Focus on building new relationships as you look for games to buy. Lots of interesting people share this hobby, and it's great to get to know a few of them.
If you are sure you really want this to be a hobby instead of a passing fade my advice would be to.... study! You have to learn about the systems, games, how to spot fakes, how to save money on purchase, when to overpay for something mint, when to buy lots to flip, how to search for items or even eBay. You never stop learning but the more you educate yourself the better off you will be. Information is at our fingertips now so put in the work and your collection will show the results.
Have fun with it. It is not as serious of a game as some would have you believe. I'd also like to echo the patience sentiment. It's amazing how much money you can save on stuff if you're willing to bide your time.
Start simple. With games you know and remember playing. Not with what is the most rare and expensive. After some time, you'll know what you want and what you don't want. And maybe more importantly, what you're willing to spend. Ther are some great cheap games and some bad expensive ones. Again, start with what you know.mif you grew up with tha N64, don't go for a complete Sega Saturn collection. Start with what you know.
never walk in to a retro game store without 250 dollars or more on hand. and go for the rare games first if your wallet can take it. always ask and any thrift store if they have old gaming stuff in the back. (ive gotten a few good deals thats way)
and finally if your buying online off ebay or amazon if there isnt a picture of the game board on a high priced game always ask them for a picture to ensure authenticity.

Don't forget to preorder something you don't want just to make profit off people that actually want it as well.
The #1 rule to being a collector is screwing other people over in whatever way possible.
I changed my mind about the Switch, I dont want it. I will offer it to you since you're my friend, for only $700.
That is the nicest thing anyone has ever done for me....
Don't forget...the sunscreen
If you can, don't buy incomplete games, especially with newer games.
This. Completing disc based games is a bitch.
Be patient and wait it out, Man up and pay higher price now (or later) or get over it.
And don't complain about prices, either pay or dont.
Buy everdrives.
Once you get past 1000 or so games, you start to really realize how much physical space they take up.
2) There is no rush, these games arent going anywhere.
3) make sure you put aside time and money for other things. If you obsess over this hobby you will end up miserable.
Stay fit, and have fun!
I wonder if any non-Canadians will recognize the Body Break reference lol

Also, eat your vegetables.

And actually play the stuff you collect, and sell the stuff you'll never play.
