The Sushi & Sashimi Thread

  • I love sushi and sashimi myself. Sadly, I don't eat it often for a few reasons: 1) quality sushi/sashimi can get pricey, 2) quality sushi/sashimi can be tricky to find where I live and 3) my wife doesn't eat anything that comes from the sea. She'll eat catfish if it's been battered and deep-fried...but that's about as close to "seafood" as it gets for her.

I always order a mix of Sushi and Sashimi, and my favorite is BBQ Eel (Unagi). I haven't had the pleasure of trying Blue-fin Tuna yet, but look forward to that day.

Interesting; I never thought the mid-west would have an issue, but I guess that makes sense. Fish can only be so fresh for so long! Eel/unagi is by far my personal favorite, as well. The sauce is heavenly. Sometimes I just get unagi on rice with pickled cukes.

I figured with such an eclectic mix of game collectors here, this thread would see some action
  • wow so many nice people. I love you guys too!!

Sushi is my favorite food. I love the complex textures and flavors. Since I have had stomach surgery, I cant eat much rice, so I would have to say sashimi is my favorite now. But Smoked Salmon, Eel, and Octopus are may favorites. If we are talking about rolls, Spider rolls are one of my faves as well.
  • Spider rolls = God Status
  • I just started getting into sushi over the past 3-4 years. Started out with the strictly cooked rolls and am now getting more adventurous. There's a place in Madison that has a bento box which has hibachi but also a decent sized roll.

The only bummer is that going out for sushi is expensive. Usually my wife and I only try and go out for sushi when other people are around, so the table can share like 8-10 rolls.
  • It took me a while to muster up the courage to try sushi and finally did about 2 years ago. I have only found a few types of sushi that I like but have tried a dozen or so. Never had sashimi. Shrimp tempura and eel are my favorites. Anything spicy is a definite no-go. Raw sushi really turns me off but I have tried several types and just didn't like em. But it also took me 30 years to eat and like seafood so perhaps I just need more time.
  • I literally get the same thing every time at my local AYCE sushi bar.

    Cucumber Salad

    Seaweed Salad

    Tuna hand roll

    Salmon Hand roll

    4 mackerel

    4 squid

    4 conch

    4 red snapper

Then I take a serious lunch time coma nap.

Ever have the little baby octopus that is served whole?  That is a pretty odd experience in texture, because it mixes the the rubbery/prickly legs with a body that is really hard to describe (sort of hollow/squishy).

There was a Japanese place that I'd get lunch when I traveled to SE Asia that would garnish their bento box with those little guys.

    Very good.

They actually have that at my local grocery. Harris Teeter. It's in like a brown teryaki sauce. It's chewy and interesting.

I wonder where they are sourced from, and whether they are technically the same thing.

I'm sure the ones I had in Asia were fished in that region, because any seafood-based restaurant around there was set up like a fish market and you pick out whole fish for them to prepare.

I wonder if the ones around here would be an Atlantic-based species of octopus, or whether they are some Pacific-based and then flash-frozen and shipped.  (that works OK for crab, and larger fish, but I wonder how it alters something small and more rubbery)

I saw another member mention octopus, as well; I too enjoy it on occassion. I figured it wouldn't be long before you found this thread

When I lived in Hawaii, I used to buy them all the time from the seafood dept. in most grocery stores and absolutely loved them. Back then/there, they were called idako, although on my last trip back to the islands, I looked everywhere and couldn't find any. I was very disappointed. They usually came boiled and basted in a spicy sesame sauce. What I wouldn't give to have some idako right now...

Who else on NA is a sushi fanatic? I find myself going to the sushi bar at least once a week this time of year. Dragon rolls, spider rolls, various sashimi, party boats, etc. Went out last night with the lady, had a ball, and got to thinking:

How do you "roll" NA?   SHARE YOUR SUSHI STORIES!

I could eat that whole boat load. I love sushi and sashimi, it doesnt help a good friend owns one of the best places to go in town either.

Can you explain said roll for those of us who don't know?   Sounds incredible tbh!

Also, sea bass makes a very good roll.

Its an electrician joke, romex is used to wire residential buildings and yellow 77 is wire pulling lubricant.

All the cool kids eat their fish raw, wrapped in seaweed!

Speaking of which, I'm going to get some sushi this week. Pictures to follow in this thread from here on out!

  • I love nigiri and sashimi. I go at least twice a month to my favorite spot in Albuquerque. I have yet to try Uni but that is on my list to try this year. I enjoy Toro but for some reason Salmon is my favorite. Eel is the bomb as well.

Delicious. I've had everything pictured here. Eel is also a favorite of mine. Salmon rolls (especially with a little avocado) never get old!

Hey, did you know at nicer sushi restaurants, you can ask for sliced cucumber in place of rice?

  • For you sushi-lovers, there's also a really fun card game series called Sushi Go! which comes in two varieties. The standard game (2-5 players) and the "party" version (2-8 players):
