Working on a Mega Man X buster only run

Now that i got the PVM setup, i have been trying to get some game time in.



I never have beaten MM X before. TBH i don't think i have ever even beaten a single stage. So i am running through the game now and figured i would challenge myself.



So i am doing a buster only run. Dash upgrade because it is mandatory, and heart tanks. No weapons and no buster upgrade.



It actually hasn't been that bad, i am down to spark mandrill. 



I am thinking if i beat it, i will try a Buster only, no heart tank run.

    I don't think I could ever do one, but it would be cool to try. I can only kill Chill Penguin with the buster. lol



    I can't recall, but doesn't Sigma require a full charge pink shot in his final form?

    Most of them were not to bad once you get the patterns down and know when to attack. 



    I think i could have done it without the heart tanks. Sting chameleon was really the only one giving me trouble.



    And i am not sure i have never gotten that far, but i think there is a workaround.

    I've beat the game a few times, but never tried a buster only run. I like using the different abilities though. And the programmers went through so much trouble to add those abilities, it seems a waste not to use them

    Nice, sounds fun! I've done a similar thing on MegaMan 2, but gave up after the robot masters because a lot of wily castle requires the power ups

    Yup! I figured why not. If he can beat it while getting all philosophical and chatting the whole time, i should definitely be able to focusing 100%.

    A buster only run is definitely doable for a beginner if you collect hearts. Also there may or may not be a part in the story where a buster upgrade is avoidable.

    This is actually a really fun challenge, and I've attempted it a few times myself. Go for the hearts for sure, OP!

    It's not bad if you collect the hearts and/or the E-tanks although beating Sigma's final form with the buster just seems to take forever.

    The final form needs the Rolling Shield...or a charged X-Buster will do in a pinch.

    Nice, I try that almost every time I play a Mega Man game and usually get all 8 robots but usually end up having to use the special weapons in the final stages. Good luck!

    If doing a buster only run, you can't use Armored Armadillo's attack. 



    So a regular non-pink charged X-Buster will work?

    You have to get the buster upgrade. If you don't have it after you beat Vile in Sigma's fortress, Zero will give it to you. Also, Sigma's final form can only be damaged by a fully charged (with upgrade) buster shot, rolling shield, or hadoken. Other than that, you can skip everything else you mentioned.

    Remember my brother doing this when we were younger. He did no tank, buster speed runs. I never came close to matching him.

    The only tough thing you will have to overcome is Sigma, that is pretty much it, the rest of the game is pretty tame.



    His patterns aren't too bad to learn though.

    I've done the whole game with only the buster except for Boomer Kuwanger. Somehow, I learned Sigma's patterns before Kuwanger's. I also did that run when Mega Man X was new. I don't think I could do it, now.

    Pretty much. 

     

    Sigma was a huge pain for me the first time I made it to him; I can't imagine trying to do buster only.

    I managed to get boomer pretty easily. Once he gets halfway, he just teleports a bunch. If just jump back and forth, charge your buster, and time it just right you can get your shots off without him touching you. It takes a bit. 



    I haven't turned it on in a few days, but Spark mandrill is all that is left. I know i can beat him since he isn't the hardest of the bunch.
