "game.iso" inside each converted folder named exactly as such (don't rename it!!) or it won't work.

Unfortunately the compatablity of DS games on it is awful    Guess I'd better stick with the SuperDSTwo whenever I'm able to get one.

  • Yup, DS games run terrible on my pc. I wound up getting a flash cart too. I didn't even bother trying to emulate on Wii. Screen resolution wouldn't support 2 screens, plus I figured it would run slow if it did work.
  • Unless I can see both screens on the TV (preferably being able to use settings to show only top or only bottom or position the screens horizontal or vertical of whatnot as different games use them differently) it won't work. So yeah it looks like I too will have to use a SuperDSTwo (that seems to be the best one) once I'm able to buy it and the micro SD card (I'll need a 128GB to hold all the US DS games)
