Can The Nintendo Switch Be Most Innovative Gaming Console Ever Made? Or is it just heading in the wr

  • I agree with Toxie and drag00n. Nintendo would do better to make an awesome lineup of a whole bunch of awesome games than trying to push the wacky envelope. Both were done in NES days. Now? They are picking just one and hoping other devs will see the genius uniquity and get on board. I think they need to go with the other one, or both at the same time again.
Wii was an exception but otherwise we have seen this not working and sales declining for all other generations.

Maybe I don't understand this point. It would seem counter to the Wii U design. Or maybe I do understand, and it explains why the U was not very successful.

I just wish nintendo would make a nice powerful console with a regular controller.
  • I'll go out on a limb and say I will never see anyone where I live using one of these in public, just my prediction. I am also in the same boat, have NEVER seen anyone actually playing a 3DS or Vita in public. It blows my mind that the 3DS has the sales numbers it does, I've NEVER seen a person using one! I live in a college town too.
  • I've seen kids (under 10) playing the 3DS out in public multiple times. At restaurants, dentist waiting room, etc. Those handhelds are a hit with kids.

I see this brought up a lot and it never seems to be clarified. Are we talking about 3rd party exclusive titles? Then absolutely, that is a huge issue for Nintendo. If we are talking about getting 3rd party multi-plat releases, I don't think that would make a lick of difference. No one cares about Madden, COD or Assassin's Creed on Switch.

Games like Rockband, GTA, etc. Has there been a main series final fantasy on a Nintendo console since the snes? Nope. Lots of RPG's are put out on the PlayStation and Xbox, yet next to nothing on Nintendo home consoles. Nintendos home consoles have become a Mario and Zelda machine.

Does Atlus release console/handheld games for anybody other than Nintendo?

Granted, their RPGs are too hardcore for most of the Final Fantasy press-A-to-play-the-next-movie crowd.

Altus released Catherine on the 360 and PS3, so yep!!

Any of their other stuff?  (i.e. their fairly extensive collection of dungeon crawlers)

That I'm not entirely sure about. I think there's a handful of Atlus games on the PS2, but not sure what games or genre. I may have some, but I won't be home until next week to check.

Same here, but those batteries last a lot longer than the Switch will, so I can't see that replacing the 3DS

The switch is basically a successor to the NVidia Shield Tablet.

I have remarkably good up-time on that device, and they are able to strip out some of the tablet features (like GPS and 4G support -- both saving power AND adding more space for additional battery capacity).

And didn't we read that the tablet itself is only going to be 720p?  (versus the 1920x1200 that my Shield Tablet is supporting)

That is a lot of graphic processing power consumption they'll be able to throttle back on.

I'm willing to bet the battery life will be totally sufficient.

I thought they said 3 hours for battery life, but I could be wrong.

I live in a college town and see 3ds playing on campus pretty often.

I haven't kept up, but it sounds like their primary claim is "over six hours" and that a game like Breath of Wild was closer to the 3 hour range (which I agree sounds pretty short).

I'm kind of amazed they would make the device a couple mm thicker and get a bigger battery crammed in there.

Is it innovative? Sure. Is it going to be a success? I doubt it. How many people do you see in the bus or train playing on their 3DS or Vita? I have literally NEVER seen either in public and I commute 4-5 hours a day 4 days a week on average the past 7-8 years...

I don't see the Switch changing this trend at all. Sure a lot of people will probably bring their Switch with them on holiday but how many times a year do people go on holiday? On average maybe once per year? At the most 2? I doubt a majority of people have flexible jobs that allows them for more than 1-2 holidays per year. So would people really be enticed to buy a new console just for that 1-2 holiday per year? I doubt it. And how many people frequently travel on business trips like they showed in their original trailer? Again not many people.

It's a nice idea, I'll give them that. But just because it looks awesome on paper doesn't make it a success in the real world. Seeing how few people actually bother taking their handhelds out in public should've been an indication to Nintendo whether there ever was a demand for a portable console in the gaming market.

I live in NYC and I constantly see people playing handhelds on the subway.  I am one of them.  I love bustin out my TurboExpress.  I actually played it this morning on the subway.

  • Whether or not you are seeing them doesn't change the fact that there are almost 60 million of them out there.
  • To answer the thread title, I feel strongly that neither case is true.

To offer a contrasting perspective, I'm from Vancouver BC and used to take the Skytrain system often, and I'd always, always see other people playing 3DS waiting for the train. Even asked what they were playing and got in on some multiplayer a few times, but you'd definitely see it every day.

QFT there guy. Thats what we all wish... and maybe a controller that can actually fit into my kids friggin hands. They should make a simplified mini pro controller for kids. Maybe in different cool colors. How neat would it be to be playing a 2 player game with your kid and you have an adult size controller and they have a mini one that actually fits in their hands comfortably? My kids love the original nes controllers because of the size.

So you haven't seen the joycons at all, I'm guessing?

Yeah, I did. My idea was more along the design of an actual replica shape of a pro controller, just in a smaller size.

  • ^The joycons are a neat idea for a portable console. My thinking was more along the lines for dedicated home console controllers that are a little more substantial and not as compact.
  • I think its a great idea just very late. Since I started out in the 80's with my NES I wanted to take it in the car on family trips but couldn't. The GameBoy was a decent alternative but never appealed to me because they weren't my NES games and not in colour. Some companies stepped in with portable Famicoms but they were rarely seen in North America, this is when Nintendo should have payed attention. We got a Gamecube addon so portable games could be played on the TV, but still no TV games on a portable. Emulators were created for things like the GBA, but still Nintendo didn't pay attention. 3rd parties created an addon for the GBA to be played on TV but when the DS came out Nintendo still wasn't paying attention and never implemented TV out, and they still haven't with all the revisions of the DS.

So to me this new Switch is bittersweet, it's what I have wanted since I was a child, unfortunately modern gaming doesn't appeal to me much and the 3rd party portable NES and SNES consoles lack quality and compatibility.

I want real hardware portable NES and SNES consoles with TV out, approx the same size as the switch.
