According to currency converter, $550 NZD = $390 USD. That's a 30% upcarge on taxes and imports...
Yeah, NZ's dollar is crap.
Handheld games are literally more than double the price than they are in America. E.g. new release 3DS games are $75. I guess that's a good enough explanation as to why I have only bought two games brand new in the past two years.
Let's see the Wii U is disc-based, has a garbage controller w/ analog sticks in the wrong place, a painfully mediocre touch screen, has no first party mario or zelda, isn't portable, has the controls permanently attached to the screen, has a bad name with bad marketing (although I personally believe this didn't really matter much), doesn't encourage multiplayer use, the list goes on and on. If you don't see why this ISN'T the Wii U, I think you're blind or just a troll/redditor/hater.
I'm personally buying this for Zelda, Mario, Mario Kart 8 (new to me!), and possibly Splatoon. Hell thats plenty of potential fun for plane flights alone to justify the price.
I 100% am buying the switch just for mario and zelda (and other exclusives) and I am willing to bet a significant amount of other gamers that mainly play on ps4/xb1 are the same.
Or the people like me who skipped the XB1 and PS4 altogether!
Maybe that guy had a point about diehards. I'm one of them!

Glad I'm holding off on pre-ordering then...at least console wise...hm...hope Gamestop doesn't plan on cancelling any of the Master editions but I got one pretty early on so I should be ok lol.

I was totally bummed when I found out Gamestop was not accepting Master Edition preorders in store. My local Gamestop had 26 Switch consoles and six Limited Edition Zeldas, and I was number 2 in line so I took the Limited version.
I'm still bummed I didn't get the epic Master Sword statue though, but I think my preorder is safe. Gamestop seemed to know exactly how many each store had allocated on day one. Online pre-sales have always been a bit sketchy.

LOL! The statue may or may not be worth $30 but I haven't seen it in person and I suspect most people haven't. There's also the chance any prototypes on display may be of higher quality than the production units. Like certain e3 Amiibos being higher quality than the final production run.
I prefer to have nice things when I can. Sometimes something catches your eye and you just gotta splurge once in a while...
It's not the price overall. It's what your getting for the $300 dollars. Nintendo spent a bunch of money on thinking people will care about these "joy con" controllers. Obviously it's expensive tech....see the prices.
The portable tablet is a great idea and I truly believe Nintendo wanted the Wii U to have more mobility away from the TV put couldn't make it work at the time.
I can appreciate that Nintendo is trying to be different and doesn't want to directly compete with Sony & Microsoft. There is a place where they can live in the console space and sell 30 million consoles; even more if this console replaces the 3DS.
Yet, Nintendo will not say this. They did not come and out and say here it is....a console that can play all the 1st party console blockbuster titles that we all know and love....and play those great portable DS games. This console if marketed that way could sell 50-60 million....maybe more.

All launch lineups are barren...we all admit that. However, we were supposed to be blown away because Nintendo abandoned the Wii U for at least a year...in some cases longer. When is fact Splatoon 2 is hardly a squeal, Mario Kart is a few added features, and no mention of Smash Bros on the Switch.
With the Wii U selling so little, they could have had each of the games mentioned above ready at launch for millions of gamers who didn't bother purchasing a Wii U.
I bet my house Mario leaks into 2018. Nintendo's develop teams are notoriously slow and behind schedule.
This console didn't show one game or one new thing that would make a non-Nintendo fan want to purchase this console. The Switch will once again be a Nintendo fan-boy console and as someone mentioned; that group..which I include myself in are dying.
Sure, I'm getting it for Mario and Zelda alone. But I can't recommend it to other non Nintendo diehards, and the same could be said for the Wii U.
Nintendo doubled down on motion controls; when anyone with a brain could have told Nintendo motion controls are dead.
Once again, big 3rd party titles will not be able to run on the Switch. Oh but what about an 6 year old game called Skyrim????? I guarantee you Fallout 4 cannot run on this console.
Another wasted opportunity by Nintendo to make a more powerful console that would have excited 3rd party developers. I will gladly eat crow if this console sales more than 25 million. Look at the data....this failure won't kill Nintendo because they have billions of dollars. But how can you honestly say they have a chance for this console to be a success; unless Nintendo openly admits to killing off the DS and making the Switch their only console.
Wii Sales- 13 million
Wii Sales- 101 million
Gamecube sales- 21 million
Nintendo 64 sales- 32 million
Super NES- 49 million
NES- 61 million
That's called a trend folks....the Wii was a fluke and no one bought any games for it. 80% played Wii Sports for a year and stopped.
Interesting perspective. I actually enjoy the Nintendo brands / games a lot, but similarly realized that the systems aren't worth buying. This makes me think that the lack of 3rd party support is an issue. By the way, that doesn't mean QBERT ports of Just Dance and Madden. Think to the NES and SNES where Nintendo was the go-to system and had tons of people making great games for it. I wish we could have that healthy ecosystem again. Otherwise Nintendo keeps innovating in interesting ways with the hardware, but squandering that effort with a poor library to accompany it. I can only play Mario Kart, Party, and SMB so many times (not to mention I still have the better originals on hand).

I would place a large bet the switch reverses that trend. I bet they sell more than 13 milion units by christmas 2018
IMO nintendo was obviously most popular when it first came out and those who were 5-15 years old in the 80s. as we all grew up a new generation of gamers who didnt live and die by the nes played the new brands evenly with nintendo i.e. sony, xbox.
when the wii came out so many people thought/still think it was a silly kids system that only had wii sports. That plus the worst launch marketing in the history of video games and nobody bought the wii u except hard core fans.
Today nintendo has been marketing gold releasing blue balls teasers to get casual gamers excited about nintendo all over again. Pokemon go, mario run, classic nes.......wait for it boom! now our generation has kids and nintendo has our full attention. My friends that dont play any video games anymore want a switch for themselves and their kids. They want to relive their youth with their youth and have a great time. I think the marketing has been golden, and i think people are super excited to buy a nintendo again for the first time ina long time. Doesnt hurt the people who love the nes the most are now 30-40 years old with real jobs now and income to support a new awesome console
I think this will sell close to 50 million consoles if not more.

They're not ready to knock out the handheld bc it sold 80 MILLION units and that number doesn't include this past holidays sales. For perspective, PS3 sold 86M and XB360 sold 85M. So the 3ds alone sold more than every home console except the Wii. I get it, there are a lot of ppl out of touch with what Nintendo is doing bc all they did was watch the Wii u and think that that was Nintendo. But it wasnt. They made up for it in every way with what they were doing with the 3ds and for those who missed that, I feel sorry for.
I think 3ds has only sold a little over 60 million units but i agree with your point. I think the switch has the potential to gain a following where it normally wouldnt with its regular home consoles which may tap into the 3ds fan base. I think once kids get ahold of it and start playing with friends at school or whatever it could take off. I wish i was in school again just so i could bring a switch and make friends! theres alot of potential here so lets not start selling it short before its even out. Sure they probably could of pushed out Mario kart and Smash at launch or whatever but Mario Kart is only a month after launch. I doubt they will push back Mario till 2018 since its so far along in development and they know they need a big hit for holidays. If anything i could see them pushin back Xenoblade 2 till next year since they are sayin now a 2017 release.
I think the big mystery is if they are merge their console and handheld divisions. If they announce a 4ds or other dedicated handheld next year that is going to only cannibalize Switch sales and lose customer confidence like when Sega was pumping out tons of hardware platforms rapid fire in the 90s.
If they can focus all software development for one platform that is huge. Everyone keeps saying Mario and Zelda but forget that Pokémon is their biggest brand. A console mainline Pokémon has been a dream for years, and that will be a monster title if it happens on the switch.
Everyone talks about how excited casual gamers are for this thing. I would classify myself right in the middle of casual gamer and gamer and I couldnt be less excited. In fact, I have a lot of friends who are "casual" gamers and they still dont know what the Switch is, and the ones that do know what it is have zero interest. And why? They say its the price. Why get a switch, when they can get a PS4 or Xbone for $250 which plays dvds/blurays, streams multiple video services, has web surfing, 1tb of storage, 4k support, etc. One guy said that he paid less for his new iPhone, and that thing will do more with a longer battery life. Hell, most casuals are still trying to find a mini NES so they can play punchout and SMB.
Its silly to expect casuals to be the market for this, when it would take about $500 just to set them up. When the Wii came out, every yuppy didnt have a smart phone and/or tablet glued to their face, it was half the price of the PS3, and offered something new to the table. It was a true party system, and I still have friends that play Wii sports at gatherings. What does the Switch really offer a casual gamer that they cant get from their smart phone, tablet, or the $10 Wii you can find at most used game stores?
Like others have said, this is a fan-boy system. I do believe it will outsell the WiiU, especially if it replaces the DS line, but even then I dont see it breaking the 25 million in sales (give or take).

If I bought my son a $300 system with a $60 game and a controller that costs $80 to replace, he wouldnt be leaving the house with it.

This is my point. No one will discount the success of Nintendo's hanheld business. But think about the possibilities of pouring all the development teams and resources into one console.
The arguement could be made that the console would have a constant stream of games. Some smaller hanheld experiences and of course the more sparse larger 1st party Nintendo console games.
To me that's how this console succeeds. Right now it seems to be a Wii U 2.0.
I didn't see one game that couldn't have ran on the Wii U. I mean cmon...the best game is coming on on the Wii U. Joy Con controllers, Splatoon 2, 2 n 1 Switch, and Arms are not making anyone say....dang those games are only possible on the Switch.
I forsee a Pokemon MMO announced next year released in 2019.
Think about it.
They already dipped their toes in the water with Pokemon Go.
The controller allows you to simulate feelings so it can feel like throwing a real pokeball.
The portability makes it a breeze for the Pokemon company to do their trade locally thing.
Paid service means Nintendo has to give what people want, and a Pokemon MMO has been at the top of the list for a while now.
The Pokemon company only releases main series titles in mobile devices.
You mean it has rumble, right? lol. I don't think that's a reason why we should expect a pokemon mmo. I mean yeah the rumble would be cool, but every nintendo home console since the n64 has had that.
They don't "have" to do anything.
I think the switch has a high probability to get a main series pokemon game, besides pokemon stars, solely due to the portability of the console.
Was Pokemon Go even created by the same team that makes the main series pokemon games?
They need Kim Kadashian on the Today show playing that milk the udders game
Then it might be a hit with casuals and 1,2, Switch might be the next big party game. Otherwise it is going to be like the Wii U and asynchronous multiplayer, cool concept but other than Nintendo land how many other games even bother with the consoles big gimmick?

What about this thing appeals to casuals? It would cost about $500 to get this thing party ready. Why even bother when a casual probably still has a dusty Wii hanging around, an Iphone and an Ipad. What would even be the selling point to them?

You sir are a genius. This is the kind of marketing ideas Nintendo needs. Nothing like a untalented big booby whore to promote milking anything.
I can't stand her but would watch the commerical at least 20 times on You Tube if she is bending over.

Im hearing people are having their best buy pre-orders cancelled, hope you guys have a back up!
Wuuutt[!]
That makes me all the more glad I showed up at Gamestop early in the morning instead of trying to do the online thing.

You get the feeling Nintendo isn't ready to eliminate the hand held yet.
All launch lineups are barren...we all admit that. However, we were supposed to be blown away because Nintendo abandoned the Wii U for at least a year...in some cases longer. That time and the "March" release date was supposed to set everything up for an amazing launch and an amazing first year of games.

I wish i was in school again just so i could bring a switch and make friends!. . .
If I bought my son a $300 system with a $60 game and a controller that costs $80 to replace, he wouldnt be leaving the house with it.

*3ds sold about 60+ mil

I forsee a Pokemon MMO announced next year released in 2019.

2+ years is a long time to keep people waiting.

Then it might be a hit with casuals and 1,2, Switch might be the next big party game. Otherwise it is going to be like the Wii U and asynchronous multiplayer, cool concept but other than Nintendo land how many other games even bother with the consoles big gimmick?
They need Kim Kadashian on the Today show playing that milk the udders game

What about this thing appeals to casuals? It would cost about $500 to get this thing party ready. Why even bother when a casual probably still has a dusty Wii hanging around, an Iphone and an Ipad. What would even be the selling point to them?

Nope, Game Freak (and Creatures Inc.) had nothing to do with it. Pokemon Go was developed under contract for Nintendo/The Pokemon Company by Niantic.

You sir are a genius. This is the kind of marketing ideas Nintendo needs. Nothing like a untalented big booby whore to promote milking anything.
I can't stand her but would watch the commerical at least 20 times on You Tube if she is bending over.

Come on Kim! Contribute somethin to society for once and make the switch a success!
