N-Gage: Any good?

Does anyone here have an N-Gage, either model, and is it any good? I know most of the titles are ports, but I actually am a fan of games like Tomb Raider, Pandemonium, and Sonic Advance, which had ports. Also, Sega had an exclusive called Pocket Kingdom. Is it a good system and what is your experience like with it?

  • Worst...game...system...ever. They wanted TRIPLE the price of a GBA to play WORSE versions of its games (like Sonic Advance, the screen is vertically oriented and you can hardly see anything outside of Sonic's immediate area!) With other systems like the 32X or Virtual Boy or 5200, you at least felt like when they first came out they at least had potential and at least had a chance. But I knew the N-Gage was a joke before it was even released.
  • There's a lot of QDs on eBay from Asian sellers dealing in 'unlocked' goods. I thought it would be interesting to tinker with but won't pay very much for a console as I too am skeptical of it. There are many unsold stock of games that can be had still sealed because it flopped.

I have to agree. Maybe the worst game system ever, because there have been some pretty bad ones, but it was a portable game system/cell phone hybrid and it did neither of those things particularly well. I never owned one but my friend did and he hated it. The vertical screen is small and awkward and, if I remember correctly, to replace the cartridges you have to take off the battery cover to get to the cartridge slot. Plus as far as I'm aware, there isn't a single "must have" game on it.

But if it interests you I say go for it.

Never heard of the R-Zone I take it?

I've heard of it, never ever seen one in person. N-Gage isn't the absolute bottom of the worst game consoles but it's not good either. How about the Tiger Game.Com? That one was pretty much garbage.

    There's also the Game.com.
  • ALways looked interesting to me, but not big on handhelds.
  • It was horrible. I remember using one in a gamestop back in the day. While it was cool to see video games on a phone, because at the time that really wasn't a thing besides like snake, it just played horribly IIRC.

I think i played tomb raider.
  • Absolutely terrible product.
  • Thinking of the N-Gage takes me back to the days of owning a Tapwave Zodiac.
  • At the time, it was much better than any other phone at playing games. But that's not saying much, as gaming on cell phones at the time was pretty laughable. Kind of a neat curiosity, but not really a serious gaming machine.
  • It wasn't great. Got the smaller one from Gamestation years ago. Sucked as both a phone and handheld. Think some games and consoles were rare.
  • From what I've studied, the Game.com's library does seem significantly worse than N-Gage. Nothing on that system ever looked appealing and I do remember the commercials for it back in the day.
  • But who even heard of Game.com?

But at least it had Duke Nukem 3d!

  • Didn't they just call it "gamecom"? That sounds so familiar, like I must have heard a commercial for it or something 20 years ago.
  • With the help of a dear friend, I actually scored a CIB Sealed copy of Pocket Kingdom off Amazon for $16 + 4 shipping! That's a bargain and it's definitely one of the exclusives that I wanted to get the system for! I will try and get an N-Gage console later, but Pocket Kingdom was the first game on my mind when looking into the N-Gage. It's been considered one of the system's killer apps. For those who didn't know, it's a strategy RPG by SEGA that parodies MMOs.
  • N-Gage also got a game called Xanadu Next (which is the same series as Faxanadu)

That looks worse than the 3D shooters that somebody cooked up for the TI-85 back-in-the-day... (Daedalus, I think one of them was called)

  • Get a gizmondo instead.
  • I wouldn't really consider it a system since it was a phone hybrid, but I really was not impressed when I played a demo at EB years ago.

If you're actually considering collecting it, don't.
  • Even when it was brand new, the GBA beats it in nearly every regard. The N-Gage had slightly better audio on some games and played more similarly to PS1 since it had polygon graphics, but neither of these benefits improved the gameplay experience significantly. I would only buy an N-Gage for collecting. It's a waste of time to turn it on.

I know you hear that one as among the contenders for worse ever but again, when it came out how many even knew about it?  Whereas the N-Gage was heavily promoted and did so expecting it to be a success.  Hence why the N-Gage gets the top Golden Raspberry in my book.

GBA is still king of that generation for me. Who cares about sound quality when the damn screen is worse than a TI-83? You'd be doing a disservice to your coffee mug by using the N-Gage as a coaster
  • Speaking of which my coffee mug from my college days has that awful "America's Next Great University" slogan...so what are they saying? We not great just yet but we will be!
  • Wasn't there an Elder Scrolls games on this steaming pile? I actually semi remember that one being alright

    Those bastards!

    I'd dis-N-Gage if I were you

So how was Pocket Kingdom? I always enjoy learning about an obscure console that I have overlooked, and the n-gage is definitely one of them. Not having a cell phone until like 2005 didn't help in terms of putting it on my radar. Trying to play Mega Man 2 on a razor was a bad idea, but it sold me on that phone!

My N-Gage QD is still on its way from Asia. A Chinese seller has a bunch of them up for grabs on eBay for about $30-35 a pop with free shipping to the US. I am looking forward to it. However, I'll probably head down to the local AT&T or mobile store and ask if they have any dead SIM cards to give me. They are a requirement to get it to boot, and I've been told that as long as you have one installed, it will work even if inactive/dead.

I'm also considering developing the first N-Gage emulator, and I already decided the name for it (N-Fuse). Emulation is sort of a fascinating concept to me, and it might be cool to be the first to make one for the system. It's hardware is not that obscure as it uses Symbian/Java and ARM, but I'd like people who don't have one to at least be able to sample the games and form a consensus on their quality and performance.

I just want to get one for the notority around it. Having it to pay extra to remove ads, best game being called Sticky Balls, announced a better model few weeks before system debut, and the executive of the company having ties to Swedish mafia and crashing a Ferrari Enzo going over 160 mph makes the Gizmondo a good example of how to mess up a hand held system.
