Better to sleep or pull an all nighter?

I got a bit of sleep in the middle of the day, haven't quite gotten tired yet but I'm like hour or two-ish after dinner sort of tired right now. So, is it better to fall asleep and risk getting up slowly/late or just stay awake and be a bit sleepy during classes? I'm thinking I'll just sit here and play some games until the sun rises, then drink some mountain dew and hope for the best. I'll let you guys know how it goes  .

  • a cup of herbal tea and a few hours of sleep might help more than not. sweet dreams.
  • Bit of sleep is better than nothing. The all nighter thing is fun until around noon, then it's hell.
  • sleep is for old people/parents, i know i am one. if your going to stay up, i vote for: go to the bar, eat some mushrooms, call a girl, smoke some weed.

i should be asleep right now....
  • Idk man, I've only pulled an all nighter a couple of times. Also tons of caffeine didn't help much with being tired.
  • All-nighter is never the correct answer
  • Personally it depends. If i need to wake up to an alarm , i need 4 hours. Any less and i run the risk of half waking up and turning the alarm off and falling back asleep without knowing i did it
  • Apparently I'm someone that is called no-sleep elite. Basically means I'm fine day after day on 3-5 hours sleep with no real ramifications. Eventually I will need to get in a good 8 hours and then I'm all good after that. For me I'm just fine with a little sleep. 3 hours and it's a little hard to get up but I'm good to go within an hour of waking up. A lot of people are just worthless with anything less than 8 hours. So if that's you and staying up all night is something you can handle, then more power to you.
  • Also if you do pull an all nighter, try and beat some of the games on the "can na beat" threads
  • I'm a huge advocate of sleeping.

"I'll sleep when I'm dead" is BS IMHO.

I'm in the same boat.  After a certain point in time, no sleep is better than one or two hours and the risk of being late for work.

  • I'd rather sleep for an hour than get no sleep at all.
  • Sleep!! Statistics show that sleep deprived depending on your occupation is just as bad as driving drunk. But everone is different, if you can stimulate enough thought and energy you can probably stay up and be fine. I do it a few times a year and feel like crap. Good luck man.
  • Take it from me who used to pull allnighters a lot in high school/college. A little sleep is better than no sleep at all, even an hour or two.
  • Sleep is always the correct answer. Always!
  • Always better to get a bit of sleep rather than nothing.
  • I'm always a night-owl kind of person. Maybe because I feel that I don't get enough time to myself when I get home? lol I think I just went to bed around 3am last night.

The longest I've ever stayed up without going to bed was 72 hours. Not something I'd recommend doing. If you can, schedule your day adequately and get your 8 in.
  • Sleep. I'm used to going to sleep pretty late after my late night coding sessions and I always sleep. You just can't do anything right after an all-nighter whereas a little bit of sleep can get you through the morning and some of the afternoon
  • I'm curious if anyone reading this is from Japan. I just read an article about "inemuri" on BBC.com and I must say... I don't see how that type of lifestyle is humanly possible. I'm not knocking the Japanese but as someone not from that culture, I can't comprehend how you can't sleep much at night and simply trade if for culturally-aloud, random dozing through the day. I would be completely, and totally useless.
  • Take a refreshing nap, your body needs rest to heal.
  • When I was a teen and my early twenties I used to just stay up. Now even an hour or two of sleep is needed before "just staying up"
  • I think I have had enough experience with this situation to assure you that some sleep, even a couple hours, is better than none.

The only thing to worry about with getting some sleep is waking up in time for your thing.

The only thing to worry about with staying up is falling asleep in the middle of your thing, especially if it's class or something where you'll be sitting.
  • Ended up taking your guy's advice, got 3 hours or so of sleep and I'm just as energized as always.
  • Glad it worked out for you! I always need to get at least 4 hours of sleep or I won't hear the alarm.
  • Add a poll! Also another vote for all-nighter! I have a bad habit of sleeping in class... If u got the skills u don't need to pay attention to pay the bills
  • Glad you found your solution. My advice is/would have been that it depends on your body. For me, if I can only get 1-4 hours of sleep, I'll function better if I just push through then collapse after fulfilling my daily obligations, as I will end up as a cranky, out of it mess with only a couple of hours' sleep after a full day (and night) of being awake.
  • Always sleep.
  • I've pulled many all-nighters in my life; usually related to gaming or studying. I can alternate my sleep pattern with relative ease unlike the majority of people so it doesn't really bother me. If I get my usual 6-7 hours of sleep for a few nights in a row, then stay up all night, I could either get my usual 6-7 hours the next night, or sleep the entire day away recovering and feel relatively the same.

If I am going to get less than 3 hours of sleep, I won't even bother going to sleep as that will do more harm than good to me.
  • So on Tuesday I was more than awake the entire day with 3 hours of sleep, last two days I've gotten 10 and 8 hours of sleep and both days I'm half asleep the entire day. That's logic for ya.

Lucky you, if I stay up past midnight for more than 2 days I'm awake untill 12:30-1:00 in the morning.
  • As a 36-year-old who has to severely limit his caffeine intake and has an energetic toddler to take care of, I'd sleep. YMMV.
