What are the "best" most exquisite limited editon games?
Video game collecting is obviously a "thing" that is not going to go away any time soon (nor should it)! Perhaps that is why so many releases have "limited editions" coming out. In my opinion, most of these so-called "limited edition" are forgettable and generic -oh look, another cheap statue-thing, just what I always needed...[sarcasm]. Not to mention they are released in huge numbers and batches. However, every now and then, there comes about a truly wonderful limited edition which is a labor of love. Something that makes the limited edition really "special". Do you have any such games, and why do you feel they are so special?
I'll start us off:
Lunar I & II by Working Designs (PS1)
I really felt they put so much effort into these games. 1)They translated the game into English and did a heck of a job 2)they fixed up some of the controls and other issues from the Japanese version 3)the voice acting they used were top-notch, and you have to remember this was before most games actually cared about their voice actors 4)nice hardbound manual (!) 5)soundtrack CD 6)map and 7)other goodies all in a compact and beautifully designed box. WOW! THIS, is is how a mass-produced limited edition should be! I feel that most limited editions these days just miss the point. Perhaps the most recent one I saw that I think comes closest is actually the Tales of Symphonia Limited Edition for the PS3.
One reason I like the homebrew community is because they do take care and produce lovely limited editions. One example is Sole Goose and his amazing limited edition of Swords and Runes. There are actually two limited editions -the really expensive one (which I missed, bummer) and the less expensive one, which is still awesome, and comes in a box with a beautiful map, manual, and when you insert the cartridge it has the limitation number on the screen
Nicely done indeed!
Also, while not a video game, there was a 4 CD, limited edition of the soundtrack to Skyrim released, and the copies were all SIGNED by Jeremy Soule! That, was most amazing. I feel that autographed items like that are truly special. Wish I would have gotten my Working Designs games signed...

Each one is unique and show the time and effort he puts into them.
Other than that, nothing comes to mind, but I hate most modern games, so I don't buy anything modern in terms of LEs.
Xenoblade Chrnoicles X LE also comes to mind with the large box and extras.
Catherine LE had some cool stuff in it.
NIS America usually packs TONS of extras into their LEs, definitely worth checking out their stuff!
Hard to think of a good current example. It does always seem to be an art book and decent statue, neither of which really appeal to me. There's few times I want to see concept art for modern stuff, and I don't have a lot of real estate for statues.
Oh, and current LE's also get some BS status symbol DLC. No thanks.

Exactly. That really seems to be the case for the vast majority of LEs released today. Now the game itself can be great, but the LE seems to basically be "here's a cheap statue" followed by "a much smaller artbook than you expected" and of course "hey, here's some DLC we could have included in the disc, but we're making it a DLC until we release the GoTY or some such thing later on"
By the way, for all you really old-school folks who remember Ultima and other such computer games -those games were not LE, but dang, they were packed to the brim with amazing stuff that today would only appear in a really really good LE...

Thanks for the shout out in the OP . I just had an idea and ran with it. It was partially influenced by what others had done in the community, but the other influence was the Ultima games. Not having ever played them, or even seen them, I read Dungeons and Dreamers and came across Garriott's insistence on a cloth map, which is why the S&R LE had to have one too. Such a neat idea that he had. We tried a lot of different cloths, and wasted a ton experimenting, but eventually we got it right!
As for modern LEs, there are a bunch of 3DS ones that I would like to get, but in the end I feel like I started too late to get in on them. I'd like to pick up the Bravely ones, and Xenoblade for the Wii, but other than those, probably nothing else. I did pick up Legend of Legacy, a bit dinged up but intact.
I like pack-ins, but my favorite ones are those that relate to the making of the game itself. CDs are good too, but not if they are only a few tracks of the full OST (Radiant Historia). Still, if it is a game I like, I'd prefer to have the LE if possible.
The special edition for World of Final Fantasy is one of my favorites. Skyrim's SE was awesome, too. Some of the recent Tales SEs have been really nice as well.
I really liked that 1 as well! The pop up book was pretty brilliant! My girlfriend bought it but i have it in my game room! The FF XV Ultimate edition was pretty cool as well!
Definitely agree with the Lunar and recent Tales of collectors editions! Symphonia one blew my mind with how much cool stuff they had crammed in the box! Also a fan of all the Fallout ones for 3, 4 & New Vegas! The Dragon Age Inquisition Inquisitors Edition was pretty impressive, even if it is just a big trunk of trinkets! A couple other personal favs were Duke Nukem Forever Balls of Steel Edition and Borderlands 2 Ultimate Loot Chest! And my favorite Steelbook award would go to Marvel Vs Capcom 3 Collectors Edition! Things beautiful!
Edit* Fyi, there is a pretty badass collectors edition on square enixs website for the second Nier game if anyone hasnt seen it yet. I think its still available! And i almost forgot about the Ni No Kuni Wizard Edition. Wish i wouldnt of sold mine!
Other then that I'd say the Fallout 3 and New Vegas Collector's Editions are pretty nice. Fallout 4's Pip Boy Edition sucked super mutant balls.
Seems like what I would call a "generic" LE:
*artbook
*statue
*DLC
It does also include a soundtrack which I like, but again nothing that I found particularly pulling. This is a "big" release, wonder how many of these they will actually produce?
The cost of CE's reaching into the hundreds of dollars these days is crazy to me.
I liked the days of big box PC games where you got cloth maps, massive instruction manuals and all kinds of goodies packed in for no extra charge.

Ahh, the good ol' days. I feel like I should be sharing a whisky with you
Well, I really don't drink. Uh, how about a nice cup of Chai? but yeah, cloth maps were awesome. Origin Systems was my favorite. Of course these days many games don't even come with a freakin' manual
I have one of the Swords n Runes LE's as well. Stands pretty tall on the top of the shelf
