  • I love Battletoads but have never made it past the snow level.

I'm a big Ninja Gaiden fan as well and only ever finished the first one.
  • NES Mega Man games. Love em, play em all the time, wanna be good at em, just not.

Heh, the snow level is a breeze compared to the later levels. You should see how much trial and error is involved in the snake level and the terra tubes.

  • I don't have the kind of time to make that list haha. With the exeption of a select few games, I'm pretty terrible at video games in general.

Don't feel bad, me too. People assume that just because I've been playing games for 30 years that I'm good at them. Definitely not the case! If I needed to be good at something to enjoy, I wouldn't enjoy much!
  • For me I love playing blaster master and bionic commando for the nes but I cant beat them. I usually get far and then I get mad and have to shut it of before I want to throw the controller
  • SHMUPS. I think the reason is because I enjoy playing them as reflex based games, but to do well, you need to play them as pattern memorization games. That's not something I enjoy.
  • Manic shooters like Dodonpachi, Ibara, and Mushi Mushi Pork.

Yep, I really suck at them too, particularly 2 and 3.

Megaman 2 is the worst. Metalman is nigh invincible.

I have been playing it for decades and I still lose to him almost all the time. I suck at videogames.

Use the buster on him.  Just remember to stay on your side of the screen.  He always shoots 1, 2, or 3 blades.  1 and 2 you can easily jump over.  When he does 3, jump between the second and third blades. (as in the highest and next highest blade, I realized I wasn't clear about that)  I'm very offensive with him, but I believe he doesn't attack until you do.  He's actually the first stage I always go to.

And when you get to the end of the game and do the boss gauntlet, his weakness is Metal Blade.

I have died to him while using the Metal Blade. I had died to him while using Quickman's weapon. I have died to him with the buster. Metalman is my nemesis. My nightmare made robot.

  • Quickman is the one most likely to kick my ass.
  • Action/Platformers which are some of the harder games on the NES I am pretty good at all around and can beat any one I set my mind to for the most part.

I think my focus needs to shift to shooters and puzzle games as far as practice goes, I am "okay" and can compete but I cannot master them.....then again I don't play shooters that much.

Battlemaniacs looks intimidating. I'm pretty good at NES Battletoads but the turbo tunnel and snake levels from Battlemaniacs look a dozen times worse from the Youtube playthroughs I've seen.

I'm pretty sure that the turbo tunnel is actually a bit easier than the NES game, as for the snake levels I don,t remember. I think this game is definitely a challenge you would overcome nicely.

I'd say they're both harder.  Turbo Tunnel subverts your NES expectations, and the snake level is too zoomed in so you're constantly bumping into spikes

  • For me it was honestly every single platformer which was about every single game I owned until I discovered JRPGs.

My brother and I had a classic two-sibling problem. I was the gamer. I loved games. Couldn't stop playing them. He, however, was barely interested. I'd play SMB3 and get it to level 8 (always had to use whistles) and every single time I'd have to pass the control off to him with one life and 3 stages left. He'd beat it for me almost every time.

He was just so dammed good and he didn't care. It made me so mad but at least he didn't gloat about it.
  • Easily contra for me. Love the game and have played it a ton. Still can only get to level 5ish without uzing the konami cheat.

I tried beating Mega Man 2 today without using any of the boss-weapons, just the normal P gun, and no Energy boxes, and the hardest of the bosses by far is Crash Man. I mean christ. You need almost a hundred tries to have a chance.
  • Shooters and "falling block"-type puzzle games (as opposed to Lolo or something).

I avoided those genres as a kid, so I never built up any skills for those types of games.

I am slowing getting into 8/16-bit shooters, but they take me exponentially more time to learn compared to contemporaneous high difficulty platform / action games. I think it's a combination of the auto-scrolling (I can't control the pace of what appears next) and the lack of "level design" (same-y backgrounds and repetitive enemies / patterns make it hard to remember what's coming... this is more of a problem in vertical scrolling games).

Tetris-alikes kind of fall into the same category as other single-screen arcade / score-based games for me. They are games with little vareity but an extremely high skill ceiling. I can't work up the motivation to devote that much time to "get good" at a single game when there are so many other things I'd like to play.

I'll keep plugging away at the STGs, though.
  • The best I can come up with is any of the Super Smash Bros games. When playing with friends I used to be the best, and then they all got better and my skills never increased to match. I don't even bother playing online but I'm sure I would get destroyed if I did.

Oh, but I think the hardest game for me as a kid that I wouldn't stop playing because I felt I HAD to master it was Cybernoid.  Not exactly an exciting game but to me it was by far the hardest game in my library.
  • I love Mike Tyson's Punchout but rarely make it past Sandman. I have only legit made it to Mike one time and failed miserably.

Speaking of puzzle games, I'm content with the fact that I will always be terrible at Tetris. I recently played it quite a bit and I couldn't even crack 100k.

I'm decent at Tetris, but nowhere near a top player. I love puzzle games but they typically become too difficult around the 3/4 mark.

I've been playing the Incident on and off for the past year and I'm finally going to finish it today. Thank KHAN, that he included the ability to purchase level solutions. There were definitely a handful of levels that were way too complicated for me to wrap my head around.

I honestly would say the The Incident is one of the best puzzle games on the NES.......I need to go back and try to get further.

I was doing pretty good but then just came to a barrier.

Crash Man actually is the easiest boss with the normal weapon. He reacts to what you do, so he's easy to manipulate.

I always found Quick Man to be the most difficult to beat without any boss weapons......Sometimes I do really well and sometimes he just whoops me ass I don't feel like I have found a good pattern yet, maybe keep tight and just keep letting him do little jumps over you?
