What did you get for Christmas?

  • Being that the NES Mini was scalped and way over priced, I just told my wife to get the mini Genesis. It's had a lot of complaints by many but I wasn't one of the complainers. First, I knew that half the games weren't for the Genesis and were cheapo, knock-off fakes. Even still it came with more legit SEGA Genesis games than the NES Classic so that alone was good enough for me. Plus, it was half price, it doubles as a legit Genesis, which is something I've been meaning to pick up for a while, and you can use original Genesis/Saturn controllers with it!

Needless to say, I'm quite happy and I actually enjoy the small piece of hardware. I also managed to get a Charlie Brown Christmas LP, Pixel-Art coloring book, pocket microscope (cause my kids and I enjoy sciencey things) and some LEGO (again, cause my kids and I enjoy them together), and the NES Vans and the Legend of Zelda Vans too...  but in different sizes.  The ones that don't fit will be returned (or sold here since they are out of print.  )

All-in-all, this was a pretty awesome Christmas!

Nice stuff. I hunted out the eBay listings to be bought though, I think next year I'll just give my family members a want list.

Always wanted to try Secret of Mana multiplayer.......

Thats exactly what I thought when I saw this post

That's pretty much why I got it... I love the Super Nintendo and SoM is the greatest multiplayer RPG on it, if not the only.

  • I was so worried about destroying/ruining my new mug that my fiance got me another one as back up.

My experiences with At@Games stuff was far less than satisfactory.

Last I checked, games with battery save will not work (or will not save) when used with these. Did they at least fix the sound?

Their analog composite output also seemed very poor. I'd prefer a real Genesis and a flash cart.

Audio was ok, but I was well aware that it had one line for video and only one for audio (it was missing the red connector.)  I'll admit the build quality felt bad but I'm an adult so I didn't mind. I play nice with my toys.  I also didn't try any games that needed to be saved.  I've never played a Shining Force game and I was going to give SF III a try when I had the chance.  If the battery-save doesn't work, then that will be a real turn off and I probably will have my wife return it.  I'd assume that something that obvious would have been integrated.

Honestly, I think my real satisfaction in this toy is that it works, has more options than the NES Classic and considering scalper prices, it's 6-7 times cheaper.  The NES Classic didn't have to be that way and getting just about as much fun for half the retail price provides a bit of added satisifaction since I feel like I'm sticking it a little to Nintendo for their poor salemanship.  I REALLY wanted an NES Classic.  $60 was a little higher than I would have wanted to pay, but it was OEM Nintendo hardware, shaped like an NES with a solid line-up of awesome games.  I felt they made the thing squarely for people like myself-- 30-40 year olds who were reconnecting with their gamer youth.  Alas, classic Nintendo decided to make considerably less hardware than demand required and they lost my dollars.  So, I feel like I'm sticking it to them by buying something else.

In the end, I know this will end up in a box and not even sit on my shelf but today I don't mind.  I probably still will get an NES Classic but I'm sure I'll wait until the market is flooded and people are selling unopened ones on eBay or maybe even Craigslist for $25-30 just to get them out of the house.  That point may not be for another year but I can wait and I certainly won't be buying it first-hand from a retailer who directly gives their dollars to Nintendo.
  • My mom has been trying to get me to 'get with the times' and update my technology, so she got me a new turntable with Bluetooth and a bose speaker to pair with it.

Also got a bunch of LPs I've wanted for a bit.

The husband got me some snes repros and a sweet ass metal 'arcade' sign with blinking lights.
  • Mom and dad bought me a Minecraft Creeper shirt, a Hello Kitty silicon mold (for cakes and such), Freedom Wars, Psycho-Pass Mandatory Happiness limited edition, and Root Letter.

My hubby to be bought me Akiba's Beat pre-order from Amazon...so I get that cute plush too!

I bought myself a Vita, Aegis of Earth, Assassin's Creed Chronicles, Assassin's Creed 3 Liberation, Child of Light, Corpse Party: Blood Drive Everafter Edition, Little Deviants, Mega Tagmension Blanc + Neptune VS Zombies, MeiQ: Labyrinth of Death, Senran Kagura: Estival Versus Endless Summer Edition, Shantae 1/2 Genie Hero and Soul Sacrifice. And that's just for the Vita.

I also bought Corpse Party for the 3DS (the back to school one) and Animal Crossing Happy Home Designer bundle for the 3DS.

Really focused on the Vita...which is great since it looks like Sony is killing it.
  • Literally got nothing. Not even a Christmas or birthday card from my grandmother who always does that at least. Suppose my goal of being on my own and being my own person paid off. My wife's parents didn't even do either when we went to their house for Christmas. Score.

There, there, buddy. I thought I was in the same boat when I posted earlier. Since then I found out from Ichinisan that our older brother gave him a Dell gift card for us to share so I guess I did get something after all! Ironically, he's the only family member we didn't give a gift to yet (we did give to his kids).

Fuck em.  Your wife and kid are your family

  • My wife has been buying me my favorite posters and framing them.  Finally got the last one hung the other night

  • Boogie Nights isn't happening for obvious reasons, and she is resisting my hints at Escape From New York
  • Like clockwork, I got a shirt from Boscov's from my mother.
  • I got an Audio Technica LP60 turntable with some shelf speakers for my stereo setup. I also got some nice Sennheiser headphones.
