How badly can Capcom screw up Mega Man on iOS/Android?

Just take a look at Capcom's official trailer. The game is dropping frames like crazy! And who is going to enjoy playing Mega Man games using touch controls?!

Edit: Ars Technica confirms all six MM games run at sub-30fps, and the games have terrible audio emulation to boot: http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2017/01/do-not-buy-mega-man-1-6-on-android-ios/

  • That's a bush league gaming format by a now C-list company for ya   Nearly all this decade not one true MegaMan game
  • I didn't expect much from this. They needed to develop a Mega Man game tailored to mobile not port the nes games. The nes games are all about good controls and you can't get that on mobile.
  • That looks awful... I mean, it LOOKS cool, but the gameplay seems like shit.
  • Can't be worse than the DOS version from back-in-the-day...

Just wait til they port the DOS version to mobile devices...
  • This looks acceptable for Joe Q. Public to get a quick fix of NES nostalgia on their phone or tablet ("Cool, I remember Mega Man!"), and that's about it. This is the laziest of mobile cash grabs.
  • This looks like a nightmare.
  • Watching the video I was thinking 'Eh... maybe I'll get it. I bet I can no death it.' Then it showed Quick Man's stage with the beams and I realized... nope.
  • Megaman 2 is already nigh impossible to beat... add iffy framerate, touch screen controls and possible poorly ported AI and it becomes truly impossible to beat.

Also, how the hell did they manage to screw this port THAT badly?

Why didn't they use Digital Eclypse Mega Man Legacy Collection here? It was build specifically for porting the classic games to new platforms!
  • I still find it funny what you can manage to beat but think MM2 is hard.
  • I think the extra frames are DLC.

  • ... They... they added a charge bar because they couldn't make the sprite blink. They couldn't even bother to use shaders here to make Megaman's sprite blink when the mega buster is fully charged.

    Odin, thou hast forsaken us!
  • Wow...that's...awful just doesn't encapsulate how truly terrible that is. I can use a janky, not updated in years NES emulator on my iPhone and all of the MM games play flawlessly (albeit with the same terrible touch screen controls unless I opt to turn on bluetooth and connect a Wii controller), but Capcom can't manage to do the same despite having all of the resources that they do, owning the IP, etc. Even if they didn't develop this themselves, they were still asleep at the wheel in choosing whoever crapped this out and then signing off on it like it's not obviously broken. Ugh.
  • Hahaha! What's wrong with these companies now a days?! Does anyone not know what they're doing?

I do understand that you can't just take a normal existing emulator and run it to be allowed officially on a mobile platform, but this isn't the best way to go about it. Instead of even building a new emulator from the ground up, I would use the source engine from MM9 and MM10 since I'm sure they're able to run decently well on mobile platforms. This all just seems like a waste of time and money building something new then "fixing" it by adding a charge bar and stuff.

Was MM9 and 10 on the mobile platform? If anyone has it, could you please run it and tell us how the framerate runs on it? I'm sure it runs pretty decent, but it's proof that Capcom should already own something they could use to make this a damn good port rather than relying on emulation.
  • I actually bought ALL 6 of these this morning sight-unseen. I played MM4 for literally 5 seconds and knew how badly I had just flushed $15 down the shitter.
  • this genuinely disgusts me. I want to see Capcom fail miserably but this is not the way I wanted to see it.
  • Who cares? Capcom is just cashing in and, if anything, it will just increase demand for the originals.
  • Seems like a cash grab, even though it's a bit counterintuitive for the way they're going about it. They can make a decent port, not spend a lot of time/money on it, and keep the fans happy, but they're doing the opposite of all that.

Case in point-- they really don't give a crap what people have to say it seems. Just look at the YT comments... they're disabled. The like/dislike bar doesn't lie about what's going on though.

How are you supposed to control a game right with no buttons?

You should see Capcom Mobile's Twitter account this morning. You've never seen such venom in your life, the staff at Capcom are probably all hiding under their desks right now. Vicious backlash.
  • I saw this on Capcoms Facebook feed and scrolled right through it...........It literally takes 2 seconds of thinking to know this is just going to be complete ass....

I guess one of these days I will have to record Megaman 2 just to prove how bad I am at it...

I struggle a fair bit with the other Megaman games on the NES as well, but Megaman 2 is a very special case.

I think it is the easiest one! I mean, it even has a difficulty setting haha!

It is just so crazy for me to fathom you being bad at Mega Man but can master some of the most difficult games on the system.

I did play "A lot" of Mega Man though.

Wat?! Ok, you can no death run Ikari Warriors, and breeze though Ghosts N Goblins, but Mega Man 2 your claiming as hard?! lol I always deemed 2 the easiest of the MM series, well and 3. Just shows how some people has da mad skillz in paticular areas where others don't.

Plus it's fun to pick on Bea sometimes for no reason.   (I'm waiting patiently for the GnG no death run video)

I keep saying I am terrible at videogames, but no one believes me.

The GnG video I will record this Saturday. It will be a wee bit long because I will abuse the stage loop to score [Dr. Evil]ONE MILLION POINTS![/Dr. Evil].

  • Watching that hurt. Will give it a miss.
  • Could it be that the frame rate thing was just from the video capture process?
  • They could botch this pretty bad and yeah they probably will!

Next time you want to flush money down the shitter, send it over to me. I will make better use of it.

This game looks like absolute nonsense. The controls seem to make it impossible to actually play correctly. Whhhyyyyyyy!

Edit: clarifying why the game looks like nonsense.
