Giving up diet soda for New Years

Honestly, this stuff is like crack to me. It's the quickest and most efficient caffeine delivery system short of snorting caffeine tablets, and I love the taste and carbonation. Anyway, I'm giving it up for good since I know this stuff is bad for me. I expect 7-10 days of misery before I get over it.

  • It's an excellent decision. It will be rough, but you'll get through it. I did it several years ago and haven't looked back. Are you going to supplement the caffeine with something else? The caffeine withdrawals are the hardest part for about a week.
  • I love tea, so I'll stick with that. I expect to sleep most of next week, or at least as much as I realistically can.
  • Black coffee is the way to go.

Ah too bad. I love the taste of coffee, stronger the better. What kind of tea do you drink? A good black tea works as good as coffee.

Not a fan of coffee either. I gave up soda for a while too and switched to unsweetened ice tea, Tejava specifically because it doesn't have coloring or preservatives that would affect the taste.

  • Get yourself some chimarrão.

Soda I only drink if I am having some rum with it.
  • I was never into drinking pop or diet pop for that matter......I don't want to drink something that burns my throat up.

Good luck to you man, hopefully it isn't too difficult!
  • I quit sodas a few months ago. Unnecessary sugar and a free ticket for diabetes :/
  • I quit diet soda around this time last year as a matter of fact.

It was tough but worth it. Worst thing was the headaches, but I quit cold turkey. That was the only way that worked for me (I tried to "taper down" in the past and failed). And it wasn't easy. For instance, my work has a free, all-you-can-drink Pepsi fountain always online and well-stocked. So I had to stay out of the breakroom entirely for the first few weeks. Now it's easy for me to say no every time. Good luck to you!
  • Why not try a Sodastream? I got one for my Dad years ago and it changed his life
  • I stopped drinking regular pop over a year ago since I wanted to stop consuming calories from drinks. I still drink diet with a meal though, otherwise I just drink water. I don't know if I could completely give up diet though since it breaks up the monotony of water and I can't stand warm drinks. Good luck, it will be tough.
  • I quit drinking sodas (mostly diet) shortly after I retired about 2 1/2 years ago - I was drinking them for the caffeine since I don't drink coffee (I have had maybe three cups in my life.)

I switched to plain unsweetened ice tea - we get large ice tea bags at the grocery store and I use three of them to make a gallon at a time. A lot cheaper and a lot better for me IMHO. I occasionally have a soda of some sort now and then but nowhere near the quantities I used to drink.
  • I gave up diet coke for about a month. I noticed absolutely no difference besides the fact that I could no longer poop regularly.
  • I really need, and actually been trying to cut back on my soda intake, can't stand the taste diet. Was drinking up to 2 2ltrs a day, now I'm down to a 20oz maybe twice a week. Unless theirs rum involved then it goes up to one 20oz a day. Regardless I've shown myself i can live without it. I do drink coffee as well so its not like I'm killing caffeine off cold turkey.
  • I think you will be happy you did this. I gave up energy drinks several years ago. Diet drinks are really bad also so your making a good choice.
  • I'm not a huge pop guy and I cannot stand diet stuff

Coffee though, I need at least once a day
  • I'm addicted to soda...but damn I would never drink diet. One the taste isn't there and two I think diet is worse for you...weirdly enough but all those artificial sweetners? Ugh...some of them really mess with my stomach too...

I wish I could kick the habit but...at least it's not smoking right?
  • I rarely drink soda. I hate the taste of diet, and I don't like to waste the calories on regular, except for occasionally. Maybe I will drink two or three Mountain Dew 12 oz cans a month, at best, and that is only when I have it around the apartment. Recently Pepsi started manufacturing and distributing Mt Dew in Taiwan, before then it was an even larger hassle to get (It is still not easy to find, but easier than before), and I drank it even less.

For caffeine, usually I drink black coffee. Tea is also a good choice. The best teas are made with clay pots, and I hope to experiment with the art of tea making in the next few months. Already have my clay pot picked out and ready to go.
  • Quitting soda = you'll lose a bit of weight without changing anything else. Fantastic choice, OP. I haven't had soda since...2007!
