I'm a big Kirby fan, and Canvas Curse is my least favourite game in the series...because of the exclusive use of the stylus and touch screen to control Kirby. I don't entirely hate on the stylus, it has its uses. But I definitely don't like when I'm limited to only using it and not having any options to use the dpad. I'll admit both Canvas Curse and Rainbow Curse are innovative and good games, but I would rather play any other because they're not restricted to just a stylus
Maybe it is simply because when it first came out all of the uses for it felt gimmicky,
Just because there are a number of posts in support of DS Zelda that I vehemently disagree with (), I'll reiterate...
The map-making aspect of Etrian Odyssey makes PERFECT use of the stylus, and it's not gimmicky, at all.
Atlus manages to use it in a way that recaptures some of the childhood magic of DIY map making in a dungeon crawl, but with the game providing some "assistance" to make it less tedious, and to prevent errors or misdrawing.
The use of a stylus in Layton is entirely natural, and required. Again not gimmicky, at all.
The DS Zelda games, on the other hand, use the stylus in ways that could only be described as gimmicky, in the eyes of long-time classic Zelda fans.
Those games besmirch the good name of the franchise in ways only rivaled by the CDi releases.
I've never been more disappointed in a Zelda game, in my personal experience, so expect to be disappointed...
so if the game wasn't called Zelda you'd be alright with it?
No. They are pretty bad, regardless.
It would be less off-putting if they weren't tied to the Zelda name, just because you'd go into them with lower expectations in the first place.
But the core dungeon is repetitive.
The stylus combat mechanics are irritating and add nothing to the game.
The salvage ship mini-game is marginal, at best.
Overall it's pretty terrible, and it's worse for claiming to be part of the Zelda franchise.

I will have to play it again just to see how it holds up.
Kirby has always kind of been Nintendo's dumping ground IP for different kinds of games, so he gets a lot of experimental titles such as Canvas Curse.
I thought the game was pretty fun because it was something a little different that was definitely designed around the idea of drawing lines.
I get that not everyone is interested when a game has non-traditional controls. I'm in the camp where there can be really good games that aren't built around using a d-pad and buttons.
Let's all face it, Super Mario Maker for the Nintendo Switch will suck without the use of a tablet + stylus if the controller doesn't have a touch screen.

So some games are useless without a stylus.
