My Somewhat complicated rig so far

Hey NA,

I have been trying to get the perfect, or perfect for me at least rig set up and wanted to share my setup. Hopefully someone out there can appreciate this mess of wires   and if this is redundant, well.... what can you do. My goal was to be able to do the following

A) play my games the way they were meant to be on a CRT

B) Utilize RGB for whatever systems i can to get the best picture while also having a convenient RGB switchbox

C) Recording capabilities in 1080p that records simultaneously on my HDTV as i play on the CRT (great for not sacrificing input lag for recording)

After a bunch of research and some custom cables and Switchbox i think i am finally getting there. I know everything works now, i just need to get the rig complete when everything else arrives on friday.

I wanted to share mainly the GSCART and the ability it offers of dual outputting which is a really neat feature and where to get the custom cable you need to do it. Also the GSCART is good for RGB even on a CRT, you don't need an XRGB mini. There is a nifty SCART to component adapter that gives amazing quality by shinybow. Review below.

The CRT turned into a 20" PVM recently but the setup still remains mostly the same.

I use all RGB cables from Retro_console_accessories on Ebay. Her cables are excellent quality although somewhat expensive.

I had her also make me a custom RGBs (VGA connector) to Scart cable with a 3.5mm Audio plug.

Then i got a hold of a GSCART scart switcher which is CRITICAL to my setup for a few reasons. This thing is a work of art both cosmetically and how it functions.

1- It can utilize 8 RGB cables and switches automatically when you turn a system on

2- It can dual output so i can play on the PVM but send the other signal to my XRGB mini-Elgato-HDTV

Follwing the little layout below is how it will all come together. I have tested it all with the CRT using the Shinybow converter to get RGB into my CRT. But the PVM that arrives this week should be no different just using a different BNC cable and i will post pictures of everything and hopefully a short video to show you guys the rig and GSCART in action.

Just need a solution for Gamecube to get it attached to the GSCART via RGB. And maybe an upgrade to my Mackie speakers by getting a Sub with preamp. That is down the road though.

  • ...I still use a 20" SANYO direct RGB...
  • Nice! I'd be interested in know how this all went together! That was one thing I hated about scart and RGB mods is all the dang cables and swapping them around constantly.

I think joe talks a bit more about his setup in our pvm thread:

im so jealous of that gscart
  • Sweet I will give it a look see! A PVM style monitor is on the list eventually haha but prolly wayyyyyy down the road seeings as they are so dang expensive.

They can be had for cheap (or free!) if you know where to look. Read the thread, we discuss that in there. Its well worth the search and hassle.

Nice to know! I have craigslisted in my area before and while San Antonio doesn't have much to offer, Austin on the other hand does! The nice ones are usually higher prices though. I'll read through the thread when I have some time. If I can get my hands on a decent one for cheap (or free!) then I am all for it!

It went together incredibly well! Everything works exactly how i had planned.

The GSCART gives me two critical functions. Have a switcher for RGB(Auto switch is a bonus), and also being able to dual output to two tv's at once for recording purposes. I tested and can play on the PVM while the GSCART feeds a second signal into my XRGB mini and then HDTV to record the footage in HD.

Well worth the money if you can afford it. I am just paranoid now of what to do if the thing broke on me.

Next is getting a modded PAL gamecube so i can use RGB for that system as well.

I assume that's why that gamecube on your diagram is sitting there all lonely?   lol

Overall, looks like a nice setup! Actually, it's way more organized than what I'd ever have (I just have a bunch of converters and switchers daisy chained together... I'm just a mess. hahaha)

Yup! lol It isn't getting all these systems to play nicely on one setup. If the US got RGB it would be a piece of cake. But the cube doesn't support RGB.

Yeah i am bit OCD, hence the graph showing it all connected lol . But it is pretty nice being able to turn any system on without having to plug anything in or adjust anything.

Add in the fact i can play with no input lag and yet still record in HD is pretty sweet.

I am just waiting on a microphone now, and i can start working on some videos.
