Never change NYT - Super Mario World and Gender Politics

http://www.nytimes.com/2016/12/22/opinion/super-mario-runs-not-so-super-gender-politics.html?_r=0

no, it's not the Onion, just the New York Times thinking Super Mario Run is the next front in gender politics.

  • Not going to give them a click. It's what they want.
  • Nintendo has lagged behind the gaming industry in general in gender portrayal and stereotypes. The Princess Peach game on the DS had her powered by emotions (cause women are emotional amirite?! /s), and Nintendo can never come up with a good reason why there can't be a female Link in a Zelda game. Hell simply stating "We don't want a female Link" would be better than the BS they've thrown out.

I always thought that Princess Peach game was super stereotyped, even as I am antiSJW. In terms of changing and start producing more female protagonized games, I tend to agree with Maddox on this one. Note he says it would be good if more women created video games.

Aparantly, that's not it at all:

    Lost In Translation.

  • I thought they was making a sort of "female" Link in something, I could have sworn I seen it once, Linkle or something was her name.

Ahh, Hyrule Warriors Legends... found it.
  • But in the end why does it really matter. It does not hurt anyone or anything. The whole gender issue does not really matter unless the person is a bitch feminist or a butt hurt transgender college kid. I'm sorry, this is just bullshit that does not pertain to anything to make a better society except destroy it.
  • This is why Trump is president.

Also...did they just assume Mario's gender!?!

Just because you don't seem to care about an issue doesn't mean it doesn't matter.

Is a "bitch feminist" different than a feminist in your opinion?

    hahaha #TRAGGERED

Yeah, New York Times is a failing rag for a reason. Heard they were down to 10% of what their subscription rate was in their heyday, and that they are downsizing, etc etc.

This is your first post? Probably should've picked a less controversial topic to introduce yourself.   Uhh, welcome to NA... I think.
  • Just the usual SJW's complaining that the minority doesn't have an equal voice, nothing new.

The Maddox video, as usual, is pretty spot on.
  • Getting worked up over this idiot is just what they want for more pageviews. A Mario game that stars Mario, what a travesty.
  • What the hell is a SJW?

Depending on the view, either someone taking up the cause of minorities/women/etc., or someone pretending to take up those causes to get laid.

From what I've gathered on the forum, lots of people use the term mockingly (but do so at the price of sounding like they are somehow against equal rights).

I wouldn't call it a price so much as an amusing irony.

Yeah, it has become a derogatory statement.

I understand that any movement can get annoying if it's too in-your-face, but equally annoying is the people who rail against it all the time.

She shouldn't be named Link, but being part of the bloodline-- I don't see that as being a problem.

  • Yeah I can't help but chuckle at the things some people care about. I'm all about equality but there's many places where complaining about it doesn't make sense. Mario is a man and always will be a man, sorry if that offends some people. If he's looking for a female platformer then he should give Shantae a try.
  • In 20 years, someone will hack it to put Peach as the playable sprite anyway.

I played Super Princess Peach and it is very clearly a parody of Mario platformers. Peach's emotions being abilities is proof of that.

Besides that, SPP is cool because it melds design elements from Mario, Wario and Yoshi platform games together.

I dont concern myself with politics and shit like social media (except my IG which is just about games) so im blissfully ignorant
  • Whenever females in Nintendo games are brought up (in this fashion), I never see Samus get a mention. She was one of Nintendo's most bad ass characters all the way at the beginning of the NES.
  • The whole bowser kidnaped the princess again storyline is trite. Mario games were never big on story but at least bowser used to have plans. Also peach should have been playable from the jump, just like SMB2 where she was GOAT.

I don't think many would disagree
  • Bwahahaha! Click bait. Who gives a shit? Maddoz ftw.
  • I was hoping this wouldn't go all gamergate/SJW.
  • The NYT with more cutting edge op-eds, trying to figure out how to stop floundering in the age of declining print circulations and record low ad revenues. Move along.

Totally this. They've embraced clickbait headlines to try to keep up. Not even clicking.
