PSP is Still King of Console Emulators

The PSP has been around forever. I still don't know of any comparable device in it's price range. It still has better N64 performance than any Raspberry Pi, as far as I know. There are a million supported gaming systems. Besides having a very active community back in the day, why has no other emulator come close to the performance and functionality of the PSP? (Not counting smartphones) Was the PSP particularly easy to develop for? Was the architecture easy to port to?

  • And yet I still can't soft mod my PSP to run emulators :/
  • All I know is I really wished there was a better snes emulator for mine, really doubt anything has changed since I last bothered looking, it's the only complaint I has which is still minor. Plays everything else I enjoy like a champ.

Now if Vita ever get done like the psp, (emulation wise) ooo damn I'd be all over it like Toxie with Godzilla
  • Yeah, the latest version PSP never got a proper soft mod. The best I found required restarting every time you wanted CFW.

If the Vita was hacked like the PSP, it'd be Christmas all over again.

Also, I've decided to put my Pi Zero in a PSP. Probably going to use this guys kit, too.

My first choice was the original Game Boy, then the GBA. But the PSP has so many more buttons than the GBA, and a huge screen.
  • A few years ago I bought a Gizmondo with an SD card that was loaded with Windows 98 and a bunch of emulators. I remember playing a bunch of genesis games on it. I think it screwed up my OS on the system though because now it won't boot up! Haha
  • I've considered adding the custom firmware to run emulators on my psp-2000. Wouldn't mind being able to play the NEWS on the go.
  • Its a classy handheld that not only emulates well, but it has a great game and movie library too. It plays sega cd games well and like you said n64 does good on it. Between the psp and a soft modded wii, you can really emulate almost anything upto and including the ps1/n64/saturn generation.
  • I think it's the quality of the hardware in general, and perhaps it's one of the easiest handhelds to mod?
  • In the end I came to despise the PSP for software emulation. The hardware itself is poor quality, the power is honestly not that great and most of the emulators aren't particularly great or efficient. The Neo Geo emulator is appalling, it can't even run the high meg games. The SNES emulator is pretty terrible all around too.

The DS on the other hand is fantastic. ScummVM for example is right at home with the touch screen interface. The Neo Geo emulator (NeoDS) can run almost any game regardless of size, only issue with some is slowdown, but the music never stutters so it's fine. The SNES emulator is kinda wonky but at least it's not slow like on the PSP.
  • Back in the day, the homebrew community was awesome for most things. PSP was a little after the Dreamcast and original Xbox, but all three had awesome homebrew scenes and great emulators to go along with them.

I'd argue that (besides PC) the original Xbox is king. Most of the emulator releases were well-polished and had great performance. Upgrade the RAM, and you'll have yourself a great MAME machine along with even better N64 emulation.
  • I have a psp1001 I wouldnt mind putting emulators on for my kids. Is it easy to do? Anyone have a good site or video that gives step by step instructions on what to do?

I have NO arguments there, and I have no fondness for M$ peroid, I have a modded OG Xbox (traded for it forever ago) only aggravating bit was I wasn't shown how to add/remove emulator roms or really anything actually, pretty much just guessed my way around from trial and error. Guy had put in several emulators but only a couple of roms here and there except megadrive which had a lot. They all seem to work great and once I had my fun with it my boys took it over and dumped about every disc game they had on it. Youngest is playing battle front II as I type this...

but anyway, what I messed with on there worked extremely well which included a couple N64 roms, one was Majoras Mask and it was by no means perfect but was playable, Mario 64 played very well which is pretty damn cool for a console emulator.

It was easy for me to install CFW. Just be careful to follow instructions exactly and ask questions. The first link is Wololo.net. This was considered the central hub for PSP CFW updates. However, I think the Instructables guide is a little easier to follow for beginners. As always, there are numberous YouTube videos of varying quality that walk you through the process, as well. I recommend flashing the CFW to your PSP. Otherwise, you have to spend 5 seconds every time you power your PSP to switch to CFW.

From looking at the "good-bye posts" from some of the PSP CFW app developers, it looks like there were many skilled dev's that left PSP developing behind for a job in mobile apps. Around the peak of popularity with the PSP, iOS and Android apps were still in there infancy. The app stores were not what they are today.

My other thought is that the PSP was cracked early in it's life cycle with the Pandora Battery technique. With the enormous library of UMD images available on the web, the PSP attracted lots of people who didn't want to pay for stuff. The same group of people created a high demand for mobile emulators.
  • I dunno nvidia shield seems like a contender and vita has been hacked recently and is getting better all the time

SNES runs great in psp but you have to overclock it
