Tarantulas and other beautiful creatures

Spoods (spiders) are amazing creatures that everyone takes advantage of. I can't be the only one to admire them... :^)

  • My favorite insect is easily the Praying Mantis. The camouflage of some mantis species is insane.

    I'm pro-spider, but don't own any.
  • I killed a spider literally within a 5 minute window of you posting this........Weird.
  • Not a big fan of spiders in general, but I respect them as long as they are not trying to chase after me or biting me or my kids (we had a couple very bad bites over the past summer ) I do have a fascination with scorpions, and also praying mantis.

Ditto. All other insects/arachnids elicit a "burn it with fire!" reaction from me. The Mantis is the sole exception.

  • I don't actively kill spiders just for the record but this one was around my food, it is just a primal instinct.

Also, when spiders want to decide they can start helping with rent they can fuck right off.
  • CHECK OUT ALL OF THOSE BEAUTS!!!
  • Spiders are so, so, but SOOOOOOO CUTE!

    I LOVE them to bits.

Except for brown recluses. Brown recluses die. All others are made to walk on my hand, pet a bit then released in a garden where they can thrive at this whole being a most adorable spider business.

    I LOVE spiders. <3

Did you pull a Meatloaf and hit if over the head with that Fender in your avatar?

I love Tarantulas, but don't keep them anymore. It is brutal living in sub-climates in Canada and trying to maintain their enclosures, even though they're pretty hardy creatures. I still follow the Arachnoboards group on FB to get my 8-legged fix.

Here is one of my favorite videos to show people who are squeamish, I was raising 4 Salmon Pink slings at one time, they were ferocious eaters and it always amazed me to see them catch prey in mid-air.

  • What about those damn camel spiders? They can run like 35 mph or something. No thanks!

There is another one on youtube named zilla. Shes a big girl.
  • That sounds like it may have been Rob's old channel (tarantulaguy1976)?

For those on the fence, how could you ever say NO to this tiny specimen of perfection:

I've encountered moulting spiders a handful of times when I was caring for them, it really is beyond this world how they live and grow.
  • After being bit by a few, I can't say I really like them.

Although the Floridian baby wolf spiders are pretty cute. lol
  • I had a Chilean Rose Haired Tarantula. I usually pic spiders for my macro photography subjects. My personal favorites are the jumping spiders.

    hax

  • I am the type of person that will take a bug that is in my house and throw it outside rather than kill it. With that said I cannot stand bugs at all and do not like any of them.
  • Nope. Would like to have a Gooty Saphire in this video. Several others I wouldn't mind having.

  • Anytime someone says tarantula, I always think of this scene.

Spiders are alright as long as they don't try to bite me or get near me.

  • When I was a kid, I worked at a landscape nursery and all kinds of weird shit would come off the plants being delivered from down south. One day a black widow came with the delivery. I made it a really nice terrarium and it lived in it for a year and a half! It was beautiful.
  • I've had a few rose hairs over the years, and some emperor scorpions, and just about anything else I could go out and catch and keep in a terrarium (mantids, cicadas, caterpillars, some really beautiful Micrathena and other orbweavers) My true entomological goal though would be to care for some stag beetles from egg to maturity. They're definitely my favorite insect or arachnid hands down.

Ha, I love hearing the urban legends about camel spiders from my wife's time overseas.

In terms of spiders, we usually only have house spiders and jumping spiders show up indoors.

We'll get black widows outside, from time to time, and I'll dispatch them.

The only indoor spiders I'll kill are when a "common house spider" looks a little too ambiguously like a brown recluse.

Can't risk having any of those alive.
  • I'd hold a tarantula if given a chance, but I wouldn't own one. I did consider it at one point though and did enough research to decided my favorite was the Blue Cobalt, but it is not recommended for first time owners. Apparently it is more difficult than most species.

Praying mantises are awesome too, I always stop to interact with them when I see them in the wild. On another "cool animal" sidebar, I've always wanted a mantis shrimp. They are truly a magnificent animal and their "punch" is effectively as strong as a bullet. The peacock mantis shrimp is typically the most sought after specimen.

  • Lots of amazing insects!

Dragonflies, moths, butterflies, ladybugs... the list goes on and on!

For the record, SPIDERS ARE NOT INSECTS! While I wouldn't have a spider or any arachnid as a pet, I certainly admire and appreciate them. They are truly underrated. While humans are truly overrated.
  • Holy hell that Blue Cobalt gives me chills!!!
