NES Monopoly and its difficulty...

  • I've played Monopoly on multiple systems and the NES version is actually my go too. Its fast paced and you don't have to go through alot of menus or bs between rolls. That said the computer is very difficult but I still play it with the family. Try the Snes version maybe, its just as good as the NES version though with better graphics. I am not sure what the computer difficulty for it is though.
  • The SNES version is miserably slow and the menus are broken and it's just a huge pile of shit overall. The NES version is surprisingly fast paced.
  • Yeah I guess I overlooked that after getting my ass handed to me by this game so many times.

Aside from the computer players, NES Monopoly is a well designed game. It's very fast paced and doesn't waste time on pointless things. It's one big reason to pick the NES version over the physical board game version. Just never play with more than one computer player. The graphics and sound are all very good too, it's a great little MMC1 game.
  • I love NES Monopoly, it's one of my favorite games. It's very beatable just did it first try.

  • I beat this dumb game when I was around 7. Maybe easy video games aren't for you. No disrespect, but perhaps try legos or hotwheels instead?
  • I've beaten Earth Bound (NES proto) twice now and a lot of people think that game really hard. Difficulty is a relative thing.
  • So I'm 3/4 since I read this thread. I probably should have won the 4th but I made a mistake burning off all my cash in a trade to complete a monopoly. Takes quite a bit of trading and the computer will totally ream you on value but getting a monopoly ahead of everyone else is important. I've held the orange monopoly all 4 games. Controlling the house supply is important too- I'll sit on a bunch of houses and not build hotels to keep everyone else from building up.
  • Well, I give up. I can't beat this game no matter how hard I try or how many times I play it. This is probably the 30th game by now, I've lost every time. No matter what, the computers will all own at least one property in every color, making it really difficult to get a monopoly going. The best I've managed was hotels on the light blue properties near the jail, but I still lost that game too.

Every game it's 4 players, me and 3 computers. Just out of curiosity I tried with 7 computers... Still lost.
  • I can't believe you have the patience to play this game, PERIOD.
  • I decided to give NES Monopoly one more try. I finally did it, I beat this game.

This time I went 5 player (me + 4 computers). At first it seemed like the usual BS, all the good stuff getting snapped up. I tried trading into the orange property which had 1/3 still owned by the bank, but that went bust after someone landed on that last property. I then went with the other good alternative, the red properties (near free parking). By pure luck, a computer with no money landed on the property I needed, so I got the red monopoly through auction. Eventually as more computers landed on my monopoly, I gained more of the board and I actually won this time. My only competition was boardwalk/park place, which thankfully didn't destroy me. Technically there was a third monopoly on the board, but I sucked the owner dry while making my initial monopoly, so he never got to place any houses there.

  • All about that orange and red
  • fun fact: computer is dumb as shit. you can literally trade them into bankrupting themselves. if all their properties are mortgaged and they are low on cash, you can offer them a mortgaged property for whatever cash they have left and they will accept. then they have to pay the 10% fee on the transfer (or unmortgage+10% which they seem to prefer) and have zero assets or cash to cover it. they go bankrupt to the bank. i just did this to 6 out of 7 computer players.

I had one do a similar thing when I played. I traded them a property that I didn't need for all of their cash and they landed on one of my red properties with two houses and went bankrupt because they had already mortgaged all of their properties. I still don't get how this game is hard. I played five 4 player games over the weekend and won four of them. The only time I lost was when two of the computer player pulled off a trade that gave them both a monopoly and they both had enough cash to load up on houses as soon as they made the deal.
  • i didn't realize the NES Monopoly meta-game was so well documented. O_O
  • Monopoly is once again proven to have soul-crushing powers.
  • I've beaten this game a few times against the best computer players. The Genesis version too. Fun game.
  • I just finally managed to beat it. The key for me was to avoid giving the AI a monopoly at all costs.
  • I totally forgot about this thread...and how valid it is.

Popped this in the other day as a joke and was marveled at how difficult it was.
  • I made a thread earlier this year about strategies to beat this game. Sure, sometimes an opp will get a freak natural monopoly early on or just terrible rolls or one opp goes bankrupt to another player and you're screwed, but if you're consistently losing, then you're not taking full advantage of the flaws in the AI.

Ultracastle - Even giving the computer a high value (red/yellow/green/blue) monopoly in exchange for one of your own isn't the end of the world if it also has no cash to add houses, since the AI will never leverage by mortgaging its other properties to build up 3+ houses quickly. Just don't try that stunt with the light blues, magenta or orange properties or it will frequently end poorly. You can also make an opponent waste a lot of time by trading them the purples and grabbing all their cash since they'll focus on building that instead of any other monopoly they have.
  • I played the Genesis version a lot a couple of years ago and was able to win 75% of the time by trading the last piece a computer opponent need for their monopoly, in exchange for everything or nearly everything else they had in return. If you can get multiple opponents to do this they'll spend themselves into a hole trying to build up their monoplies and won't be able to pay you when they land on your spaces, which will be often.

I remember renting the shit out of the Genesis version in the early 90's; much better game than the NES version!
  • Pretty sure Monopoly has ruined real life friendships somewhere in the world.

If you are missing one property in a monopoly, the computer players are greedy and will NEVER cough up a property you need, no matter what you offer. If the computers are dealing with eachother, they're more than willing to lend a hand in getting monopolies.

If you have a monopoly in progress, the game will ensure you get drained of money at every turn. In fact, everything random in this game is clearly rigged. How can 10+ games go by without a single win? I am trying my absolute hardest and it's unbeatable. No matter how much of a monopoly I build, I will always land on another one and lose everything LONG before anyone lands on mine.

    Fuck this game...

I've been singing that tune for years. Monopoly was one of the titles that somehow ended up in my collection the early 90's and it always felt cheaty.

So...I would always just cheat right back and modify the game set up so that I owned several monopolies at the outset of the game and watched all those bastard AI limp to the poor house. Mwah ha ha ha haaaaa!!!

    Sweet, sweet revenge!

It's a friends and family "table flipper" for sure!
  • This is so odd, I dont think i've played a game of monopoly on the NES and lost. I usually play against to top 7 computer players. I usually start by letting them buy everything at first so they have no money left and then I scoop up everything on auctions cuz they cant afford it.
  • This thread inspired me to play the game and I'm having a lot of fun with it. I'd been wondering if I had been getting bored with my NES but it turns out I'm just in need of something slightly more strategic right now.

When selecting your computer opponent, do the various selectable characters have any difference in AI? I always pick Ollie and I only ever play 1 on 1. He tends to make some questionable choices regarding mortgages and builds houses to the point where he doesn't have enough money to realistically get around the board and reach GO without going into more debt. It gets to a point where every single property is morgaged except whatever monopoly he has,
  • I feel better about this game these days.

    Sort of.

That score was from sinking 3 computer players single-handedly. It was a 4 player match including myself.
  • Well, I got a copy a little while ago, I guess I have to try to beat it for this thread now.
  • Hmm...I snagged the Game Boy monopoly for $1.50. Want to see if the difficulty is the same! I love Monopoly, play the Nintendo CE version with the fam often  .
