SNES Classic Edition (coming soon)?

http://www.pcmag.com/news/350605/nintendo-patent-suggests-snes-classic-edition

Sure, this is speculation. However, it would be pretty asinine on Nintendo's part not to realize that people want to play these games, and especially SNES games. Frankly, I want an HDMI SNES, not just a pre-loaded console!

Let's just hope if they do make it, they actually manufacture some
  • No reason to get excited over a console you won't be able to purchase. Yes I'm still bitter about the nes classic edition if you couldn't tell.
  • finally something i can justify paying scalper prices for , if needed

Nintendo will never make one, and the Gamerz Tek NES clone that uses HDMI is a disaster, so better hope an SNES enthusiast with Bunnyboy's skills comes along.

    SIGH

You're probably right. Nintendo will likely release some 30 "must have SNES games" which will probably be great, but it's no substitute for a real HD SNES. So, can we all petition Bunnyboy to get working or what?

  • Honestly our best hope is Kevtris (the man behind the Hi-Def NES Kit) decides to go into the SNES and develop one...otherwise, we're probably waiting a very long time (outside Nintendo doing the classic)

Unfortunately he's stated that SNES isn't his area of interest. It'll probably have to come from someone else.

Yeah, he would certainly have the skills. It's the desire to make one that's the sticking point.

  • There's gotta be a demand for this? We should take a poll how many people would plop $200-300 on an HD SNES? I know I would, and I would imagine for those that have the skills to produce and market one, they could make a nice amount of moolah...
  • Thats a lot of speculation based on an image trademark lol

Well, given the AVS's history, you have to have a prototype, and then lots of testing of the library. That took awhile. Then a design has to be made, then taken to a Chinese manufacturer (can't do it in mass anywhere else), hope it's not the Chinese New Year, and spend x amount to produce a run or two. Then you'd be lucky to break even.

I honestly think it would be more along the lines of an HDMI upgrade kit for an existing SNES (which was Kevtris' mod for the NES.) The $200-$300 would pay for the kit and maybe installation. Still need a console on top, but most would already have one.

I don't know the specifics of the AVS finanicals, but sure, you might be unlucky and even lose money. On the other hand, you stand to make a tidy profit. Take a look at the Analogue NT. I think they've done very well, and their prices are over twice the AVS! I think a large part of it is marketing. I had known about the Analogue for years, and just recently heard about the AVS. Regardless, be the first to produce an HD SNES, you will make news, people will hear of you, and you will make money! Also, I know it takes lots of time. Again, the Analogue people said they put in many thousands of hours into it.

Does make you wonder why Analogue hasn't come out with an SNES version yet. Not even a hint of one. The only thing they've done recently is double down on the NES/FC version with an FPGA console similar to the AVS.

  • ....Duh?

    Seems like a no brainer.

I mean, once they fix this massive screw up with the NES Classic.

They could potentially get ANOTHER holiday season just out the NES Classic alone.

Then release an NES Classic #2 (Designed after the NES mini) the following year.

This is still a few years before they have to release an SNES version.

Manufacturing only 200K of the NES Classics, someone at Nintendo should be getting fired. They royally screwed up and left SO MUCH money on the table. They can still get some back (IF they actually release enough NES classics so people aren't pissed off anymore), but who knows on how much they've missed out on.

It wouldn't be a smart business move to jump straight to the SNES when there's still so much interest in the NES. Not yet.
  • And nintendo won't learn a thing.

They make money that way because they show potential investors and stock holders how desirable their products are because everyone is in a frenzy to get them. Cha-Ching.

It does suck for everyone who wanted one and hasn't gotten one yet,but that's how Nintendo operates.

And quite frankly while the NES mini is cool, the sound and video emulation on many of the games isn't 100% accurate,so you'd be better off playing on an emulator on your PC in some cases. So to me the NES mini is a little overrated.

  • Nintendo already left money sitting at the table with the nes mini. They missed Christmas and the hype has already died down. Come march they have the switch dropping and they really need to put all focus towards that, market aggressively and make sure it isn't the wiiU2.

100% this. It could just as easily be to go after 8bitdo, RetroBit, and everyone else using the design for their knock-off controllers. GameStop is actually selling an "NES Classic Edition controller" that is a knock off and some people here and in a Facebook group I frequent thought it was real. Sure, it had a white cord, but a some even preordered it without realizing!

Anyway, PCMag shared that ridiculous Geek.com article about Nintendo recalling the Wii U where they "confirmed" what a NeoGaf forum user claimed he heard from a likely-seasonal Best Buy sales floor employee. You know how they "confirmed" it? They called around a few stores and confirmed that they were all out of stock! Despite there being a perfectly good explanation for that which Nintendo themselves confirmed and they even mentioned in their own article (production ended + Christmas), they jumped to the conclusion that the Wii U recall was real.

I do think it's a no-brainer and they would have a lot of explaining to do to their stockholders if they didn't make an SNES Classic Edition, but this may not Benin preparation for that.

I'm wondering just how much they "left on the table." Not so sure it was a crap ton like what some imply.

Even if they did,the NES mini is not super high on the totem pole of importance for them. After all,it is just a really nice looking plug and play.

Yeah... but you know what would have made them MORE money? Selling more NES Classics!

Exactly. It also would have demonstrated demand. It's clear that if this were intentional then they would have thrown open the floodgates right before Christmas to get all the sales AND all the press for investors to see the frothing demand.

The consoles are from China and the controllers are from Germany. The controllers have been in such short supply that I remain convinced that they are the limiting factor here.

Well of course this is speculation! That was obvious. However, who says it's not fun

Frankly, with the success of the NES Classic I think Nintendo would be amiss to at least not think of an SNES Classic. Also, the trademark was for an SNES (technically famicom) controller. Why, would Nintendo care unless they were intending to somehow make use of the controller again? I don't think it would be worth their time to try and sue a company such as 8bitdo for releasing SNES-like controllers. Truth be told, 8bitdo could argue their controllers are different and that Nintendo does not make them anymore, therefore Nintendo is simply trying to monopolize the competition (knock-off controllers are absolutely legit, as far as the law goes). So yeah, who knows exactly why, but this is interesting and brings hope for an SNES Classic

-although again, I have to say: Does anyone here know how to make an HD SNES?!

Meh. I know what you're saying, and yeah the framemeister in the long run could be great...

but I'd rather have a genuine system that outright supports HDMI. I'm surprised neither Analogue nor someone else has looked into this? I realize it's not as simple as the NES, but if you can design and build the AVS, you can design and build the SAVS

  • There is a couple of FPGA SNES in the works, and the Framemeister isn't the top dog anymore, there is a cheaper and better option.
  • I don't think Super Nintendo has the same appeal. Nintendo is still slapping SMB1 graphics on everything. Maybe after a while, like AirVillain said. But also https://www.youtube.com/embed/Pa6fbOF3x8M

I disagree. I think the SNES has exactly the same appeal. Honestly, I would be suprised if an SNES Classic did not make more money than the NES Classic. It's simply much more complicated to work with, which is my guess as to why there hasn't been that many homebrews and no HD remakes.

Yeah I'd like to know to before I spend the money on one of the last batch of Framemeisters
  • If you check over at NESDev there is a discussion aboot an FPGA SNES, and the Open Source Scan Converter has zero lag and is cheaper.

The OSSC. I have them both and they are both very good at what they do.
